Turners Thesis and Deglers Interpretation

In 18, Frederick Jackson Turner presented a thesis that would challenge the widespread accepted view that the east, particularly New England was the true bearer of American culture. He attempted to explain this by theorizing that American advances on the westward frontier can be viewed as a major factor in explaining American development throughout the nineteenth century. He believed that historians who examined the importance of these urban centers as cultural beacons would discover that it was indeed the populace on the American frontier that had the largest effect on American society. This, he said, was due to the fact that while living on the frontier, one is returned to a primitive state of nature, one in which they are free to evolve socially and thus create a certain American Identity. Each time Americans expanded westward, they continued to shed more and more aspects of European society. The expansion also produced feelings of nationalism, independence and democracy. This was mainly due to the fact that in these isolated communities, Americans were more inclined to make use of American land, and American products, than to make use of European goods. This European Isolation also brought an end to the traditional hereditary privileges that were still common in new England and Europe at the time. It was also stated that the vast amount of free land in the west contributed to an increasingly democratic spirit within the region. While this thesis has proven to be a rather viable explanation for the evolution of American ideals, many argue that its vague nature includes little research and much imprecision.

While Turner may have presented this argument that attributed the positive and unifying development of American identity to westward expansion, Degler does not agree that American migration in the nineteenth century had such constructive effects on the American psyche. He asserts that it was indeed this very westward expansion due to a belief in Manifest Destiny that sharpened the rift between northern and southern interests and increased the conflict between the two regions in which the debate over slavery would ultimately lead to secession and civil war. There were many other problems with this expansion that were not solely political. For instance, the fact that the United States amassed an area greater than that of most European countries led to many communication problems throughout the country, and much of Europe speculated that no country so large could possibly remain united. Economic difficulties arose, as surplus goods would only have local, limited markets. This hindered industrial growth within the region. It was not until numerous canals were constructed and alternate forms of transportation and communicator were invented that the wests full potential was reached. These inventions included the railroad and steamboat. Degler criticizes Turner for not including numerous specific observations that may have allowed for a more accurate interpretation of the theory. He refuted Turners argument that the isolation of the frontier provides for a social rebirth by stating that Turner underestimated the conservative nature of cultural patterns. He also refutes this theory by providing physical evidence that the men of the frontier wore the same clothes, and had the same attitude, objects, pleasures and language of their New England and European counterparts. On the subject of democratic influence within the frontier, Degler states that the influence of the frontier lay in providing opportunity for democratic ideals to be put into practice regardless of their origin. The abundance of land in the region led many land- owners to participate in government, a practice which merely brought about self-confidence and self-reliance. Thus the many criticisms of Turners thesis are based on the presupposition that the frontier influence is passive rather than active. Based on these arguments, Degler disagrees with Turners explanation of the evolution of American identity.

Trying to access my strengths and weaknesses is going to be a difficult task. The better a person knows himself or herself, the more exactly they can assess the areas that require additional personal development such as determining their strengths and weaknesses. To paint a true picture of where I am and where I want to be, I will have to be totally honest. There are certain areas of my personality and life that I will have to improve to reach my goals.

In order to decide my strengths I will have to first determine the areas that I am most competent and comfortable. I consider myself to be a well-organized individual. I start my day off at the office by reviewing my previous days productions. This allows me the opportunity to prioritize what needs to be completed by the close of the business day. I try to tackle projects in both my personal and business life in such a manner that they can be completed with efficiency. This saves me time and allows me to accomplish more.

I also feel that I have good people skills. I come into contact with many individuals that require my undivided attention (clients, customer service representatives, and co-workers) on a daily basis. Many of the situations I handle are over the telephone with angry managers who call me all the time with production issues. My people skills allow

me to handle any situation in a professional manner. This is valuable when employed in a customer service related field such as mine.

Also, I consider myself a team player. I often provide assistance to fellow employees when they are in a crunch. I do not feel that management appreciates me, for always lending a hand but that does not stop me form lending a helping hand when needed. I try to bring enthusiasm to all I do and I always have the best interest of the company at heart. Teaching others has always been a strong suit of mine-especially when it comes to training. I feel satisfied knowing that I am able to make others comprehend something that they felt was foreign. I enjoy educating people on the job; it provides me with a sense of achievement.

Finally, I feel that I have a self-discipline quality. Believe me, when I am dealing with 50 different personalities who are repeatedly frustrated and taking it out on you, it takes a certain level of restraint not to lose you composure. This trait is also applicable in my personal life where I do not make frivolous purchases in order to afford better material items for my family.

