I am writing you on behalf of my recent speech that was given on April , 00.

I was explained to why that my speech was 'inappropriate for class, yet after reviewing my green guidelines sheet, I still do not understand why I should be expected to write another plan for the future, if I would like 'a fair grade, as you had put it. After reviewing the green guidelines sheet, this is what I have found

PLAN FOR THE FUTURE (goals for the upcoming year) PERSUASIVE

The most emphasis should be placed on the PLAN FOR THE FUTURE component (- minutes). As Chief Executive, you should have well defined goals and proposals for carrying them out. Keep in mind your audience and 'sell your plan!

Order custom research paper on Bullshit

Expectations Dress as if you are the Chief Executive (or as attire as if you were going to a job interview).

You may use ONE notecard to aid you in your speech (4x6, 1 side only)

An outline of your complete speech is due on Monday, April 8 (this should be a COMPLETE outline of all the information you plan to include in your speech).

A bibliography of your sources for your speech is also due on Monday, April 8.

Nowhere did it mention that my ideas as the Chief Executive has to be the same or similar to that of George W. Bush, EVHS teachers, or anyone else for that matter. Were my ideas different from what you had expected? Apparently. Should I be penalized, or graded unfairly because of it? In my opinion, as well as others that I have spoken with, no.

I will review my plans for the future now.

Proposal #1 50 billion dollars for military use

Personal Response Nothing out of the ordinary or irrational.

Proposal # Give Iraq a democracy, and with that, give them the United States democracy, and make Iraq, the 51st state of America.

Personal Response We have already invaded Iraq, and removed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. My thoughts are since we went to the trouble of invading Iraq, and removing their leader, why not make them part of the US, since we went to all the trouble of invading them. Iraq has one of the largest populations of terrorist cells, and organizations. If Iraq was to be part of the United States, I would be willing to assume that those terrorist cells and organizations would either flea, or pursuit a life style free of terrorism.

Proposal # Turn Afghanistan into the 5nd state of America.

Personal Response We have invaded Afghanistan, and removed the Taliban from rule. I do not see why we do not make them a state, or at the least, part of the United States. We went to the trouble of invading their country, so I feel it is out duty to continue to make sure that Afghanistan is a safe place, with funding. I do not see anyway of doing this without making them part of our country. Afghanistan is home to the Taliban and other terrorist groups. It is a similar situation to that of Iraq's, I believe terrorists will flea or disarm if they are living in a US colony.

Proposal #4 Turn Iran into the 5rd state of America.

Personal Response This is a similar situation to that of Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran is harboring terrorists, and I believe President Bush will attack Iran after we are completed uniting Iraq. I don't ultimately see any change, unless the US is physically in Iran to end Terrorism, thus making Iran the 5rd state of America.

Proposal #5 Legalize all illegal drugs for recreational use.

Personal Response I want to legalize drugs for revenue for the government. By growing, and selling drugs, the government could benefit from the profit. The United States is in an enormous debt. By growing, and selling drugs, they could make a large profit that the government does not have now.

Proposal #6 Invade Canada, and turn Canada into the 54th state of America.

Personal Response Unlike Iraq, Iran, or Afghanistan; Canada is not harboring terrorists that are of threat to the United States. This is my most off proposal, yet I feel it could benefit the US, as well as Canada if we unite into one country. It is clear that America is having a gas crisis. Gas prices fluctuate daily, and there is a scare that there will be a shortage in years to come. Not only does Canada have mass amounts of natural gas, but it is for the most part, unused. We could really benefit from what they have to offer, as well as they could benefit from what the United States has to offer. Canada also gas coal, gold, and silver among many things.

My ideas are somewhat irrational to someone who does not understand the point that I am coming from. However I do have well defined goals, and proposals. The most peculiar of my proposals was to invade the country of Canada. Not only did I have reasons for invading Canada, but I also informed my mom that the United States should invade Canada over six months ago. She of coursed responded, 'that is one of the craziest things, it will never happen. I hope you reconsider, because this is how I feel, and no matter what; I will not change my mind on how I feel about this. I could change my speech, but what would it teach me? That does not change the fact, that this is what I believe and I do not feel I should be graded unfairly for my beliefs. I am certain however; I will not be the only one objecting to being penalized for beliefs in a public high school.

