The Guests


In part one of “The Snow Goose,” Philip Rhayader is portrayed as a lonely man, whose ugly appearance repels the people he encounters, but whose inner beauty and loving-kindness for all living thing are revealed throughout his years at the Great Marsh. Rhayader is a lonely twenty-seven-year-old hunchback when he first comes to the lighthouse in the Great Marsh. Rhayader, with his glowing eyes and clawed hand, is an outcast from most of society. He secludes himself in the lighthouse because of his failure of finding warmth from someone in his life. Some men feel sorry for him; he repels women. Men would like him if they got to know him. Despite his guise, his inner beauty is the opposite. He doesn’t hate; he loves man, the animal kingdom, and all of nature. Rhayader owns a sixteen-foot sailboat. He sails for long periods of time in search of the same quarry every time, birds. He sketches, photographs, and even brings birds home to his sanctuary. Normally he paints birds; sometimes he paints the countryside and the sunset. With his heart and soul going into his paintings, he thinks his Rhayader’s (paintings) are worth more than money. There are geese that come down each October from Iceland; they migrate back up north in the spring. The next year the same ones come back as guests because the birds have “germ-knowledge” or awareness that Rhayader’s lighthouse is a safe-haven, this makes Rhayader feel important, glad, less depressed, and not as lonely. Then one November afternoon, a child approaches the lighthouse studio, nervous and timid as a bird, with an accent that confirms her Saxon heritage. Close to fleeing for the door, the girl panics at the tall man with the black head and beard, and his hunched back. “What is it child?” says Rhayader with his deep kind voice reflecting his inner beauty. Motionless and frightened, she stands there. There is a bird in her arms, with stains of blood covering its whiteness. He can’t recollect what genre of bird it is instantaneously but when the girl edges forth into his studio he examines it. “In t’ marsh, sir, where fowlers had been. What- what is it, sir?” said the child with her Old Saxon accent. Rhayader replies, “It’s a snow goose from Canada. Sleep-Related Disorders


Other than nightmares, there are various sleep disorders which affect significant portions of the population. Insomnia, the inability to fall asleep or get enough sleep, affects up to 0% of people. It is often triggered by stress and results in worrying that inhibits proper sleep. Sleep apnea, actual lapses of breathing during sleep (mainly during REM sleep), is another common disorder often connected with obesity and/or intense snoring which results in excessive sleepiness during the day. It is harder to diagnose outside of the lab because the patients asleep while it happens and has little way of knowing about the source of the trouble (though devices have now been developed for home diagnosis). Sleep Paralysis is relatively common though rarely as a severe disorder. It occurs during sleep when a person partially awakens but is completely unable to move for some period after waking. Night terrors are also in this class, and differ from nightmares in that they occur during non-REM sleep and are usually very intense so that the sleeper awakes in panic, often screaming, with heart pounding, and with less recall of dream content.


Narcolepsy, often connected with sleep paralysis and vivid, frightening dreams at sleep onset, is characterized by irresistible daytime sleep attacks and collapsing at the onset of strong emotions (known as cataplexy) while remaining conscious (and so should not be confused with fainting).

In saying that the reason for dreams is this or that, or that they mean such and such, we often limit our overall experience of them. This is not to say that many very true, insightful and useful dream theories and methods don’t exist, but rather to give a hint of perspective on the incredibly vast, diverse, and enigmatic nature of the what, why, and how of dreams.


In line with our analogy, renown European physician Dr. Sigmund Freud, with his focus on phallic imagery and repressed wishes in dreams, perhaps had the proverbial elephant by the balls. Though quite true that male and female elements appear in dreams, and that dreams often bring up strong connections with our desires or have emotional roots our childhood, Freud’s is but one viewpoint. Carl Jung, perhaps the best known contemporary of Freud’s, put forth some very insightful frameworks for understanding the symbolism and nature of dreams, including his concepts of universal personality archetypes and the collective unconscious. Yet Jung himself wrote, I have no theory about dreams. I do not know how dreams arise. I am altogether in doubt as to whether my way of handling dreams deserves the name ‘method’. I share all my readers’ prejudices against dream interpretation as being the quintessence of uncertainty and arbitrariness. But on the other hand, if we meditate on a dream sufficiently long and thoroughly…something almost always comes of it. Jung added that this something is rarely of rational, scientific nature, but rather a practical and important hint which shows the patient in what direction the unconscious is leading him. Jung observed that dreams perform restorative, corrective, compensatory, prophetic and developmental roles in the psyche and believed that we must be ready at any moment to construct and entirely new theory of dreams.