On the negative side of the table, I do have a tendency to procrastinate. Not so much in my professional life, where I cannot afford to lose my job, but more so in my personal life. Because I gain more time from being organized in general, I find that I squander away a lot of time-causing me to wait until the last minute to begin a project. My family ironing project is a good example of where I procrastinate. The home environment is just

full of distractions such as televisions. There is always a reason to watch a little more television, play with the family, play video games, etc.

Another negative trait would be that I strive to be a perfectionist. When I do things I do them in a certain methodical way and I am not satisfied until they are just right in my eyes. When working on group projects, I get annoyed when I do not perform to the standards of others. I expect to put forth the same level of effort that they do and find myself losing patience when I don't seem to have the dedication as others.

I have decided to use most of my free time to get more schoolwork completed. In other words-no more goofing off until I at least accomplish something due during the week. Afterwards, I will reward myself with something recreational.

I will also try to be more dedicated as a team member, especially at work and at school. I will try to share my ideas with greater enthusiasm. Instead of being critical of myself, I will try to be constructive and I hope to achieve results in the same manner.

It will not be an easy task, but I will monitor my own behavior as I travel the road of self-improvement. The results will help me to better myself as an individual and as a mother. These are my strengths and weaknesses.

Jazz and education are not as unrelated as one might think. Although they seem different on the surface, the very things that make up jazz and education are one and the same. Education exemplifies the elements of the jazz model. Obviously the community exists in and of the classroom, with the students and the teacher creating the energy, and they themselves embodying the other elements of jazz.

The most common place for education to take place is in the classroom. The fact that a community that exists between the teacher and the individual students is blatant to anyone who is able to observe the relationships that form during a class. During any normal class period, the students are almost guaranteed to interact amongst themselves, and are of course forced to interact on at least a minimal level with the teacher of the class. This interaction on an individual and group level forms a sense of community in the class room, and as with living communities, each class is different depending on the type of people in the class and their personalities, as well as the personality of the teacher.

The energy possessed by an educator is very important to the learning process, just as the energy created in jazz music is important to how the music is taken as an art form. For example, if a teacher stalks into the classroom with a scowl on their face and yells at the students, it is obviously not as conductive to learning as if the teacher had walked into class and started making jokes to catch the student's attention. This parallels jazz in that jazz must possess a good driving energy in order to be taken well and be pleasant to listen to.

Communication is also essential to having a successful educational experience. In jazz, the musicians and dancers must be able to communicate with each other in order to perform well. As far as education goes, it is essential that a teacher have good communication with their students to ensure that the ideas behind their lessons are passed on clearly and efficiently. Just as the fact that any good jazz combo would quickly fall apart without the ability to communicate, the lessons of a teacher unable to communicate with their students would be pointless.

Educators would be totally unsuccessful in communicating unless they knew what they were talking about. Being a successful teacher requires that the teacher be well versed in the subjects in which they are teaching. The technique of their teachings has great influence over how much is learned in their class, just as the technique of a jazz musician affects how the music is played and heard. Both must be talented and well educated in what they do to have the best effect.

This ability, knowledge, and technique must be passed along to students through the individual teaching style of an educator just as each jazz piece is played different, however subtly, by each jazz musician. How well students learn in a class can very well depend on how interesting a teacher makes a class. The ability to engage students is contingent on a teacher's ability to come up with their own creative ways to portray the lesson in a unique and interesting manner. Listening to the same music time and time again gets dull, but different music played with different styles is always interesting. This is why creativity is important to the teaching process.

Of course, in any realistic classroom situation, there will always be students who excel in saying things that are inappropriate for class or things that are said at inappropriate times. Thus, a good teacher must be able to handle events that happen unexpectedly with fluidity so as to not interrupt the lesson. This improvisation takes other forms as well. A teacher must also be able to use improvisation in the sense that they need to be able to change the lesson plan of the class in order to work around unforeseen events that delay the learning process, such as if a teacher were to be unable to teach for a short amount of time and a substitute must take over, which inevitably slows the learning process.

As is clearly outlined above, teaching wholly encompasses the elements of the jazz model. I believe that they are so closely related that the jazz model could be called the education model without making any significant changes. Jazz is simply so new that it is easy to make the connections and have those connections seem like original ideas, when they have in reality probably existed since the dawn of time. Without the education model, jazz would not be the beautiful art form that it is today, and without the jazz model, education would lack the ability to truly instruct students in their coursework.

