The Great Gatsby The Dream

Jay Gatsby, the central character of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby symbolizes the American

dream. The American dream offers faith in the possibility of a better life. Its attendant illusion is the

belief that material wealth alone can bring that dream to fruition. Through Gatsby, Fitzgerald brings

together both these ideas. Jay Gatsby thinks money is the answer to anything he encounters. He has the

best of everything. The fanciest car, the largest house, and the finest clothes. Jay has everything except

the object he most desires, Daisy. Gatsby believes he can win Daisy over with wealth, that he could

achieve the ideal she stood for through his material possessions.

One look at Gatsby's past and it could be seen that he was destined to get ahead in life. Mr. Gatz

told Nick, "Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do

you notice what he's got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me I et like a

hog once and I beat him for it" (18). Gatsby's determination to gain a large bankroll is a huge part of

the American dream. He believes that once he achieved his financial goal it would lead to a better life.

In America the car is one of the greatest status symbols. Gatsby's gorgeous machine is one of the

most majestic cars created. Nick's comments on the vehicle describe its luster, "...and there in its

monstrous length with triumphant hatboxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes...Sitting down behind

many layers of glass in a sort of leather conservatory we started towards town" (68). The use of the

symbolic automobile can be seen as a demonstration of how an ideal based on materialism alone can be

destructive. This was the fatal car which kills Myrtle Wilson and indirectly leads to Gatsby's death.

Appearance is another important factor toward Gatsby's dream. In his quest to win Daisy's heart

Gatsby chooses to wear his best outfit. "...the front door opened nervously and Gatsby in a white

flannel suit, silver shirt and gold colored tie hurried in" (8). Silver and gold are the colors of wealth,

Gatsby's sartorial splendor is as lavish as any of the other items he owns. Gatsby's shirts are more

then just garments towards Gatsby. They are some of the many fascinating objects he possesses that

were created by money. These shirts contribute towards Gatsby's vision of the American dream, that

his money and belongings will create happiness for him.

Another major object of Gatsby's dream was his incredible house. Jay states to Nick and Daisy,

"My house looks well, doesn't it? See how the whole front of it catches the light" (5). Jay gave Nick

and Daisy the grand tour of his house showing of all of his worldly possessions. Room after room,

everything was shown and mentioned. At the sight of his piles and piles of shirts Daisy broke down.

"They're such beautiful shirts, it makes me sad because I've never seen such--such beautiful shirts

before" (8). Jay Gatsby's ideals were parallel to the typical American dream. He wants to claim his

objective by the use of his assets. He thinks that his money will give him happiness in life through love

and his personal belongings.

Even the richest man in the world can't have everything. Material wealth could provide many things

for Jay Gatsby but not the thing he most desired. Although his wealth drew Daisy closer to him, he

never truly could have possessed her heart. He demanded Daisy to state that she had never loved Tom

Buchanan. "Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby, "I love you now--isn't that enough? I can't

help what's past. I did love him once--but I loved you too." (1-140). Jay's true love still remained

with her uncaring husband, Tom. Jay Gatsby's dream was smashed when he found out that even all of

his assets weren't enough to woo Daisy to him.

Jay Gatsby's belief in the American dream keep him from realizing reality. He believes that if he

worked hard enough and made enough money that he could have anything. He wants to perceive the

world as a place where sufficient wealth would enable him to recapture and recreate the past he desired

with Daisy. Gatsby began planning for his dream when he was young. This can be seen from his journal

he wrote as a young man which was discovered by Mr. Gatz. His attempt to accomplish his dream with

cars and shirts could not have been successful. The American dream cannot be accomplished, money is

just one factor towards happiness in this world.