Dream Analysis vs. Dream Integration


Rather than lumping all importance on analysis or having to figure out what a dream might mean, it helps to see dreams as experiences valid on their own. Experiences which can be cultivated organically whose roots delve into the rich depths of the psyche as they stem outward into the light of conscious awareness and begin forming their leaves of thought. Truly, they are an art form of the soul for creative self-expression, self-discovery and self-healing, and much benefit and fulfillment comes simply by remembering, writing, tape-recording, sharing, painting, enacting or otherwise birthing them into the physical world. It can be greatly worthwhile to harvest the dream fruits of personal insight and practical guidance, yet every dream affects us physiologically, emotionally, psychologically, and/or spiritually, and becomes part of our being, changing us regardless of whether we make any logical waking connections or not. Even when we spot such connections, it can be limiting to assume that this was the sole ‘point’ of the dream, and therefore drop further exploration or creative expression; carrying away golden coins, we may miss the priceless and treasured jewel fashioned or concealed within the chest itself. Dreams generally speak in a multi-dimensional language of feelings, images and multi-level associations rather than linear words and concepts. Says author Bernie Siegel, M.D., While our minds and our bodies communicate constantly with each other, most of this exchange occurs on an unconscious level. That’s why I often advise patients to start recording dreams, because the body cannot speak except by using symbols.


Dreams often come as series, throughout the night, for a few nights in a row, and/or within some natural cycle of weeks or seasons. They are also intimately interconnected with events in the dreamers life, and often even with events that are yet to occur (which can make literal interpretation a challenge). Otherwise, any dream which impacts you strongly or sticks with you clearly� especially the dream you remember just before getting up in the morning� along with dreams or dream fragments which spontaneously come to you later in the day, are the ones that your unconscious is trying to bring to your conscious attention. Dreams which have a powerful positive impact and leave you feeling uplifted, inspired or even completely awestruck can be understood, but better yet they can be integrated and have their beneficial impact magnified if you express them creatively (as with this issue’s exercise) by allowing them to blossom into a poem, painting, story, dance, song, collage, sculpture, or other art form. This same technique is also an excellent type of art therapy to express the fear and difficult feelings from less pleasant dreams.


Note the level of the psyche from which dreams come, which tends to be deeper at the start of the night (and often weirder) and closer to our waking awareness as morning approaches (dreams which are more likely to lend themselves to conscious understanding). Look first for simple practical advice about our daily routine such as diet, exercise, and challenges you face at school, work or in your relationships, yet trust that deeper issues are likely also undergoing resolution.

Lately, I’ve been really into this Chinese group called ‘F4’. (P/s Have enclosed a picture of them.) I know, I know, I know exactly what you all are going to say, “Oh My GOD! From what I gathered Kristof believes that if the Chinese have been more interested in money they would have rather traveled and conquered instead of worrying about their prestige and education. The man is running through the camp, with his eyes focused on the world of the afterlife. Eliezer mistakes the man for his father because this is Gods way of letting him know that his father will be moving on to a better world.


Third, the passage can be interpreted as having religious significance, and in this case the running man represents God. In the first section of the book, Moch� teaches Eliezer that he must learn to ask God the right questions, and this passage can be seen as Eliezer trying to understand the problem of why a just God would allow the concentration camps to exist. Throughout the book, Eliezer has been trying to work this question out in his head, and in this passage it is visually represented by of the unheeding man running and looking off into the distance. Eliezer receives no answer from the man, just as he will probably never understand the answer that God has to give.

Summary


Eliezer remains at Buchenwald until April 11. He has nothing to say of these last months in the concentration camps because after his fathers death, he became indifferent and emotionless, concerned only with eating. He is transferred to the childrens block.


On April 5, the SS guard is late to roll call, and everyone knows something must have happened. After two hours, an announcement goes out that all Jews must go to the assembly place. The children start to go to, but prisoners tell them to go back to their blocks, warning them that the Germans are going to shoot everyone. On the way back, they learn that the camp resistance organization had decided not to abandon the Jews and was going to prevent their being liquidated. The next day there is a roll call, and the head of Buchenwald announces that the camp is to be liquidated. Ten blocks of deportees would be evacuated each day, and no more food would be distributed.


On April 10, the remaining 0,000 prisoners are to be evacuated and the camp blown up. A siren alert occurs, however, and the evacuation is postponed to the next day. Nobody had eaten anything for six days. The next morning the resistance movement suddenly battles the SS in the assembly place. The SS flees, and resistance takes charge of the camp. At six in the evening, the first American tank arrives at Buchenwald.


The first thing the newly-freed prisoners thought of was food. Then, they thought of clothes and sex. Nobody thought of revenge. Three days after Buchenwald was liberated, Eliezer became deathly ill with food poisoning and spent two weeks in the hospital. After he got a little bit better, he gathered enough strength to look at himself in the mirror. He had not seen his reflection since living in the ghetto. When he looks at himself, he sees the eyes of a corpse, and that image has never left him.