With the development of technology, that the affects of technology are not always positive is generally accepted by public. Technology itself is a two-edged weapon, so it is impossible to hope that technology will only do good to human society and social development. Instead mankind should try to reduce the negative effects of technology.

Admittedly, modern technologies which are intended to improve humans life initially do produce some new problems that never emerge before the industrial revolution, which in a sense threatens the quality of life. For example, new environmental stress, such as acid rain and greenhouse effect, which is more and more serious with the progress in the industrial production. People are enjoying the comfort and luxury brought by new technology without realizing that they are deprived the necessities of life blue sky, green trees, lean rivers, etc. Another example is automatism of industrial production, which do effect great improvement in the production quality and the safe of certain dangerous production tasks, but it has reduce employment by substituting human production of all kinds with the work of machine guided by compute, which leading to a serious result that Significant number of workers are disappointed to find them lack the essential skills in this high technological society to help themselves find another job.

However, that technology plays an important role in improving the quality of life is undeniable .New technology has such significant influence in every field of daily life that many people believe strongly that it has not only brought a revolutionary change in way of life but almost reshaped traditional code of though. Thanks to technology peoples horizon is increasingly widened which enable them to study some areas that they never know before. Nearly every step in technology brings relative progress in mankinds view of the world. The invention of electron microscope markedly improved the microcosmic world research while the satellite and space ship increase mens sight towards the vast universe to a height they have never got. What¡¯s more, people are cheerful to find that with the help of technology it becomes much easier to get knowledge. For instance, people are used to turning to internet for help first no matter what they desire to know and all they have to do is to log on to the internet and use search engines to locate the information they are looking for. Thus people rarely find themselves lacking information with the internet which transmit information around the world at speeds never before imagined.

It is mankind who will determine at last whether technology will play a positive or negative role in social life. Technologies come into use for the simple reason that people believe that they can serve people in some aspects, but with their gradual development people may find there are some flaws that go against the initial goals, then what people should do? The attitude that technology should be negated is unrealistic thus unacceptable. Some inspiration may be got from the traditional example, nuclear technology, which came into research at first in order to produce nuclear weapon, a notorious bomb under world peace. Though the world is still under the danger of nuclear war most people are still optimistic about this technology because of its use in nuclear-power plant in many countries which provide large quantities of electricity.

INTRODUCTION

Simple distillation is a process to purify volatile compounds or compounds with different boiling points. It is a simple process that takes a mixture of compounds and applies heat. The substance with the lowest boiling point, (usually the most volatile), will boil and vaporize first. Using a distillation apparatus consisting of a flask, glass tubes, thermometer, condensing tube and distillate container, the first gaseous vapor that rises can be condensed back into liquid. This liquid is directed into a separate container and is called the distillate. When the first boiling point is reached the vapors rise. The vapors that hit the upper side of the flask and thermometer will condense and fall back down to again re-vaporize. The vapors that reach the upper side arm will enter a water-cooled condensing tube where it will condense to liquid form and fall in to a separate distillate container. In Simple Distillation the distillate will contain a higher percentage of the more volatile compound but will not be pure. If the partial pressures are calculated and then divided by the total pressure the best separation percentage can be calculated. Generally Simple Distillation is only used to separate compounds that have boiling points that differ by at least 80 degrees Celsius.

In this Distillation experiment, Cyclohexane is distilled from an equal mixture of Cyclohexane/Toluene.

THEORY

Cheap Custom Essays on Simple Distillation

Raoult's Law The vapor pressure of a compound in a mixture is equal to the product of the vapor pressure of the pure substance and the mole fraction of the substance in the mixture.

Dalton's Law The mole fraction of a substance in the vapor at a given temperature is equal to the partial pressure of the substance at that temperature divided by the total pressure.

RESULTS / DATA

A mixture of 0 mL Cyclohexane and 0 mL Toluene is added to a flask that contains a boiling chip. The flask is attached to a Simple Distillation apparatus and heat is applied to the flask. The volume of the distillate and the temperature are recorded as the distillate is formed.

40 mL 101.0

45 mL 105.0

50 mL 107.5

DISCUSSION

At roughly the boiling point for Cyclohexane the distillate started to form. As the temperature increased the distillate still formed at a steady rate. The rate of flow continued until the temperature neared the boiling point for the second substance, Toluene. At this point the rate of flow slowed down. On a graph of Temperature vs. Distillate Volume, it is easy to see that there is not a constant boiling point indicating a lack of purity. A pure substance will have a constant boiling point. To get a greater percentage of Cyclohexane the distillation process can be repeated.

