The Seduction’ and ‘Cousin Kate’

‘The Seduction’ and ‘Cousin Kate’ are both narrative poems, telling the story of a teenager/young woman respectivley, who get seduced, taken advantage of, then cast aside by an older and more experienced man. Both poems are told from the girls point of view, and tell the reader of the consequences of their actions.

‘The Seduction’ is about a teenage girl who gets pregnant after a one night stand.

In the first verse, straight away we are given the temporal and geographical setting

‘…early Sunday morning…Birkenhead docks…’

The fact that it is a Sunday seems unethical, as Sunday is seen as a holy day, and this forms antithetical ideas with the events about to occur. We are also told that

‘He led her…’

This shows the male dominance, a theme which is continued throughout the poem. In the third line, the sibilance of ‘silver stream’ slows the rhythm of the poem, and the repetition of ‘far’ in the rd and 4th lines emphasise the distance between the docks and the busy city, full of traffic. In the last line of this verse, she is past the

‘…blind windows of the tower blocks.’

I think this means that the curtains are drawn, symbolising the ignorance of the public to this situation.

In the nd verse, we are introduced to the ‘Seducer’. The words ‘Darkness’ and ‘fumbled’ in the first and second lines imply the unknown, whilst his ‘leather jacket’ gives us an immediate rebel image. When he ‘spat’ into the river it shows us that he has no manners. The next line, I believe, is particularly important.

‘He handed the vodka, and she knocked it back like water.’

This shows that

1. He is in control of the situation.

. She is an inexperienced drinker, as people who were used to drinking wouldn’t knock back vodka.

Also, water is supposed to symbolise life, so it seems ironic that vodka is being compared to it. In the next line, she giggles, showing that she is childish. He ‘muttered ‘little slag’’. This shows that he has no respect for her, and by muttering, he knows that he shouldn’t have said it.

In the rd verse, we are just told how they met, and that he is a typical boy, talking about boxing and football.

In the 4th verse, we are shown how he got her drunk, and the actual sordidness of the situation

‘…stroked her neck and thighs…kisses that tasted nicotine…’

In the 5th verse, we are told he is a truant

‘I’ll take you to the river where I spent me afternoons, when I should be at school’

He also says that he reads ‘me dads magazines’ in plain simple terms, pornography.