Protectionism

Protectionism is the process in which domestic markets are protected of overseas products flooding our markets, in other words protectionism is to discourage imports. Trade Protectionism is adopted by all countries of the world and in some way or another protectionism policies are exercised to some extent. There are a large number of ways in which a country may choose to erect trade barriers for example, tariffs and quotas.

By definition a tariff is said to be a tax on imports and can be used by governments as revenue and it as financial spending. A tariff is setup in order to encourage domestic producers. When an imported product is taxed the price of the product is increased, for example Japan may sell a car for $0 000 and with an introduction of a tariff this car could be now worth $5 000. The new price now sets up a demand for a different car in being a domestic car. Therefore domestic producers are protected from the inflow of cheaper products.

Another technique used too exercise trade protection is a quota. A quota is a physical limit on imports. For example Australia might put a quota on international bananas to encourage the sale of domestic bananas produced in Australia. Additionally quotas are setup in order to prevent dumping; dumping is the sale of goods at less than the cost of production by foreign producers in a domestic market. Products can only be ¡§dumped¡¨ if is no demand for bikes for example and the foreign producer has produced several bikes and in order to get rid of the stock they ¡§dump¡¨ them into other economies and create competition with domestic producers.

Buy custom Protectism term paper

Other methods of protectionism include inspection of imported products. A few years back Australia exported oranges and other varieties of fruit to Japan and the Japanese government in order to protect domestic producers sent inspectors one month after the products where exported to Japan obviously the fruit had rotted and was sent back. Recently, Australia sent a whole lot of wheat over the Iraq and again to protect domestic producers the Iraqi inspector¡¦s venomated the wheat sent them back too.

Furthermore safety standards are another method of trade protection, going back to the car example, if Australia¡¦s car standards are much higher than Japanese car standards then the Japanese cars would need to be moderated to be adequate to meet the Australian obligations and eventually increase the price of the imported car.

Arguments used to justify protection are the infant industry argument and is made to protect and keep newly established firms so they can survive in the highly competitive market. If firms are closing down because of cheaper imported products then alternatively unemployment will increase and government will need to work harder to achieve domestic stability. To achieve domestic stability, gross domestic product (output) must increase - 4% from the last period, the economy must have full employment (5% unemployment) and inflation should be controlled to ¡V % per annum. If unemployment increases then it would be difficult to achieve stability. This continues onto another argument to justify trade protection in being job protection. Australian jobs must be secure and well protected. Additionally safety hazards are another reason to justify trade protection especially in today¡¦s environments many diseases are occurring such as Maninga Cockle and SARS.

Preventing dumping from cheap labour Asian countries such as China is another argument to justify protectionism. Dumping occurs for three reasons surplus stock, to drive out domestic competitors and because they are unable to find a market for a particular product. It is said to be unfair to other economies such as the U.K, Australia and others whom, pay high wages in order to keep the standards of living on the increase that countries like China, have a large population that is unable to find jobs (scarcity), pay low wages knowing if the worker does not like it they can easily get replaced and as a result cost of production is low hence the products can be sold cheaply.

Besides economies must meet the terms of trade which is a ratio comparing exports to imports (tariff „³ imports decrease „³ terms of trade improve) and decrease the current account deficit. This is setup in order to meet external stability which is to have a relatively strong exchange rate and a minimal amount of foreign debts. Also to prevent heavy reliance on other economies to supply goods and services.

In the Lorenz Graph above the line though the center (450 line) is the line of perfect income equity and the blue curve (Lorenz Curve) the real equity of income in Australia. The gap between the two is called the gini co-efficient and as the gap widens the gap between the rich and the poor will be greater. To prevent the gap from widening trade protection is applied and keeps all income inside Australia and hence 100% of the income goes to 100% of the people and not to foreigners.

The only valid argument against trade protection is consumer sovereignty and that is if domestic producers can not meet the obligations of the consumer then the consumer has to go to somewhere else where it¡¦s provided. As a result the consumer has the pay the extra tax on the product in order to maximize satisfaction. For example Australia is a agricultural and producer of only raw materials such as metals, coal¡K however Australia can¡¦t produce technological products such as computers and hence consumers are forced to by foreign goods.