Some Points to consider

Calibration of thermometer Accurate data is achieved with instruments that are accurate and functioning properly. In this experiment we did not calibrate the thermometer. This could be a source of error.

Boiling points of mixtures - Boiling points are a function of atmospheric pressure. The boiling points of most liquids decrease by 0.5° C for every 10 mm Hg decrease in atmospheric pressure.

CONCLUSION

Using the technique of Simple Distillation and starting with equal amounts of Cyclohexane and Toluene. The distillate formed had a higher percentage of Cyclohexane but was not pure. The lack of a constant boiling point indicated that the substance was not pure.

Hip Hop Stop

It might be "hip" and even make you "hop", but as innocent as it may appear this hip music has hopped and entire generation into a world of drugs, sex and gang violence.

Hip-hop or rap, is not only a genre of music, it is a language and a challenging lifestyle. From the distinct beats, the clothing and the seemingly aggressive use of language, it is almost undeniable that hip-hop influences its listener. The problem is that hip hop projects a certain image which can be very damaging to the listeners' perspective. It is even a greater problem since the main listeners are children and teens between the ages of 1 and 18. This music directly influences how they identify with each other in terms of sex roles in society, creating violence among them and promoting the use of drugs. When children listen to this kind of music, they think that what they are hearing is not wrong or against the law. The lyrics in many songs contain violent and explicit lyrics that usually talk about killing someone. It is also music that refers to women as bitches, whores and sluts. Unfortunately, parents have no control over what music their kids listen to since there is no age limit on purchasing such music. It is also unfortunate to see that the media promotes it all as fun and games and society easily embraces it.

Hip hop music is definitely not the only source of violence, yet it is a very potent one. Not only is the music violent but the rappers lifestyle is also. A perfect example of such lifestyle is rapper Tupac Shakur who was murdered in 16 due to hard core gang fights. Highlights of Shakur's police records show that he was arrested for aggravated assault, charged with shooting two off duty police officers in Atlanta, but the charges were later dropped. He was also accused of beating a limousine driver in Los Angeles and threatening a fellow rapper with a bat in Michigan. To top off his record he was later found guilty of sexual abuse in 14 and was serving time up to 4 ½ years in prison (Sims 84). Shakur lived the life tattooed on his stomach, Thug Life, and died living it.

My concern with artists like Shakur is that this generation looks up to him as a role model. Is that what we want in our society today? Little shakurs walking around town creating violence and abuse. When musicians conduct themselves in such a poor manner, they influence children to copy their actions. The lyrics of music are all an important influence on children. Warning labels have been placed on albums with provocative lyrics, but these warnings do little to prevent the lyrics from reaching the children. Chairmen, executives and the media claim that music is not the cause to society's problems (MTV). I strongly agree, yet I also believe that it does a marvelous job in promoting and magnifying society's ills when delivering it to kids at home.

Hip hop has also been criticized for its graphic sexual content. When confronted with the question as to why they refer to women as bitches and whores, their responses were quite similar. Snoop Doggy Dog, another controversial rapper along the lines of Tupac Shakur answered that what they say are only for women that are like that and if you're a real woman, you are classy and elegant. He also said that he chooses to call them hoes and sluts because all the women he knows are like that (Farley 78). Sadly, this is the view shared by all these hip hop artists. Do these artists think they own women and can treat them anyway they want to? If so, what paths will the children listening to such artists who accept their behavior as normal follow? In my opinion, they will follow a path of destruction leading to a corrupted society.

Hip hop has changed for worse by taking the art form and transforming it into trash. Of course there are positive messages in hip hop, but if the entire album is about death, violence, sex and drugs, what kind of message is going to be placed first? Parents might have control within their four walls yet even then they cannot supervise every single moment of their entertainment. Many TV and radio stations do not allow this form of music on the air. It has literally been censored out of their programming the same way porno films have. Even though many stations have censored explicit hip hop, some still promote it heavily. Violence, sex, and drugs are a reality in today's world, but should it be exposed and shared as if it is ok and make it sound like fun and games. We must draw the line and ban this form of music to enter our homes and lives. Hip Hop - Stop!