Analysis


Though Eliezer feels relieved when his father dies, it is clear that this emotion is merely a momentary one that he later deeply regrets. For after his fathers death, Eliezers life in the concentration camp also ceases to really exist I have nothing to say of my life during this period. It no longer mattered. After my fathers death, nothing could touch me any more. The narrative ends rather abruptly after his father dies because to Eliezer, there is really no more story to tell. His story of life at Auschwitz and Buna has been one in which he and his father struggled together to survive, and after he dies, details become irrelevant.


In the last few pages of the novel, Wiesel leaves out some historical background that would make the narrative clearer. For example, he fails to explain what the camp resistance organization is, and he does not tell us exactly how close to defeat the Germans are. During this time Eliezer doesnt care about anything except feeding himself, and he probably isnt monitoring the war outside all that closely and just wants to get out of the concentration camp. The reader knows probably as much about the outside world during this time as the actual camp occupants do, and the omission of historical facts is therefore not all that important. The details of the liberation are not as important as the fact that the concentration camp survivors are finally able to escape the hellish world they have been living in.


Wiesel comments that none of the prisoners think of revenge when they are first freed. His tone in this passage suggests that he thinks that revenge should be sought, but in the very next paragraph, he describes how he became ill with food poisoning, and talk of revenge disappears from the narrative. However, the image that Wiesel concludes with implies that while revenge may be necessary, there is no way to reverse the damage that the Nazis inflicted on the Jewish people I wanted to see myself in the mirror hanging on the opposite wall. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me. The Nazis transformed Eliezer into a living corpse, a shadow of his former self, and surrounded him with constant death and misery. They killed his family, reduced him to base, animal instincts, and denied him his humanity. No matter what revenge Eliezer and the other prisoners may seek from the Nazis, there is no way that they can undo what has already been done.

Persons who may apply for amnesty


The Draft Exchange Control Amnesty and Amendment of Taxation Laws Bill (the Bill) does not grant a blanket amnesty to all taxpayers with undisclosed offshore funds. Section (1) of the Bill (00) limits the eligible applicants to natural persons who are resident in the Republic. Thus, companies, close corporations and offshore trusts are unable to apply for amnesty.

Section 11(1)(a) of the Bill states that a 5% penalty (based on the market value of offshore assets) will be imposed on foreign assets repatriated to South Africa. Section 11(1)(b) of the Bill levies a 10% penalty on disclosed foreign assets, which the taxpayer chooses to keep offshore. These penalties are not onerous and should not hinder the flow of these funds back to South Africa. As Cresswell (00) in his article ‘Owning up to offshore funds skips tax run-out’ argues a 10% penalty is a fair concession for many years of tax free growth earned.





Those that choose not to take up the amnesty and continue to hold undisclosed funds offshore in contravention of exchange control and tax legislation will face heavy penalties if found guilty. Thomas (0084) in his article ‘Wait for more details’ states that ‘penalties include fines of up to 00% of the tax evaded or two years’ imprisonment’. Thus, many experts are advising taxpayers to take this opportunity to become legal.


Secrecy and confidentiality


In Thomas’s article ‘Wait for more details’ (0084), he quotes KPMG’s executive director Danie Folscher as saying that


‘a fear for many and possibly the biggest deterrent, will be that of being permanently “orange-tagged” by SARS.’


The Bill does provide taxpayers with some reassurance. Section 1() of the Bill requires the amnesty unit to act as an independent body and s 1() guarantees that the secrecy provisions of s 4 of the Income Tax Act 58 of 16 will apply to all members of the amnesty unit.


Conclusion


Despite the reservations, this amnesty is beneficial to both taxpayers and the fiscus. It provides taxpayers, who illegally hold funds offshore, a relatively cost-effective method of legalising their affairs and provides the fiscus with an opportunity to increase revenue by broadening the tax base. This will finally bring South Africa into line with international tax practice.

A four-day riot had broken out between the Muslims and Hindus, thus stopping the food delivery. Sister Teresa left the convent to find food for her hundreds of students. She met some soldiers who gave her some bags of food and told her to stay off of the streets. But Teresa would soon experience another call from God.


On September 10, 146 Sister Teresa experienced a call with a call on an annual retreat. She was convinced that god wanted her to reach out to the poor. She believed that God told her to leave the convent and help the poor while living with them. She felt that this was an order from God and not to do this would mean to break the faith. In 147 Sister Teresa was given permission to leave the Loreto order of nuns. But Sister Teresa did not leave the convent until August 16, 148. She set out onto the streets of Calcutta, wearing a simple cotton sari decorated with a blue border. She had no idea that her organization would adopt this outfit as their habit. Leaving the Loreto Abbey was one of the greatest sacrifices she ever made. She was leaving behind her only friends and companions to go out into the slums of the cities.