Kellogg's strategy was to produce a web site provided specific product line and brand information to interested consumers. The page displays particular product descriptions, nutrition information, and recipes. Provided as well are company contacts allowing direct consumer response. Corporation facts and financial statements are also available. The overall goal of these sites are to reinforce the brand images portrayed by the companies' other advertisements, such as, television commercials, radio spots and print advertisement. Kellogg's does this by posting additional information about its products. New products are promoted in this site to entice those familiar with the Kellogg's name into trying new line extensions. Parents, those with illnesses or allergies, and exercise enthusiasts will find nutritional information about their favorite products. The site is easy to navigate through and does not bombard the consumer with overwhelming amounts of information in a cluttered manner. The site is concise and allows the company's messages to be readily absorbed. General Mills produced a web site that has an abundance of company information and hyperlinks to individual product and service pages. Its many product categories, line extensions and brand names allow the company to post diverse information in accordance with the different product positions. It also uses this web site to promote new products. The General Mills web site itself only posts company information, line extensions, news, and online shopping opportunities. The sight's links give access to a variety of information. Parents have the option to explore the Cheerios parent page and educators might be interested in the Box Tops for education program General Mills sponsors. Health conscious consumers would be attracted to Cheerios heart healthy news and kids may check out the you rule your school page. The information provided by this site is varying and a dispersed widely over many different web pages. This may be problematic for consumers who are not too familiar with surfing the net. Its broad layout may lead to confusion in finding or difficulty in discovering specific product information. Post Cereal's web site displays health related question and answer forums, product line information, recipes and snack ideas for their cereals. Those looking for new and alternative uses for pre-existing brands. Parents and house-wives may be those specifically targeted. It also attempts to enhance the image of the Post brand overall by providing historical information. This is in an attempt to distinguish the company as on that has established itself and also provides quality products. Those who produced this page may not have taken into consideration the possibility that loyal Post Purchasers may not know that Kraft is Post's parent company and must go through Kraft's web sight to access Post's page. Breakfast cereal is a product that requires little involvement on behalf of the consumer. The customer knows likes and needs and bases his purchasing decisions of them. One consumer may like cereals with a lot of sugar while others may look for those high in fiber. Once a consumer finds a cereal that he/she likes they tend habitually purchase it. Most cereal purchasers have a select few cereals they are partial to and routinely buy them. (Speaking from personal experience) The Web can be used to establish familiarity and allow consumers access to updated product information. Those navigating these product sites are most likely loyal brand buyers and are in search for more information. They are more willing and open to the messages and advertisements displayed by the manufacturers. Loyal customers also are exposed to the company's Web address because it is generally printed on the product labels. This almost forces the habitual buyer to memorize it. The enormity of the Web may lead consumers to become lost or may make finding the site itself difficult. Also not all buyers have access to computers or may be computer illiterate. The Web is a useful tool for keeping old consumers loyal and up to date in regards to their favorite brands. Web pages provide a cost effective means to distribute additional product information. Consumers go to the web site seeking the company's message. It offers a means of direct consumer feedback by encouraging buyers to e-mail their opinion of the brands. It can also be used as a research tool by counting the number of hits there are for a particular products web page. This recording my reflect consumer interest in the product. Web masters may find difficulty in making accessibility and navigation simple enough for all users. Exactly what message and information should be posted and consumer awareness of the web site itself may also prove to be obstacles to be overcome by sight producers.

Originally, I had picked the country of Algeria because the flag really stood out and made me think of what the symbols and colors of the flag might mean. Due to no information on the website that we did our research on, the country did not fall into the Middle East region. Since I liked the flag of Turkey with its moon-star symbol and bright orange color, I decided to learn more about it.

