I worked in the Rite Aid Pharmacy in Davis. My activities and assignments consisted of answering phones for the pharmacist, answering the drive-thru, talking with customers and getting their prescriptions for them, putting prescriptions that the pharmacist filled back on the shelves, learning prescriptions, filing, learning how to delete and add new prescriptions on the computer, faxing papers to doctors, and a lot more. I learned so much at this internship, more than at any other internship. Its really great how they associate us with everything in the pharmacy so that way if we want to work there as a part-time job, we will already be ready for that. I also noticed how a lot of customers tend to get very mad if there prescription is taking a while or if they don't have them on record. I realized that the pharmacists have to deal with a lot of rude people and I saw how frustrating it can get but I watched how the pharmacists dealt with these kinds of issues in such a calm manor no matter how angry the customers got. I am very interested in doing pharmacy and this internship allowed me to get a better idea of what I am looking at for the future.

The knowledge that I gained about the pharmacy is that working as a pharmacist is not an easy job. It requires a lot of hard work and patience. I learnt about the way the pharmacists operate. I also found out that there is a lot of paperwork involved as well, which ends up taking a lot of time for the assistants. I helped out with the paper work a lot because I saw how much time it was taking up for the technicians when they were already so busy. I also realized how big of a thing organization is at a pharmacy. The prescriptions are all placed on the shelves by generic or brand name. The prescriptions are all filed in alphabetical order for the customers to come pick up. Organization is the key to pharmacy. If even just one paper is not filed correctly, it can cause a lot of problems causing customers to get very angry. No matter how much of a rush you are in, everything must be placed in its exact proper place before going on. I worked from -1 am every Friday. I loved working there. The pharmacy technicians and assistants were all extremely kind and showed me everything I needed to know about the pharmacy the minute they met me. They wanted me to get the most out of this internship that I could. It is people like these that make a person feel so comfortable and work well with the group that can make an internship so much better than it could be as opposed to people like at my internship last year that didn't care to show me around and let me participate in anything. However, we do learn at every internship, some are better than others, but you always have to make the best of every possible situation and try to get the most learning experience as possible. I learnt a lot about the overall structure of the pharmacy and how the pharmacist's work.

This internship helped me in terms of my future academic plans because I want to go into pharmacy and become a pharmacist. Working in the pharmacy got me oriented to what goes on and what the pharmacist's daily lives are composed of. I know how the technicians and assistants work and what they do and I really came to appreciate how hard they work and how much they care about their customers. I met a lot of really nice assistants and I could see how much they cared about their customers. My expectations of the internship were certainly met and I gained even more knowledge than I thought I would. I was also able to work with the customers more closely than I thought that I would. That was a really good experience for me because I realized that I love working with the customers and getting to know them and making them feel better. It made me happy to make the customers feel better and to help the technicians whenever they needed it. My expectations of the supervisors were met as well. They were very friendly and energetic people who showed me that they really care about their customers. They were always willing to show me new things and help me to get oriented and give me directions anytime I needed them. I feel really lucky to have gotten a chance to work with such a great group of people. Even the pharmacist went out of his way to find out about our pharmacy club at UC Davis and told me his ideas about what he thinks I should do to get into pharmacy school. He talked with me a lot about my plans and how I plan on obtaining them. This really helped me because I haven't really talked to many people about this before and it was very touching to know that someone cares enough to give me ideas into following the right path. I would definitely recommend this internship to anyone going into pharmacy as one of the best learning experiences you'll obtain. I can also say that after working here anyone can say whether they still want to go into pharmacy in the future or not, for anyone who is confused and looking to get an idea if its something they are interested in. I now know that I definitely want to go into pharmacy and working here was what helped me come to this decision. I plan on definitely keeping in touch with the pharmacist and maybe even applying for a part time job there, as well as getting advice from the pharmacist about my future plans in becoming a pharmacist.

Introduction

One of the most significant and controversial aspects of South Africa's fiscal agenda this year is the income tax and exchange control amnesty. The amnesty frees individuals from civil penalties and criminal liabilities for the illegal shifting of funds offshore in contravention of exchange control on or before 8 February 00. It also releases taxpayers from all income taxes, interest and civil and criminal penalties stemming from the failure to disclose gross income or capital gains from foreign sources arising on or before 8 February 00. South Africans are estimate to hold between R0bn-R80bn illegally offshore and this amnesty will certainly help broaden the tax base.