In conclusion I believe that trade protection is necessary however not to an extreme extent where imports are too costly. ANCIENT HISTORY

Giovanni Belzoni was born in Italy in 1778, he was the son of a barber who had thirteen siblings. When his native land was invaded he fled to England. He worked as a hydraulic engineer and as a merchant trader. He used his knowledge of hydraulics to create a machine that would make water more available. At the age of 4 he was a staggering 6'7" tall and traveled to London where he was employed as a circus strong man. After leaving the circus Belzoni, his wife and his Irish servant James Curtin moved to Malta. It was there that he met up with a British Consul General named Henry Salt who convinced Belzoni to gather treasures and artifacts to send back to the British museum. They then moved to Egypt.

The tomb of pharaoh Seti I was discovered in the Valley of the Kings in October 1817 by Giovanni Belzoni. The tomb of Seti I represents the new kingdoms royal tomb. It is the deepest and the longest at over 100m in length and was the most completely finished of all the tombs in the valley. It's covered with numerous decorations of great beauty. Seti's tomb was discovered only a few days after the tomb of his father, Ramesses I.

Custom Essays on giovanni belzoni+seti I

Seti I ruled in the XIX dynasty approximately 185BC, he was known for his high achievements and culture, and his tomb was one of the hallmarks of his building projects, with paintings of great beauty and skill. The paintings and decorations are more detailed then in earlier tombs, with figures having more realistic features. This tomb was the first to have all walls and passages covered with decorations. The structure of the tomb was very complex and would have taken great skill to create, as in many of the tombs of the Valley.

Giovanni Battiasta Belzoni mummified Seti I

Description of the tomb of Seti I in the Valley of the Kings

A. Entrance stairway and passage- corridor of the god

B. Corridor I or second corridor of the god (decorated with scenes from the Litany of Re and the king before Re-Horakhty

C. Second stairway -third corridor of the God (scenes from the Amduat and Litany of Re)

D. Corridor II, or passage of the God (scenes from the Amduat)

E. Ritual well, -a deep well shaft (scenes of the king praying to the sun god as well as various deities)

F. Four pillared hall (eight meters wide) (decorated Osiris shrine and scenes from the book of Gates)

G. Lower passage or corridor III (opening of the mouth' ceremony)

H. Two pillared side room, or hall of drawings (scenes from the Amduat; pillars decorated with the king before various deities)

I. Antechamber or hall of truth (decorated with scenes of the king before various deities)

J. Southern annex or chamber

K. Northern annex or chamber

L. Six pillared burial chamber or house of gold (book of gates, the Amduat and the book of the Divine cow; images of the kink before various deities)

M. Hall for canopic jars

N. Crypt.- (decorated with scenes from the Amduat; astronomical ceiling)

It was here that Belzoni found an elegant empty alabaster sarcophagus, three meters long and with walls only five centimeters thick, the mummified body of Seti I along with others including Ramesses II had been moved in ancient times to the cache at Deir el-Bahari

O. North-west side chamber or annex

P. Four pillared chamber

Belzoni seemed to have a naturally scientific mind, he could read all the signs of diggings in the discarded shale and dirt and in the way water ran in the valley to help him find tombs, and find tombs he did, Seti I, Ay, Mentuherkhepeshef and four others all within a short time.

On some occasions Belzoni was very destructive, while exploring Seti I's tomb Belzoni came across an ancient wall, and ordered his men to destroy it so they could proceed on, it's unknown what would have been learned from studying the wall. Even the government of the time did not care about storing or preserving the historical mummies and tombs and did not put any restrictions on pillaging and destruction of sites. But what has to be taken into consideration is the lack of tools, knowledge and technology of the time.

But Belzoni's methods were not all destructive, He recreated the burial chamber of Seti I by taking wax imprints, by doing this he did not destroy the walls but still got accurate records of the carvings and decorations. Others at this time were not so thoughtful, the French were planning to use dynamite on the statue of Ramesses II, luckily for it and the rest of the world, Belzoni claimed it and successfully moved it intact.

I feel that his diggings have helped us to understand our history with depth and to great precision. Although his techniques were sometimes considered destructive and quite unorthodox his discoveries could be said to have began the scientific study of Egyptology. Howard Carter, the famous archaeologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun, said that Belzoni was " one of the most remarkable men in the entire history of archaeology." I feel that without the works of Belzoni and fellow archaeologist we would not have such a great understanding of our history.