Raising a child with Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a medical condition caused by a permanent brain injury that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. About 1 in every 500 babies are affected. The effect of Cerebral Palsy, or CP, is characterized by lack of muscle control and body movement. While it is not a progressive disease of the brain, the effects of CP may change gradually over the years. CP can occur due to a variety of causes including an illness, prematurity, or difficult delivery. Many of the causes still remain a mystery. CP affects childrens muscle tone in a variety of ways. Cerebral palsy can range from mild to severe depending on the location and size of the injury. It does not necessarily mean that all limbs will be impacted. Cerebral palsy cannot be cured but medicines and sometimes surgery may be recommended to treat specific problems such as muscle spasms. Another finding in the study was that twins who survived a fetal death of their co-twin were 108 times more likely to have CP than single children and 1 times more likely than twins whose co-twin survived. Three out of four of theses children were from identical twin sets and were normal or nearly normal in birth weight. The risk of CP was similar in twins of like gender or unlike gender pairings.

Often, parents of a child with cerebral palsy must provide lifelong care plus ongoing medical care.

Providing this care is expensive. Parents, understandably, want to know if a medical mistake caused their childs condition, and whether they can receive financial and other help in dealing with the challenges of raising a disabled child. The most important people in any childs life are, of course, the parents. Children require time, patience, love, dedication, and many other things. Raising a child with Cerebral palsy requires more of these qualities. The emotional burdens brought about by raising a child with developmental, mental, or physical disabilities pose challenges to those raising the child. When a parent first learns that their child has a disability, it is said that they will go through a process of grieving. This process is often described as similar to mourning a death, or going through a divorce. Five different stages of feelings that all parents of children of cerebral palsy will endure have been identified. These are shock, grief, denial, anger, and acceptance. This feeling model is not universal, as people will deal with things in their own way. However, most will feel some degree of each, and professional therapy may be needed. There is no universal parents guide to raising a child with CP. Each must find their own way. Nothing in life really prepares anyone for being disabled and when it is your baby or child who is suddenly the recipient of this label, life may suddenly seem very unfair. People do not ask for this, and there is very little they can do to change it. Their sense of control over their lives and the life of their child is at risk. Relationships with other family members, especially the spouse if there is one, can be under great stress and it may be all they can do to hold themselves together. It is okay to be angry and to do their best to channel their anger into getting the best services they can for their child.

Help with essay on School

A person with cerebral palsy also has to cope with disabilities and handicaps. A disability is a physical loss of function such as being unable to walk, having difficulty with hand control or speech. A handicap is the degree to which that disability puts you at a disadvantage in daily life. For instance, someone who is very short-sighted may be considered to have a disability, but he/she is unlikely to consider this a handicap if he/she has corrective lenses. A disability may prevent someone with CP from climbing stairs, but this will only be a handicap if the building he/she wants to enter is not wheelchair accessible. It is very hurtful to have someone pat you on the head if you are sitting in a wheelchair, or to walk away because they cannot understand what you are trying to say to them. Prejudice and teasing can be very damaging. A good sense of self-esteem is required to cope with these negative attitudes. Children can also be handicapped if they are over-protected and become too dependent. People with disabilities are people first and should never be described by negative labels like wheelchair-bound, spastic, or afflicted with cerebral palsy. All people share similar needs, desires, and responsibilities. It seems that some people think just because somebody has Cerebral Palsy, they must be stupid. Current Business Research Project

The Census Bureau "The Census Bureau provides statistical information about the economy and the society. In the past the Federal Statistical System has gathered this information every ten years. The plan now is to activate The Census Bureau annually. The Census Bureau also plans to develop official measures of electronic business activity, and to evaluate how e-business affects existing measures of economic activity." The recently released projections of the population of the United States is from 1 100. The results have included age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, and nativity.

The business problems under investigation are getting an accurate read on the population by asking the correct questions, and receiving accurate answers, also the cooperation of the population is essential. While living in New York City, I was a census taker one year, and the experience was revealing. The citizens of New York City were reluctant to answer questions. They stated that it was no ones business how many people lived in their homes. They refused to reveal their occupations, and declined to answer other pertinent questions. They did not welcome us to their neighborhoods, and the bystanders on the street intimidated us. At that time taking the census, and reporting the findings were inaccurate. The Internal Revenue Service probably has a more accurate account of the statistics that the Census Bureau would need for a complete periodic official count of the population. Some people have reported themselves on the census, but neglected to report deaths. There are many documents missing that are needed to keep accurate accounts of the population. Responses such as "other race" are in a separate category, so the estimates are inaccurate.