Residence- based taxation

The adoption of a residence-based system of taxation from 1 January 001 means that South African residence are now taxed on their worldwide income. Taxpayers who do not disclosed the income earned by their offshore assets are guilty of tax evasion. But by disclosing this foreign income South African residents, who hold foreign assets in contravention of the Exchange Control Regulations, would be incriminating themselves. Thus Finance Minister, Trevor Manual, promulgated an exchange control and tax amnesty in his 00 Budget speech (004) to provide taxpayers with an opportunity to extricate themselves from this predicament and legalise their affairs.

Custom Essays on Tax amnesty

Persons who may apply for amnesty

The Draft Exchange Control Amnesty and Amendment of Taxation Laws Bill (the Bill) does not grant a blanket amnesty to all taxpayers with undisclosed offshore funds. Section (1) of the Bill (00) limits the eligible applicants to natural persons who are resident in the Republic. Thus, companies, close corporations and offshore trusts are unable to apply for amnesty.

Period for amnesty applications

There is a limited amount of time given to taxpayers to apply for amnesty. Section 4 of the Bill states that applicants

'…must submit an application by way a sworn affidavit or solemn declaration to the amnesty unit during the period commencing 1 May 00 and ending 0 October 00…'

Tax advisers have voiced concerned that the period of the amnesty may be too short as pointed out by Thomas (0084) in his article 'Wait for more details'.

Circumstances where amnesty may not be granted

There are certain circumstances under which amnesty may not be granted. The Bill in s states that amnesty will be denied where

· applications are not submitted within the deadline;

· an investigation into the applicant's affairs is already underway; or

· foreign assets have been derived from unlawful activities. In these circumstances, the amnesty unit is required to provide the applicant with notice of denial, setting out the reasons thereof.

Amnesty levy and tax relief

There will however be a financial sanction for coming clean. Section 11(1)(a) of the Bill states that a 5% penalty (based on the market value of offshore assets) will be imposed on foreign assets repatriated to South Africa. Section 11(1)(b) of the Bill levies a 10% penalty on disclosed foreign assets, which the taxpayer chooses to keep offshore. These penalties are not onerous and should not hinder the flow of these funds back to South Africa. As Cresswell (00) in his article 'Owning up to offshore funds skips tax run-out' argues a 10% penalty is a fair concession for many years of tax free growth earned.

Those that choose not to take up the amnesty and continue to hold undisclosed funds offshore in contravention of exchange control and tax legislation will face heavy penalties if found guilty. Thomas (0084) in his article 'Wait for more details' states that 'penalties include fines of up to 00% of the tax evaded or two years' imprisonment'. Thus, many experts are advising taxpayers to take this opportunity to become legal.

Secrecy and confidentiality

In Thomas's article 'Wait for more details' (0084), he quotes KPMG's executive director Danie Folscher as saying that

'a fear for many and possibly the biggest deterrent, will be that of being permanently "orange-tagged" by SARS.'

The Bill does provide taxpayers with some reassurance. Section 1() of the Bill requires the amnesty unit to act as an independent body and s 1() guarantees that the secrecy provisions of s 4 of the Income Tax Act 58 of 16 will apply to all members of the amnesty unit.

Conclusion

Despite the reservations, this amnesty is beneficial to both taxpayers and the fiscus. It provides taxpayers, who illegally hold funds offshore, a relatively cost-effective method of legalising their affairs and provides the fiscus with an opportunity to increase revenue by broadening the tax base. This will finally bring South Africa into line with international tax practice. Bibliography

All my life has been about change and adjusting to change. I have moved to three different states, seven different towns, and seven different schools. However no amount of physical change could prepare me for the emotional change I was going to received in 001. After my grandfather die from liver cancer, my whole perspective on life changed. Although I was only 15, I realized that In life everything happens for a reason, and looks, popularity and money do not mean anything because once we die, none of that is taken with us. But what is taken with us is love and peace. I want to look back on my life and be pleased with how I left the world. hat I helped a homeless man to get back on his feet, or helped a cancer patient be happy when they died. I want to know that I did not only something good for mankind but something good for my spirit and my heart

There is scarcely a day that goes by when I dont hear about some new problem that will soon threaten us all. While some of these problems such as El Nino, earthquakes, and other natural disasters cannot be stopped -- there are other challenges such as the spread of racial hatred, rising risk of disease spread, and the growing levels of civil unrest throughout much of the world which threaten many lives everyday. Most of the futures challenges will only be made possible if all people, regardless of race, color, or nationality, attempt to work together for a stronger world. There are many ways in which I believe that I can help society meet this future challenge of coming together as a united world.

To get back on the right path takes perseverance, drive and passion to rise above difficulties. My path was shown to me at an early age. I want to help the people who can not help themselves. My life experiences have helped me to appreciate the value of this goal, and I look forward to reaching it.