Important People in Greek History

Pericles was the leader of Athens during its Golden Age. He encouraged democratic

principles, such as citizen involvement. Under Pericles rule, Athens gained beautiful art and

architecture and threw marvelous festivals, banquets, and parades. These attracted merchants,

philosophers, and artisans from all over Greece. He had an imperialistic foreign policy; he wanted

the world to know the supremacy of Athens. Unfortunately, this policy led to the downfall of

Athens. When all the other city-states became angry enough, they revolted and conquered Athens.

Sophocles was one of the greatest playwrights in the history of Greece. He lived during

Athens Golden Age. He began his career as a playwright when he won the Dionysia, a prestigious

annual theater competition. From there, he wrote 10 plays in 6 years. 4 of his plays won first

place in the Dionysia, and the rest placed second. He made many innovations to the theater,

including a machine to raise and lower people to create the effect of flying and an increased

number of people in the chorus to allow for a more involved plot. He also introduced the idea that

people are responsible for their own actions and control their own fate, so they cant blame the

gods for their problems. Of all his works, only seven of Sophocles plays remain fully intact.

Plato was one of the most influential philosophers in Greece. Platos real name was

Aristocles, but he adopted the nickname Plato, meaning broad shouldered, due to his physical

build. Plato was born in Athens Golden Age to an aristocratic political family. The political

corruption he observed is what convinced him to not go into politics. Instead, he became

interested in philosophy after meeting Socrates. Plato was one of Socrates students until Socrates

was put to death for his beliefs. Plato then traveled to Italy. When he returned, Plato founded the

Academy, Europes first school. There, Plato taught and learned for the rest of his life.

Pindar was actually born in Thebes, but lived in Greece for most of his life. He began his

career by writing a victory ode for a couple whose son won an Olympic game. From there, Pindar

was hired to write odes for monarchs and nobles until he died.

Homer is Greeces most famous author. Nothing certain is known about Homers life. His

name means hostage, which he probably was, for he lived during a time of war between all the

city-states. The ancient Greeks later referred to him as The Poet. Homer most likely came from

Ionia. He may also have been blind. In any case, he wrote the two most famous pieces of Greek

literature, the Iliad and the Odyssey, making him one of the most prestigious writers ever.

Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos. Legend says she was an ugly prostitute who

committed suicide by throwing herself off of a cliff. She wrote nearly five hundred poems, and

was hated for her work. Most of her poetry was destroyed, but a few were found in an Egyptian

trash site, and later, more were discovered to have been used to stuff a crocodile and wrap a

mummy. Sappho did have a group of girls as her students and admirers of her work. Many of her

poems include them.

Aristotle was born the son of a doctor, but was raised by Proxenus once his father died. At

seventeen, Aristotle became a student at Platos Academy. Later, he moved to the island of Assos,

where he was the head of a group of philosophers. He also met his wife there. After the death of

his wife, he returned to Athens and founded his own school, the Lyceum. He later had to move

again do to political unrest and died shortly after. During his lifetime, Aristotle wrote many

philosophical books on government and law that are the basis of our Western world.

Socrates was an influential Greek philosopher. He actually never wrote anything. He

studied Greek rhetoric. He questioned people on the street, getting them to examine their morals

and beliefs. Socrates taught Plato along with a group of other philosophers until he was put to

death by the government of Athens. He was convicted with atheism and treason and sentenced to

drink poison.

Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia. He studied under Aristotle as a youth.

Later, he united Greece, and spread the Greek empire over a vast amount of area. He devised new

and brilliant war tactics. He also improved the living standards of Greece, creating a system of

roads and irrigation. It is believed he died of alcoholism. Once he died, his empire fell apart,

dissolving into many small, unstable kingdoms.

Euripedes is one of the best writers of tragedy and sadness ever. Five of his plays won the

Dionysia. Although he won these prestigious awards, he was disliked during his lifetime, but

became extremely popular posthumously.

Dionysus is the Greek god of dance, poetry, song, theater, festivals, and drunkenness. He

was said to have invented wine and is one of the twelve main gods in Greek religion. In ancient

Greece, there was a very popular annual play-writing competition dedicated to him, called the

Dionysia.