Turkey is known to have a Republican Parliamentary Democracy. The head of government is the prime minister, who represents the majority party or coalition in parliament. The president, as chief of state, is chosen by parliament for a seven-year term. All citizens over age 0 are entitled to vote. The official language of Turkey is Turkish. In addition, about 10 percent of the population speaks a different primary language, usually Kurdish or Arabic. Islam ceased to be the official state religion of Turkey in 18. Nevertheless, percent of the population is Muslimabout four-fifths of whom are Sunnites, and the remainder mostly Shiites found in the southeast. Christians account for less than 0. percent of the population. The Jewish community numbers about 0,000. Turkey is made up of mostly mountains; narrow costal plain; high central plateau (Anatolia). Farming here is restricted to less than one-fifth of the total area. The central Anatolian Plateau, the largest geographic region in Turkey, is surrounded on all sides by mountains. Turkey experiences long, hot summers and mild, rainy winters. In addition to good supplies of coal and iron ore, Turkey has a number of small but important mineral deposits, such as chromium near Guleman and Fethiye, high-grade magnetite at Divrigi, and lead and zinc in scattered areas. Boron, copper, and silver are also found, and petroleum occurs in the southeast. Turkey also has natural hazards that include severe earthquakes, especially in Northern Turkey, along an arc extending from the sea of Marmara to Lake Van. Turkey has a population of about 5,640,14. Out of this population a total of 85% can read and write. The birth rate is 18.1 births per 1,000 population and the death rate is 5.5 deaths per 1,000 population. People don't really get to live to be that old. The average life expectancy for a male is 68.8 years and for a female, 7.71 years. The culture of Turkey differs from ours. A transition from Islamic artistic traditions under the Ottoman Empire to a more secular, Western orientation has taken place in Turkey. Turkish painters today are striving to find their own art forms free from Western influence. Sculpture is less developed, and public-monuments are usually heroic representations of Atatürk and events from the war of independence. Folk music is a source of inspiration for longer symphonic works. Literature is considered the most advanced of contemporary Turkish arts. Many critics regard Kemal Tahir as the greatest modern Turkish novelist. Among authors translated into English is Yasar Kemal, author of Memed, My Hawk , a prizewinning novel of a modern Robin Hood, which won the author his international reputation; Anatolian Tales; and Seagull, a story that blends myth with realistic depiction of provincial life in modern Turkey. Turkey maintains state operas in Istanbul and Ankara, the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul, three music conservatories, a national folk dance troupe, and other cultural institutions. Christian churches converted to mosques, and mosques built by the famous 16th-century Turkish architect Sinan, are in Istanbul, Edirne, Bursa, and other cities. The Sultan's Palace is now a museum housing the imperial treasures and relics of the Prophet Muhammad. Ankara's Museum of Anatolian Civilizations has outstanding Hittite, Phrygian, and other exhibits. Among the largest of Turkey's many libraries are the National Library, in Ankara, and the Beyazit State Library, in Istanbul. I believe that Turkey is a developing country for two reasons these reasons are the fact that the peoples' life expectancy is very short compared to a developed country like the U.S. Like I mentioned before males live to be about 6 and women about 7 years old. Another reason could be because the GDP is only 6%, which means the total value of goods and services produced in a country over a period of time show that the economic activity regardless of who owns the productive assets in that country is very low. Hopefully, one day Turkey will be known as a developed country.

"Helping others can improve our own lives" this is the message we get from texts such as ''The Messenger' and 'Amelie'. In 'Amelie' we are shown the beginning of a young woman's crusade to make the lives of people she meets better in one way or another. It is the fact that Amelie chooses to help people that contrasts with Ed in ''The Messenger' who is at times forcefully encouraged to carry on and has had his path predetermined by a mysterious character. In both Ed's and Amelie's case helping others improves their own life in one way or another.

At the beginning of 'The Messenger' Ed is a very pessimistic character with not much ambition or excitement in his life, all this changes however when he inadvertently prevents a bank robbery. After the bank robbery cards begin to appear in Ed's letterbox with addresses or clues on them. Ed then visits the addresses and helps people at the addresses. Ed experiences both loving appreciation and violent retribution during his tasks keeps going until the final card. One of the more significant quotes in the novel was when the attempted bank robber spoke to Ed in court and said "You're a dead man… remember it everyday you look in the mirror".

In Amelie Amelie's crusade to help people begins after she finds a hidden box containing the childhood memories of a man who had lived in her apartment decades before she did, she decides to try and find the man and give him the box and that if he is touched Amelie will become a regular do-gooder. Amelie required no more motivation to continue her good deeds other than to see the reactions of people she has helped, that's not to say she only committed good deeds. At some stages during the film Amelie had to punish someone to be nice to someone else. Amelie took revenge on grocer Collingnon for his poor treatment of his assistant Lucien by breaking into his apartment and makes subtle yet significant changes to it, like all of her activities she does this anonymously. Ed on the other hand got to know most of the people he helped and most people knew it was him making the changes.

Ed had to resort to violence a couple of times during 'The Messenger' once to stop a man raping his wife and terrorizing his family and again to bring a pair of brawling brothers together. It takes Ed a long time and ultimately a loaded gun in the mail to gather the courage to tackle the rapist and he begins to feel bad about the case but perseveres. When he gets to the Rose brothers and beats one up in order for them to unite against himself he shows that he's begun to understand what he has to do and was happier than he normally would be when the Rose brothers retaliated violently because he realized that he's getting far more good out of helping people than bad.

At the end of both texts the do-gooder becomes the person who is touched themselves and in both cases they are touched the same way. In Amelie, Amelie through her crusade eventually meets Nino, a quirky character to say the least but Amelie herself is never limited to the realms of normality. After succeeding in helping everyone she could, Amelie finally got what was missing from her life a boyfriend in the shape of Nino, someone who she always felt a connection with. In 'The Messenger' Ed makes no secret of his infatuation with Audrey and his frustration at the fact that Audrey seems to fear love. The last card Ed receives has his own address and eventually finds Audrey knocking at the door asking if she could stay for good. These two parts of the two texts could be seen as the main character's reward for getting their hands dirty to improve the lives of others.