I got a chance of a lifetime the other day. It all started when one of my friends who is an inventor, invited me over to see her new invention. Much to my surprise it turned out to be a time machine. I know you are thinking, no way it could work. Well I was thinking the same thing and here is where it started to get really good, she said it worked and that I could go anywhere in time I wanted. Yes, she was going to let me travel back in time where ever and to whatever time I wanted to go to. This was the hard part where to go, what to see, who to talk to? I mean I was still skeptical about it even working but the mere possibility that it could intrigued me, enough so that I was willing to give it a try. After much thought and consideration I chose the place. I wanted to go to England in the late 100s. Why this year and in England of all places you ask, its because I am a huge fan of Chaucers The Canterbury Tales, and I am hoping that I can run into one of the pilgrims from the story.

So here I was sitting in this huge thing of what looked like a piece of scrap metal. While my friend is praying that I will come out of this alive. She made the final check and then put the date into the machine, then the place. All that was left was to push the big green button. Three, two, one we counted and she pushed the button. Nothing happened, then all of a sudden the machine started shaking. As I was looking around the room everything was kind of blurry, like I couldnt get my eyes to focus. Next thing I know I blink my eyes and hello country side. We still didnt know where we were but we were definitely not at home anymore. Before we could even get ourselves un-strapped a knight, yes a knight with full armor and in all his valor passed by on his horse. I forgot to mention earlier that my friend and I dressed in our medieval wear so that we would fit in should we run into anybody. This was my chance, I jumped out and ran up beside him. I could tell I startled him but he seemed to recover quickly. This is when it started to get really wild. I told him I was from another country far away and that I was wondering if I could ask him a few questions about his native country, and he agreed! So we walked over to some rocks which over looked a small pond and that is where the real story begins.

We started out with an obvious question, his name turned out to be Arthur. I then asked how old he was, he said middle twenties. Finally what family he had, he was living with his only brother, his mother and father had both passed away after getting sick a couple of years before. He was also of course Catholic. Next I asked him about his career. Of course he had no clue by what I meant, which reminded me to be careful and use the Middle English I learned in college. I knew it would come in use someday. Anyway, he had always wanted to be a knight and had got his chance in his late teens. In fact he had just gotten back from a battle. His father had taught him and his brother to fight. His brother had chosen though to be a scholar. Arthur was also an educated man who was well read. In his free time he enjoyed reading and he often heard stories when he went to court. I was beside myself could he have heard Beowulf perhaps at court? I could barely hold back my excitement when I asked him and in fact he had.

I asked him his take on Beowulf as a character. Arthur conveyed to me that he had heard the story at an early age and had since wanted to be just like Beowulf. This story in fact made him want to be a knight. He told me about how before every battle he would pray to God to watch over him and let his will be done, just like Beowulf. He also talked about how he wished he could be as courageous and unselfish like Beowulf had been. I could tell that Arthur really loved the story and took it very seriously.

Next we talked about his personal life and whether he was planning on getting married. He was courting a lady and hoped that they would soon wed. He also enlightened me that he was looking forward to having a family some day nothing big but definitely a boy to carry on his name. I asked him if he wanted his son to be a knight too? To this he sat and thought, then replied that it was a hard job and that the things he had to see and do he would prefer to never think about again. Still he thought it was the noblest of professions. He said that it was his job to spread Christianity to the barbarians to bring God in their lives.

With the day coming to an end he told me that he had to go. Although I was disappointed, I agreed that it was getting late. My friend had gone into town which turned out to be very close to where we landed. She had spent the day soaking up everything she could. As we met at the machine we were both bubbling over with excitement about our day. We then prepared ourselves for the trip home. However weird and unbelievable this story may seem it is all true. Where is the machine you ask, well unfortunately it broke when we got home. We had landed in a cloud of smoke and my friend has yet to get it to work again. Nevertheless I will never forget my day in England, that warm sunny afternoon and the conversation I shared with a noble knight.