For 1 years, from 1800 to 1, there was zero inflation. Since the abandonment of the gold standard in 1, there has been no restraint on the creation of money and debt out of thin air by the banking system. (1) Inflation has been a regular occurrence in our economy ever since. (1)

Since 150 there has been an 87% reduction in the value of a dollar. Based on the consumer price index, a dollar in 150 is worth only 1 cents today. (1) A postage stamp in the 150's cost cents, and they now cost 7 cents, a 1% jump in inflation. (1) A gallon of gasoline cost 15 cents; today it costs about $1.65, an 1100% increase. (1) A new house in 15 averaged $14,00; today it's $07,000, an inflation of 18%. (1) A dental crown used to cost $40; today it's $640, an inflation of 1600%. (1) Several generations ago a person worked 1.4 months per year to pay for government; they now must work 5 months to do the same. (1) In the past, one wage earner families lived well and built savings, with minimal debt, and college educated their children without loans. (1) In the past, families commonly only had one parent working, today both parents must work to produce enough income to pay the bills. If this rate of inflation continues, what is the next option, putting your kids into the workforce? With so many mothers and fathers both in the workforce, the real losers are the children of these parents. They must be brought up by daycare or other forms of child care. When today's 15-year old will retire, and with the value of today's dollar being worth just 1 cents, the value of the dollar will be just cents when compared to the 150 dollar. (1)

Inflation by definition is the loss of a constant purchasing value of the dollar, caused by an increase of the supply of money and debt creation by the financial system at a faster rate than general economic growth, resulting in a rise in the general price level of goods and services. () Its opposite is deflation, a fall in the general price or a contraction of credit and availability of money. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics produces the Consumer Price Index (CPI) yearly. The CPI measures average price changes in relation to prices in a randomly selected base year. () While the CPI is usually considered the most reliable estimate of inflation, some economists have questioned whether it overstates inflationary trends. Inflation results from an increase in the amount of circulating currency beyond the needs of trade. () When an oversupply of currency is created, the value of money decreases. () Deflation is brought about by the opposite condition. In the past, inflation was often due to a large entry of gold, such as took place in Europe after the discovery of America and at the end of the 1th century when new supplies of gold were found and exploited in South Africa. Recently the most common causes of inflation include government borrowing, the increase in the money supply, and a diminished supply of consumer goods which increase demand, causing prices to rise. ()

Inflation stimulates business and helps wages to rise, but the increase in wages usually fails to match the increase in prices, which causes actual wages to shrink. Stockholders sometimes falsely think they are making gains from increased business profits, but bondholders are actually loosing because their fixed percentage return has less buying power. () Borrowers also gain from inflation since the future value of money is reduced. Deflation lowers prices and increases unemployment through the depression of business. An abnormally steep and sudden rise in prices, sometimes called hyperinflation, may result in the eventual breakdown of an entire nations economic system. () One example of this occurred in Germany in 1 where prices rose ,500% in one month. () In the United States, annual price increases of less than about % or % are not considered indicative of serious inflation. () During the early 170s, however, prices rose by much higher percentages, leading President Nixon to apply wage and price controls in 171.

To better understand what inflation is, imagine that everything was for sale on the entire planet. Every good or service that exists today has the value of 100 units. Also, imagine that all the money in the world is also equal to 100 units today. Now, imagine that people worked very hard and increased the availability of goods and services on the planet to 10 units, a gain of % in global GDP. This would cause a deflated dollar because less money is chasing a small surplus of goods. Now imagine that the total global money supply increased from 100 units to 11 units globally, up 1%. With 11 units of money chasing only 10 units of goods and services, global price levels will gradually rise. Since there are only a limited number of things on which money can be spent, and increase in the money supply that exceeds the increase of available goods and services over the same time period is inflationary. When more money chases fewer goods and services, inflation is the inevitable result. ()

Deflation occurs when one of things happen. () First, if the total money supply rises slower than an increase in goods and services. () Second, if the total money supply shrinks and the goods and services expand, deflation occurs. () Third, if the total money supply shrinks faster than goods and services contract, deflation occurs. ()

It is intimidating to think that the value of your savings may only be as valuable as the rate of inflation allows. It is scary to think about what might happen to our lifestyles if inflation continues at it's steady pace. People's wages need to be adjusted accordingly to the rate of inflation.