Amelie and 'The Messenger' both show us how much seemingly insignificant acts can help brighten up a person's day and they show the potential that an individual has when it comes to impacting on a number of lives. The great thing about stories like this is that it shows you that even in a very small amount of time one person can change many lives. It also shows that helping people with their lives can have great effects on your own and can be extremely rewarding and these stories also show that just because something doesn't seem to be affective at the time if you actually stand back and watch it unfold it may eventually become a significant factor that makes up the bigger picture.

Ann Hopkins

Ann Hopkins

When an individual is qualified for a particular position in business, it is readily assumed by most people that this individual should be equally considered as other candidates, for the position in question. The most acceptable reason for Ann Hopkins to be made partner has to do with her credentials and experience. Price Waterhouse's Office of Government Services in Washington, D.C. had honored Hopkins for her "outstanding performance," and that "no other candidate's record for securing major contracts was comparable." (1) This nomination for Hopkins proved to show that she was equally if not more qualified for candidacy in favor of partnership that year.

Hopkins has a clear interest in being facilitated with equal opportunity rights by means of being offered partnership to the company. Therefore, she feels that what is "morally right" for her is "morally right for others," where "everyone is of equal value."() This has to do with the level of fairness as to how candidates are selected to become partners. After Hopkins initially learned that she was not going to be promoted, she discovered that one reason for her rejection towards partnership was for the reason that she "had irritated some senior partners," and that she "should look more toward appearing more feminine" and "dress less in 'power blues.'"()

If one were to rightfully oppose Hopkins from becoming a partner in Price Waterhouse, the reason would have to be that interference as to who does and doesn't become a partner in the company should not be acceptable. When Hopkins was informed that she was denied partnership, she decided that she was left with four options leave the firm, join the international area to hopefully be proposed for partnership the year after, continue her work at Price Waterhouse, or sue the company with sex discrimination. (4) The reason for this would be that she is acting upon her own self-interests. In accordance to Kant's theory on the second categorical imperative, "people should not be treated as objects incapable of free choice." (5) Here, the company should be free or have the right to choose who will become partner of their corporation or not.

I believe that the result of Hopkins's case was justified. The process of choosing and deciding partnership into the company was conducive to company regulations and standards. It was understood that the company's ethical standards were high for partnership candidates. They were primarily looking for potential partners that were exemplary of standards such as loyalty to the company and staff that also exercised high levels of integrity and professionalism. It is my opinion that the company should use ethical reasoning for declining Hopkins's partnership to the company.

Integrity and loyalty to the company staff is unquestionably critical in business or working environments. In Ann Hopkins's case, however, the short and long forms that described her in the working environment, displayed numerous accusations of her lack of interpersonal and communicational skills. In the partnership admission process, there are great risks involved in the granting of partnership to potential candidates. This is mainly because partners are "more tenured and therefore people that have a likelihood or potential of abusing authority can cause serious long-term problems for the firm." (6) It was later stated that interpersonal skills were taken into great consideration in the process of admission. That is, where the firm had "consistently placed a high premium on a candidate's ability to deal with subordinates and peers on an interpersonal basis and to promote cordial relations within a firm which is necessarily dependent on team effort."(7) My reflection fits with my ethical theory in that ethical standards are essential in any environment, especially in business. I feel that it would be negligent for one to claim that ethics should not be part of an admission process. In essence, job qualifications ought to only be considered as part of the admission or hiring process, and not be the sole consideration as to whether or not one is accepted in a program or position.

What is your dream of the future? Most of people, I believe, have been asked of this question when they were only naïve children of whom the answers are deemed to be certain nobel occupations, such as scientists, professors of the campus, doctors, heads of a firm, etc. As they grew up a little older, like, in their youth, dreams either became more distant and abstract or more close and idiographic. Some of them lost their dreams to which they deviated off the track, while some transformed dreams into ideals which due to their boundless and endless effort, as well as the injudical basis of knowledges and humanities. Nevertheless, the situation may take a dramatical diversification since the time passed, and the objective surrounding affected sufficiently, the ideals faded and all the idealistic thoughts seem to be unfit perfectly to the realistic world. How comes the faith used to be the stanchion of their minds become so paradoxical to realism? Do things always tend to be so?

The story mentioned above, about the evanescence of one's idealistic world, sheds a light on two points the distinction between a dream and a ideal, and the whether or no paradox of idealism and realism.