In most of Algers works he focuses on a young mans progress from a poor background pushing toward fame and fortune. Alger (18-18) wrote his short stories over a century ago, and explains past and present times are no different while pushing forward to succeed economically. The theme and characterization in this short story will convey to the audience how Alger feels toward hard work and its rewards, and how people carry themselves when pushing toward something you want desperately. An analysis of theme and characterization, in Horatio Algers , From Ragged Dick are just a few thing that stood out while reading his short story

Alger gives a through description on how he feels toward working hard and the rewards that will come after a person completes the battle with his goals. At the beginning of the story he informs the reader that Dick wants a better job, such as being in a store or counting room, but keeps getting let down in his attempt. For example, after making several ineffectual applications, Dick began to think he should be obliged to stick to his profession until the next season. What Alger is trying to point out is that Dick is going through the hard times in his battle, and by saying, ... stick to his profession until next season, Alger is indicating that no matter how tough times get, go on with it. Then in one flash his oppotunity came, and it was not what you would expect it to be. He saves Mr. Rockwells child from the water after falling from the boat, even though Dick jump in the water before the man could say a word, he missed out on some details in which th man had to say. Mr. Rockwell, owes our hero Dick a big favor, because just as Dick jumped into the water, Mr. Rockwell says, ...ten thousand dollars to anyone who will save my child. Being that Dick doesnt realize that Mr. Rockwell owes him, he does not take to his kind offer because of his good nature and spirit. Dick takes his first step on his way to success when Mr. Rockwell brings him new clothes for the ones that got wet in his rescue. I say this because he really does not have to accept them, but being that his old clothes is wet, and the new clothes is much nicer material, Dick feels that he is now suited for the kind of career he wants. Now, when he received these new clothes he also received a letter that basically said, call Mr. Rockwell to set a time to meet him. Apparently Mr. Rockwell set up a job for Dick, because Mr. Rockwell owes Dick for rescuing his son from the water. He can not repay him in cash, so he repays him with a great job opportunity in a counting room, a job that he had always wanted. The point given to me is that Dick is on his way to where he wants to be, if he keeps himself around the right people. Since the salary was going to be seven dollars more than what he was making at his previous job, he felt that he had accomplished his goal. Alger emphasizes that perserverance and persistence have its rewards.

Throughout the story, Dick is portrayed as a calm, focused, and determined person. For example, when Dicks clothes were stolen, he says, ...Dick did not shed many tears over his loss, as, in his present circumstances, he never expected to have any further use for the well-worn garments. This passge informs the reader he is calm about the situation because he receives new cloths from Mr. Rockwell. So Dick feels that his loss was somebody elses good fortune, because he has no use for the well-worn garments. Bing a focused person is not a very tough thing for Dick, because he has in his mind that he is going to achieve his economic goal. For example, in the very beginning Dick is looking for a position in a store or counting room, and until then he would keep blacking boots. The interpretation of this passge is that Dick will eventually find a job in a store or counting room, but until then he will keep blacking boots until his opportunity arrives. When his opportunity arrives he will no longer black boots, he will do the job that pays best and best fits him. His determination is not seen until he receives the job from Mr. Rockwell. Dick says, Ill try to serve you so faithfully, sir, that you wont repent having taken me into your service. Dick obviously believes that a determined person does not let any misfortune take away from his accomplishments.

In short, Alger emphasizes that perserverance and persistence have its rewards, and being a calm, focused, and determined person will help along the way while striving toward your goal. The audience did find out how Alger feels toward hard work, and how people carry themselves while trying to achieve a long time goal, when analyzation of theme and characterization was brought to life. The one good quality about this short story was that it enlightened me on how the times do not change when it comes to goal setting.

"Of Mice and Men" is an exhilarating novel written by John Stienbeck. I will examine the themes of friendship, racism, and dreams by examining evidence from the text about the characters George, Lennie and Crooks.

The story describes two characters, George and Lennie who travel around with each other, looking for work, so that their dream of one day owning their own land may come true. However Lennie's half-witted actions and tremendous strength lead to the death of a number of creatures, including the unnamed Curely's wife. Although Lennie means no harm by his actions, George felt he could not risk letting him ruin any more lives, so to prevent any further mishaps George shoots Lennie.

The predominant theme in the novel is friendship. George and Lennie are close friends who do everything together, take the blame for each other and will do almost anything for each other. "Lennie crawled slowly and cautiously around the fire until he was close to George." This quote shows how Lennie was attached to George and could not bare to leave him. It also displays Lennie's loyalty and trust for George and his childlike behaviour. Another quote, which shows George's deep concern, is "George said, 'I want you to stay with me, Lennie'." I personally find these quotes effective as they display George and Lennie's clear attachment to one another and demonstrate how they are dependant on one another.

Expanding the theme of friendship, George and Lennie have to put up with each other, and their annoying ways and habits, which is not always easy. They also have immense respect for one another, "Well I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy". This shows the relationship to be so close that it is quickly remarked on by others. "I turns to Lennie and says, 'Jump in'. An' he jumps. Couldn't swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him. An' he was so damn nice to me for pullin' him out. Clean forgot I told him to jump in'." This quotation serves to accentuate the trust Lennie has for George. I find this quote effective as it shows Lennie will do whatever George tells him to no matter how dangerous.