In conclusion, inflation is a problem that is not going to be solved unless we go back to the gold standard or by some other government stability.

Discursive Essay

The Root Cause of Terrorism

Poverty and ignorance; disease and environmental disorder; corruption and political oppression, all of which lead to terrorism. Or is it a matter of power - who has it and how to get it - not of poverty. What is the "Root Cause of Terrorism"? That is what I have decided to write my discursive essay about.

What could possibly motivate these acts? What is there to be gained? And that drive and motivation still exists in the world today. But where is this faceless enemy? How do we stop it if we don't even know what it is?

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Terrorism

There are so many questions thrown about among the critics and the leaders of the world today, that one can't easily explain. But as much as possible as a fifteen year old, I try to put the facts and beliefs together to find at least an understanding of it in this short assessment of the issues put forward.

The desire to identify root causes and so be able to correct them is natural. Root causes have to be there. A man doesn't wake up one day and decide that he is going to go and kill innocent civilians. There must be an explanation for the unexplainable Why a teenaged Palestinian girl would blow herself up in an attempt to kill as many Jews as possible, or privileged young men of the Arab world plot to kill themselves while murdering thousands of American civilians.

Those who hold to poverty as the root cause do so even though it does not fit their facts. Even leaving aside multimillionaire Osama bin Laden, the backgrounds of the September 11 killers indicates that they were not living in poverty themselves All were either wealthy Saudis and Egyptians, citizens of the wealthy Gulf states, or rich sons of Lebanon, trained in and familiar with the ways of the West - not exactly the victims of poverty in Muslim dictatorships. Many poor Egyptians, Moroccans, and Palestinians may support terrorists, but they do not, and cannot, provide them with recruits. In fact, al-Qaeda has no use for uneducated peasants. They cannot participate in World Trade Centre-like attacks, they would be unable to make themselves unsuspicious in the West and will lack the education and training terrorist operatives need. Terrorists have been mostly always middle class, often upper class, and always educated, but never poor. The South American Tupamaros and Montoneros of the 170s were all middle class, as were their followers among the German Baader-Meinhof Gang, the Italian Red Brigades, Frances Action Directe, the Sandinista leadership in Nicaragua and, before it, Fidel Castros Cuban revolutionaries.

Environmentalist extremists, their animal-rights friends, anti-international corporation militants, anti-genetically modified plants fanatics - none of them poor or deprived, have already demonstrated a tendency for violence and should be expected to do so in more deadly and organized manners in the future.

This argument goes on to say the poor, in Muslim states may be the popular base of terrorist support, but they do not have the money. Ultimately, Islamic terrorism, just as its Marxist version in the West was a matter of power, who has it and how to get it, not of poverty.

On the other hand, maybe the root cause of terrorism is deprivation and oppression. I mean we should look at the most active terror region in the world and that is Middle East. Palestinians, as a fact, have been involved in terrorist activities. In fact, if you look at all terrorist activities in the world, mostly all seem to happen during the lands' occupation by oppressors or simple foreign force. For example in Palestine, Northern Ireland, they are living in occupied territories, which have been their homeland for centuries. You cannot generalise terrorism as one. In different parts of the world terrorism is caused by different things but in my view, mostly all are cries of freedom. Nobody can justify terrorism but should look at the cause of this horrible tragedy in our present societies and not just treat it as Mr. Bush calls it "Evil". In my opinion, the world is not as black and white as the president of the United States puts it. He talks of "good" and "evil", either you are "with us" or "against us". Mr. Bush speaks as if the world is that of what children see it, "good" or evil". I think this is absurd. There is always away forward, it is just hard to find. People have to be very patient for progress but also active.

And so, no matter what actions we might contemplate against terrorism, this faceless enemy, which lurks in the shadows of fear and frustration, breeds on hatred and disillusionment and fed by ignorance and poverty, will not disappear unless we build global harmony and stability through mutual tolerance and shared prosperity. Terrorism has now emerged as a different challenge, which has to be dealt with in a firm and measured manner. As we seek to wrestle with the worst ever challenge to humanity, our approach should not be cosmetic nor guided by emotion or anger. Surely the perpetrators of terrorism, whosoever they are and wherever they may be, must be brought to justice. Our battle must not remain kept to retaliation and revenge. We must tackle the causes that give rise to forces of hatred and violence.