Firstly, according to the story, one could be enlightened for the differences between dreams and ideals. Dreams could be as imaginative, fantastic, beautiful as possible and requiring no definite roots, backgrounds, or responsibilities. But in the case of ideals, they all rise from a fertile soil of solid determinations and steadfast faiths, feeding by the alimentation of profuse knowledges and canny intellegences. Not only do ideals have roots, but also they have wings.

Where the wings fly to, the idealitic minds encounter the wall of pragmatic society, there lies the second question Is idealism ambivalent to realism? In the society of human beings, too many rules and too much regulation are there for one to obey or be consistent to, that he or she almost forgot what had been chased after before. In the realm of politics, people failed to own a honest and creditable government which they had designed to. In the domain of study, one failed the college entrance examination for a accidently-catching of cold without any sign. In the case of commerce, chasing for profit and fulfilling the interest of a corporation are the whole reason why a enterprise live for, and they pay little concern to what they could do for others in need of helps.

A literary hero may indeed be defined as "a figure noble in personality, who has a tragic character flaw which ultimately causes his downfall." Victor Frankenstein, however, cannot accurately be defined as a literary hero. I take no issue with Frankenstein's possession of tragic character flaws; I concede that he has many. Nor do I argue that his downfall was the result of anything but hamartia. Victor Frankenstein's sole virtue lies in his truthful relation of the sordid story; he describes with grim accuracy his betrayal of Justine, the conscious endangerment of his darling Elizabeth, his craven attempts to flee the consequences of his youthful indiscretion, and the horrifying egotism which led the young Frankenstein to give life to a monster that would eventually destroy him. The willful selfishness Victor Frankenstein displays throughout the novel reveals his personality to be decidedly ignoble.

There are certainly a number of ways in which Victor Frankenstein's scientific techniques could have been put to innocuous, if not noble, use. Were Frankenstein interested simply in furthering scientific research and contributing to the knowledge of the time, he could easily have chosen to create an animal, rather than an eight-foot-tall humanoid monstrosity with human emotions. His motive for tampering with the natural boundaries between life and death is simple Frankenstein wishes to be a god.

A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs.

Frankenstein assumes that he will possess the absolute loyalty of his creations, regardless of how he treats them. He wishes to conquer the "ideal bounds" of life and death, but only for the sake of the notoriety and admiration such a feat is sure to bring. He wishes to rule over a kingdom of beings created by his own hand, but does not trouble himself over their happiness or quality of life. In essence, he aspires only to conquer. Fortunately, the day has passed when blunt ambition and thirst for power could be viewed as admirable qualities. We now demand that our conquerors display certain redeeming qualities, such as affection for their troops, bravery, mercy, love of country, or selflessness. Victor Frankenstein is devoid of such redeeming qualities, demonstrating in their place a grotesquely bloated ego that prevents him from thinking rationally, ethically, and nobly about the rights of his hideous creation and the consequences his experiment will have on the human race.

Just as daydreaming about becoming a doctor will not earn one a license to practice medicine, merely agonizing over one's moral transgressions will not grant one a heroic character or a noble spirit. Though Victor Frankenstein readily admits to his anguish, his guilt, and his impossible wretchedness, he does not consider admitting his sins to the court that tries Justine for a murder his monster committed. Both his reluctance to take responsibility for the role he played in Justine's wrongful conviction and his refusal to confess his crimes to either the authorities or his loved ones indicate that he values the public's favorable perception of his sanity and rectitude above Justine's life. He bemoans the "timorousness" of the character witnesses called upon in Justine's defense, but makes no effort to follow Elizabeth's example, and testify on her behalf. Indeed, Frankenstein's only physical response to his cousin's unjust conviction is to excuse himself from the situation

…I rushed out of the court in agony. The tortures of the accused did not equal mine; she was sustained by innocence, but the fangs of remorse tore my bosom, and would not forego their hold.

Though Justine is the subject of the prosecution's condemnation and bears the resulting punishment, it is Frankenstein's personality which is truly on trial. We consider Frankenstein's unspoken defense of his own inaction, and find him guilty of the cowardice and ignobility of character that allows him to observe Justine's misfortune but dismiss it, in favor of the self-indulgent contemplation of own victim status. It may be that no effort on Frankenstein's part would have been sufficient to influence the jury or console Justine. But literary heroes are notorious for fighting impossible fights, driven by an innate sense of morality. Frankenstein's self-pity in the face of Justine's imminent execution is behavior better suited to a literary villain, not the hero.