Cheap Custom Essays on "In a good novel, themes are portrayed by the characters." With reference to a novel you have read, discuss the above proposition.

Another primary theme in the story is the issue of racism. The characters in the book stay in a bunkhouse, but a black man called Crooks is left out because of his race. "They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink. Well I tell you, you all stink to me." This quote shows how others have a very racist view towards Crooks merely because of his skin colour. I find this quote particularly effective as it gives a balanced view, Crooks is defending himself by insulting others.

"Guys don't come into a coloured man's room very much." This quote shows what goes on in the daily life during the time this novel was written (17) and indeed what happens today. People avoid others of different race or colour. This quote is effective as it shows how Crooks is very aware that people don't want to be around him.

One other theme in the novel is dreams. George and Lennie are constantly talking about owning their own land, but it is unlikely to happen because of lack of money and jobs. "Lennie said, 'Tell about that place George.'

'I jus' tol' you jus' las' night'

'Go on tell again, George.'

'Well, it's ten acres,' said George. 'Got a little win'mill. Got a little shack on it, an' a chicken run. Got a kitchen, orchard, cherries, apples, peaches, 'cots, nuts, got a few berries. They's a place for alfalfa and plenty water to flood it'." This quote shows how George knew exactly what he was looking for. I find this quote valuable as it describes exactly what they had in mind in great detail and shows that they are so desperate for their dream to come true, they have been looking for something.

In conclusion, I find "Of Mice And Men" a good read, the characters, George, Lennie and Crooks are designed in such a way that they portray the themes of friendship, racism and dreams successfully.

The word 'ontology' is a Greek word relating to the concept of being. The ontological argument itself therefore an a priori argument that argues the existence of God by saying that He must necessarily exist. This argument is very important for religious believers, but has come under criticism from those who do not believe who say that it is flawed.

St Anselm introduced the first form of the argument in his book Proslogion and claimed that God was "aliquid quo nihil maius cogitari possit" which means nothing greater can be conceived.

In the next stage of Anselm's argument, he wanted to demonstrate that it is impossible to conceive of God not existing. God is eternal and, therefore, must be. Anselm felt that he had demonstrated not only the existence of God but also that his existence is "necessary" (must be).

Descartes developed Anselm's argument. His definition of God as a "supremely perfect being" is the basis of his argument. From this, Descartes believes we can conclude that God exists because existence is a predicate of a perfect being; Therefore, God must exist to avoid being self-contradictory. Descartes says that to imagine God without existence is like imagining a triangle without three sides.

Philosophers have also considered this argument in more recent times such as Norman Malcolm (necessary existence) and Alvin Plantinga (possible worlds). Iris Murdoch also pointed out that the ontological argument is not simply a piece of logic, but something that points to a spiritual reality that transcends any limited idea of God. However, this argument has also had its fair share of criticisms.

Gaunilo opposed Anselm, putting forward his own argument of the most perfect island. He said that if you were to believe this island must exist because of its perfection then you are a fool. By this, Gaunilo is trying to criticize the process by which Anselm moves from his definition of God to his suggestion of God's existence.

Of course Gaunilo has a point If the idea that a type of thing "than which no greater could be conceived" must necessarily exist, might this not apply to the most perfect potato or the greatest monkey? Aquinas says not, claiming that these are material things that go in and out of existence, unlike God.

However, Kant made a more successful criticism of Descartes' version of the argument. He objected to Descartes claim that denying God's existence is comparable to denying that a triangle has three sides. Kant offered the alternative of not having a triangle at all and therefore there are also no sides. He said that in the same way, if you don't accept the concept of God in the first place, it is a useless argument.

Further criticism comes from the Empiricist David Hume. The foundation of his philosophy is that you must go outside a concept to determine whether it exists in reality. He says that a concept can only exist when they can be proved with the senses. He says of the ontological argument " We cannot define something into existence, even if it has all the perfections we can imagine."

So, it would seem that someone who has no concept of God would not find this argument convincing, just as a religious believer will find that it confirms his or her faith. It would appear that mere definition is not enough. However, it would seem that Anselm was writing specifically for those already instilled with belief and had no intention of preaching to the unconverted "I have written the following treatise in the person of one who seeks to understand what he believes."

Therefore, it is evident that, despite some convincing elements within this argument, it only serves to strengthen a believer's faith with no value for the non-believer. Final analysis would reveal that Kant's criticism is probably the most accurate interpretation of this argument.