The method of projecting the population consists of variables such as age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin. The birth rate and the death rate are also factors. The age group 85 years and older are calculated in a different manner due to inaccuracies." There is a mathematical model developed by Coale and Kisker to obtain death rates of 1.0 for both males and females at age 115 for all race and

Hispanic origin groups." Other variables to consider are migration to the United States by race and Hispanic origin. There are also the Emigration of Legal United States Residents, and Foreign- Born Emigration. The projected fertility rates, and life expectancy at birth by race and Hispanic Origin. It is difficult to estimate the declining race and Hispanic origin mortality differentials. The definitions of race and origin are ever changing, and increasing rates of intermarriage may serve to reduce differentials in the future.

"The methodology and assumptions are used to develop the recently released projections of the population of the United States from 1 to 100. The new series includes projections of the population by single year of age, sex, race, Hispanic Origin, and nativity. The extension of the series to 100 carries the projections 0 years further into the future than any series previously issued by the Census Bureau. Projecting the human population continues to be an evolving science, and future developments will provide the basis to revise these assumptions in future years".

The Census Bureau provides statistical information about the economy and the society. This task cannot be easy with an ever-changing society. This is pertinent information and as time and resources will allow the system should be enhanced with new technology. The numerous errors in the past are due to human error. There will always be people who embellish the truth, and people who refuse to cooperate, but a good estimate should suffice. There are citizens who fail to realize that the census has a great deal to do with where schools, housing, jobs, parks and other activities are located. Some people fail to realize the duty of the United States Census idyllically they might be more cooperative.

The Census that arrives in the mail may persuade people to be more cooperative. It could be that people would be more forthcoming if no one intruded in their space. This is not full proof, but it could provide accuracy and lead to better cooperation. I am not sure if all of the information is reaching the public, but it would go a long way towards getting people to cooperate.

Final Essay.

Should there be separate schools for males & females?

There should not be separate schools for males and females. There are three main reasons why there should not be separate schools for male and female students. First, the students passing out from mixed schools are much more amenable and readily acceptable to the today's society than the students passing out from single-sex schools. Second, it is much more economical to construct and manage mixed schools than to construct and manage single-sex schools. Third, quality and amount of subject knowledge of students passing out from a single-sex schools are less than the quality and amount of knowledge of students passing out from mixed schools, due to lack of overall competition among students in single-sex schools. For the reasons stated above, there should not be separate schools for males and females.

There should not be separate schools for males and females in today's society because of the students passing out from mixed schools are much more amenable and readily acceptable to the society than the students passing out from single-sex schools. The final goal of an each individual is to serve the society at his best and live a peaceful life. In today's complex-society everybody hates any discrimination, what so ever. In today's offices, it is common to have employees in both sexes. Employees who have got their education in mixed schools will easily get familiarized with the work place environment. Quality of people skill is an important factor in today's recruitment criterion. It is clearly seen that the quality of people skills in students from mixed schools is stronger than the quality of people skills in students from single-sex schools.

Cheap Custom Essays on Should there be separate schools for males & females?

Second, there should not be separate schools for males and females, because it is much more economical to construct and manage mixed schools than to construct and manage single-sex schools. A localized community can have one mixed school instead of two single-sex schools. There is a significant difference between the cost of construction & management of two single-sex schools and the cost of construction & management of mixed schools. The construction and management cost of a school is highly depended on the cost involved with overheads, common facilities and infrastructure. It is clear that the cost involved in construction & management of a mixed school is less than the cost involved in construction and management of a single-sex school. The Government can easily divert this money for other projects in education in mixed schools instead. Because of this economical reason there should not be separate schools for males and females.

Third, there should not be separate schools for males and females, because of the lack of subject knowledge seen among the students form single-sex schools due to inadequate competition amoung children. The student who scores full marks in any subject feels that he is the best for that subject if he finds no competition for that subject among the other students in the class. It is very difficult to find employment in modern-fast-paced society. Unemployment rate is gradually increasing in every where in the world. One should have an excellent knowledge about his major subject to find the job he likes. School is the first place is to learn the competition. In single-sex schools the competition is virtually eliminated by 50%. Because of this reason the final product of a single-sex schools enters the society with inadequate subject knowledge.

Therefore, there should not be separate schools for males and females. The acceptance of the society and the quality of subject knowledge of the students passing out from mixed schools are very high. On the other hand the cost involved in construction and maintenance of single sex schools are very high. That is why there should not be separate schools for males and females. There are so many categories of discriminations in the world. People hate any kind of discrimination; whether it is sex, race, religion and status in the society. Therefore, there should not be any kind of discrimination in the type of education too.