Before she went to the slums she proceeded to learn medical skills from Mother Anna Dengel in Patina. There the Medical Missionary Sisters immediately took her with them where they went to the houses of sick and dying people and local hospitals. Sister Teresa learned to care for people by practicing with the sisters. She learned how to deliver babies, fix broken bones and became aware of many common diseases and illness. She was a natural at caring for people and within three months set out to help the poor of Calcutta.

There a group of nuns called the Little Sisters of the Poor gladly welcomed her. There were so many people to help that Sister Teresa didn’t know where to began. Sister Teresa stayed with the Little Sisters of the Poor until December 1, 148. She left and went out to the streets of Calcutta to start her mission from God. She left St. Joseph’s with a packed lunch, no money, materials or companions. She started a school in the slum that she could see outside her window while at the convent.


The first day of school five students showed up for class. Sister Teresa had no books, desks or chalkboards, but due to her determination she still managed to teach. The alphabet was the first lesson taught. The word spread through the slums and soon she had forty students. The student’s learned about language and numbers, but also about personal hygiene and cleanliness. Through her students Sister Teresa met many families of Calcutta and about the poor medical care. Many families had no income because the man of the house had been stricken with a disease. Thousands of people died each year due to lack of medical care. Poverty grew and Sister Teresa knew she had to do something more.


Sister Teresa didn’t have money, but she did have her attention and energy, which she gladly gave to the poor. She walked the streets looking for places to help. The work exhausted her, but she never gave up. Her love and compassion for God, people and her work helped her to help people that no one would go near. Each night she would be tempted to go back to the easy life at Loreto, but instead she prayed to God for this help to get through it all.


In March 14, Sister Teresa received a visitor at St. Joseph’s. The visitor was a student from Entally, who could not forget Sister Teresa’s kindness and generosity. She wanted to join Sister Teresa and work for the poor. Sister Teresa didn’t realize that this was the beginning of her order. Soon after Magdalena Gomes joined Sister Teresa. The three of them would go out into the streets each day, not knowing what to expect. By the end of the year eight more young girls joined to help the fight against poverty.


In 14 to demonstrate her dedication to Calcutta’s poor, Sister Teresa decided to become an Indian citizen. On October 7, 150 Cardinal Pietro Fumoson Biondi head of the office for the Propagation of the Faith, sanctioned Sister Teresa’s order, making her Mother Teresa.


Mother Teresa always encouraged her nuns to treat the poor as a gift from God and to treat the patients with respect, warmth and kindness. The middle of 15 the Missionaries of Charities moved to a new residence that was big enough to house the growing number of nuns. The nuns wanted to call Mother Teresa the Reverend Mother Teresa, but she refused because she never felt above anyone else.


In 154 Mother Teresa was given an unused building for the dying. The building was transformed into the Place of the Immaculate Heart. Each morning Mother Teresa and the nuns would walk the streets for dying people and bring them to the building. They were treated as angels, and were loved and cared for until their death. The sisters opened up a rehabilitation clinic for lepers. In 160 groups were formed by the Missionaries of Charity to travel to different parts of India. Homes were set up in many parts of India and by 16 there were 11 members of the Missionaries of Charity. Due to the many contributions thirty centers were opened outside of Calcutta.

She left the United States and traveled to England, Germany and Rome. The trip gave Mother Teresa many new ideas. So on March 5, 16, twelve men went to live at the Home of the Immaculate Heart to study for their missionary work. Brother Andrew who later was called General Servant headed these men. Mother Teresa brought them a small home for their headquarters. The brothers went into areas of Calcutta that the sisters could not and ran the men’s ward at the Home for the Dying. In no time the brothers grew and there were forty-four houses around the world.


In February of 165, the Missionaries of Charity had gained permission to work outside of India by the Pope. This meant that Mother Teresa and the sisters could help the poor all over the world. The first home was in Cocorote Venezuela. There Mother Teresa started her work. She was determined to help the women and children. There was a shortage of food, clothing and medical care. In this area men would take more than one wife and then couldn’t support them. Mother Teresa’s goal was to educate the women so they could support themselves and their children. In 17 Mother Teresa was given the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. In future years Mother Teresa would build many more houses for the poor and needy. She never turned down an opportunity to work with poor. She received many awards in the course of her mission. On December , 17 Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize and a check for $10,000.00. She received the prize for her outstanding work with the poor and overall love for people. Three months later, she was presented with India’s greatest award, the Bharat Tatnu for the Jewel of India. In 185 President Reagan awarded Mother Teresa with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On September 5, 17 the world learned that Mother Teresa was given back to God. Her body was buried on Saturday, September 1, 17, but her spirit was still alive.