Modern liberalism and its offspring, the welfare state, have dominated American politics since the 10s. Both have received a great deal of criticism, from both the left and right. For many conservatives, the welfare state violates the rights of property, derives people of their liberty, is inefficient, unfairly favors certain organized interests, and creates a dangerous dependency on the state. Critics from the left have argued that the welfare state is dependent on the success of capitalist firms and thus remains captive to the investment decisions of the a narrow group of corporate executives and their shareholders. However, both American conservatives and liberals share some variations of neo-liberal thought that accept the tension between the welfare state and the private marketplace. Events in recent years have strengthened these similarities (Levy ).

The welfare state is not the only part of American culture and politics that has been imprisoned by the American economic market. The people of America have found themselves disillusioned and unable to define themselves and identify with others without the help of the corporate state. The sense of community that this country started out with and prided herself upon for several centuries has been replaced with a certain type of individualism based on competition, greed, and selfishness.

The economic market has become more and more the myth that it can solve all of our problems, both as an individual and as a country. The great deception that former President Ronald Reagan successfully pulled off on the people of this country in the 180s is ever-present decades later. The former Republican president gave us the notion that individual economic greed leads to common economic gain is one that contributes to our shackles and chains that truss us to our economic market and the corporate state. President Reagan so efficiently and thoroughly deceived the citizens of this nation that he was able to construct a deep ideological contradiction in American life. According to the myth that he advanced, capitalism is both individualistic and conservative, thought the terms of that proposition are mutually contradictory. Although by some degree, capitalism is motivated by individualist attitudes and attributes, capitalism is not individualistic. The economic market creates an interdependence of workers dependent on other workers, workers dependent on factories, makers dependent on distributors, and so on and so forth. This interdependence facilitates an environment that diminishes the importance and reliance on the abilities and responsibilities of an individual worker in the capitalist system and the market.

It is strange to see capitalism posing as an individualist, but it is even more anomalous for capitalism to act as the voice of conservatism. Conservatism, in a minimal definition, wants to conserve; but capitalism is an instrument for change, for expansion. The capitalist system is driven toward ever-new resources, products, and evolving markets. It reorders life drastically. Capitalism changes people from providers of self-sufficiency to specialists in a factory, whose reward for imposition of uniformity and regularity in their lives is the hope of a richer return from ever more distant parts of an expanding market. In fact, there is nothing less conservative than capitalism. It expends, in order to expand; it razes to rebuild, it destroys to employ.

The economic market in America wields tremendous influence over society, culture, and politics in America. It wields so much influence that we have became a slave to it and we are allowing it control all of our interests and distort our perspectives. The loss of identity and community for individuals is reason enough to see the destructiveness of the market and capitalism, but what is even more disturbing is the imprisoning of institutions and policy-making in the political process. Our major political actors in Washington, D.C. are too often concerned with the economic ramifications of their actions, decisions, or votes on too many policy areas to take indispensable and efficient action. Policy areas such as the environment get thrown to the wayside because it is seen as a necessary expenditure in a system controlled by monetary incentives and corporate agendas. By allowing the market to dominate our political process, we are allowing the market to weaken democracy and diminish the capacity for growth and progress toward being a better and stronger nation. Permitting such blatantly harmful effects on and a defilement of the political environment of this country is a travesty and one that should not be taken lightly.

Being imprisoned takes away how one defines his self, his life, and his beliefs. Bound by rules, conformity, and habit, one loses his identity, his self-worth, and sense of purpose. The warden, the prison guards, the state does not see every man incarcerated as a single, distinguishable and unique person, but rather as a collective force that must be dealt with as such. As prisoners, the concern with the everyday function is not a high standard of living, or growth as a person, or even identification with those around you. The emphasis is order, routine. Life becomes mechanical; the person becomes a cog in the machine. This is the analogous to how we are treated when we deal with capitalism and the market. We are no longer distinctive individual human beings; we are consumers that must be dealt with as a collective force. Every element and variable must be controlled to make sure that the system (the market) is treated as the number one priority and everything else is secondary. The market confines our society; the market limits our thinking, the market hinders political policy-making. The market is our prison.