The Great Gatsby The Dream

Jay Gatsby, the central character of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby symbolizes the American

dream. The American dream offers faith in the possibility of a better life. Its attendant illusion is the

belief that material wealth alone can bring that dream to fruition. Through Gatsby, Fitzgerald brings

Do my essay on Gatsby and the Dream CHEAP !

together both these ideas. Jay Gatsby thinks money is the answer to anything he encounters. He has the

best of everything. The fanciest car, the largest house, and the finest clothes. Jay has everything except

the object he most desires, Daisy. Gatsby believes he can win Daisy over with wealth, that he could

achieve the ideal she stood for through his material possessions.

One look at Gatsby's past and it could be seen that he was destined to get ahead in life. Mr. Gatz

told Nick, "Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do

you notice what he's got about improving his mind? He was always great for that. He told me I et like a

hog once and I beat him for it" (18). Gatsby's determination to gain a large bankroll is a huge part of

the American dream. He believes that once he achieved his financial goal it would lead to a better life.

In America the car is one of the greatest status symbols. Gatsby's gorgeous machine is one of the

most majestic cars created. Nick's comments on the vehicle describe its luster, "...and there in its

monstrous length with triumphant hatboxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes...Sitting down behind

many layers of glass in a sort of leather conservatory we started towards town" (68). The use of the

symbolic automobile can be seen as a demonstration of how an ideal based on materialism alone can be

destructive. This was the fatal car which kills Myrtle Wilson and indirectly leads to Gatsby's death.

Appearance is another important factor toward Gatsby's dream. In his quest to win Daisy's heart

Gatsby chooses to wear his best outfit. "...the front door opened nervously and Gatsby in a white

flannel suit, silver shirt and gold colored tie hurried in" (8). Silver and gold are the colors of wealth,

Gatsby's sartorial splendor is as lavish as any of the other items he owns. Gatsby's shirts are more

then just garments towards Gatsby. They are some of the many fascinating objects he possesses that

were created by money. These shirts contribute towards Gatsby's vision of the American dream, that

his money and belongings will create happiness for him.

Another major object of Gatsby's dream was his incredible house. Jay states to Nick and Daisy,

"My house looks well, doesn't it? See how the whole front of it catches the light" (5). Jay gave Nick

and Daisy the grand tour of his house showing of all of his worldly possessions. Room after room,

everything was shown and mentioned. At the sight of his piles and piles of shirts Daisy broke down.

"They're such beautiful shirts, it makes me sad because I've never seen such--such beautiful shirts

before" (8). Jay Gatsby's ideals were parallel to the typical American dream. He wants to claim his

objective by the use of his assets. He thinks that his money will give him happiness in life through love

and his personal belongings.

Even the richest man in the world can't have everything. Material wealth could provide many things

for Jay Gatsby but not the thing he most desired. Although his wealth drew Daisy closer to him, he

never truly could have possessed her heart. He demanded Daisy to state that she had never loved Tom

Buchanan. "Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby, "I love you now--isn't that enough? I can't

help what's past. I did love him once--but I loved you too." (1-140). Jay's true love still remained

with her uncaring husband, Tom. Jay Gatsby's dream was smashed when he found out that even all of

his assets weren't enough to woo Daisy to him.

Jay Gatsby's belief in the American dream keep him from realizing reality. He believes that if he

worked hard enough and made enough money that he could have anything. He wants to perceive the

world as a place where sufficient wealth would enable him to recapture and recreate the past he desired

with Daisy. Gatsby began planning for his dream when he was young. This can be seen from his journal

he wrote as a young man which was discovered by Mr. Gatz. His attempt to accomplish his dream with

cars and shirts could not have been successful. The American dream cannot be accomplished, money is

just one factor towards happiness in this world.

Kellogg's strategy was to produce a web site provided specific product line and brand information to interested consumers. The page displays particular product descriptions, nutrition information, and recipes. Provided as well are company contacts allowing direct consumer response. Corporation facts and financial statements are also available. The overall goal of these sites are to reinforce the brand images portrayed by the companies' other advertisements, such as, television commercials, radio spots and print advertisement. Kellogg's does this by posting additional information about its products. New products are promoted in this site to entice those familiar with the Kellogg's name into trying new line extensions. Parents, those with illnesses or allergies, and exercise enthusiasts will find nutritional information about their favorite products. The site is easy to navigate through and does not bombard the consumer with overwhelming amounts of information in a cluttered manner. The site is concise and allows the company's messages to be readily absorbed. General Mills produced a web site that has an abundance of company information and hyperlinks to individual product and service pages. Its many product categories, line extensions and brand names allow the company to post diverse information in accordance with the different product positions. It also uses this web site to promote new products. The General Mills web site itself only posts company information, line extensions, news, and online shopping opportunities. The sight's links give access to a variety of information. Parents have the option to explore the Cheerios parent page and educators might be interested in the Box Tops for education program General Mills sponsors. Health conscious consumers would be attracted to Cheerios heart healthy news and kids may check out the you rule your school page. The information provided by this site is varying and a dispersed widely over many different web pages. This may be problematic for consumers who are not too familiar with surfing the net. Its broad layout may lead to confusion in finding or difficulty in discovering specific product information. Post Cereal's web site displays health related question and answer forums, product line information, recipes and snack ideas for their cereals. Those looking for new and alternative uses for pre-existing brands. Parents and house-wives may be those specifically targeted. It also attempts to enhance the image of the Post brand overall by providing historical information. This is in an attempt to distinguish the company as on that has established itself and also provides quality products. Those who produced this page may not have taken into consideration the possibility that loyal Post Purchasers may not know that Kraft is Post's parent company and must go through Kraft's web sight to access Post's page. Breakfast cereal is a product that requires little involvement on behalf of the consumer. The customer knows likes and needs and bases his purchasing decisions of them. One consumer may like cereals with a lot of sugar while others may look for those high in fiber. Once a consumer finds a cereal that he/she likes they tend habitually purchase it. Most cereal purchasers have a select few cereals they are partial to and routinely buy them. (Speaking from personal experience) The Web can be used to establish familiarity and allow consumers access to updated product information. Those navigating these product sites are most likely loyal brand buyers and are in search for more information. They are more willing and open to the messages and advertisements displayed by the manufacturers. Loyal customers also are exposed to the company's Web address because it is generally printed on the product labels. This almost forces the habitual buyer to memorize it. The enormity of the Web may lead consumers to become lost or may make finding the site itself difficult. Also not all buyers have access to computers or may be computer illiterate. The Web is a useful tool for keeping old consumers loyal and up to date in regards to their favorite brands. Web pages provide a cost effective means to distribute additional product information. Consumers go to the web site seeking the company's message. It offers a means of direct consumer feedback by encouraging buyers to e-mail their opinion of the brands. It can also be used as a research tool by counting the number of hits there are for a particular products web page. This recording my reflect consumer interest in the product. Web masters may find difficulty in making accessibility and navigation simple enough for all users. Exactly what message and information should be posted and consumer awareness of the web site itself may also prove to be obstacles to be overcome by sight producers.

Originally, I had picked the country of Algeria because the flag really stood out and made me think of what the symbols and colors of the flag might mean. Due to no information on the website that we did our research on, the country did not fall into the Middle East region. Since I liked the flag of Turkey with its moon-star symbol and bright orange color, I decided to learn more about it.

Turkey is known to have a Republican Parliamentary Democracy. The head of government is the prime minister, who represents the majority party or coalition in parliament. The president, as chief of state, is chosen by parliament for a seven-year term. All citizens over age 0 are entitled to vote. The official language of Turkey is Turkish. In addition, about 10 percent of the population speaks a different primary language, usually Kurdish or Arabic. Islam ceased to be the official state religion of Turkey in 18. Nevertheless, percent of the population is Muslimabout four-fifths of whom are Sunnites, and the remainder mostly Shiites found in the southeast. Christians account for less than 0. percent of the population. The Jewish community numbers about 0,000. Turkey is made up of mostly mountains; narrow costal plain; high central plateau (Anatolia). Farming here is restricted to less than one-fifth of the total area. The central Anatolian Plateau, the largest geographic region in Turkey, is surrounded on all sides by mountains. Turkey experiences long, hot summers and mild, rainy winters. In addition to good supplies of coal and iron ore, Turkey has a number of small but important mineral deposits, such as chromium near Guleman and Fethiye, high-grade magnetite at Divrigi, and lead and zinc in scattered areas. Boron, copper, and silver are also found, and petroleum occurs in the southeast. Turkey also has natural hazards that include severe earthquakes, especially in Northern Turkey, along an arc extending from the sea of Marmara to Lake Van. Turkey has a population of about 5,640,14. Out of this population a total of 85% can read and write. The birth rate is 18.1 births per 1,000 population and the death rate is 5.5 deaths per 1,000 population. People don't really get to live to be that old. The average life expectancy for a male is 68.8 years and for a female, 7.71 years. The culture of Turkey differs from ours. A transition from Islamic artistic traditions under the Ottoman Empire to a more secular, Western orientation has taken place in Turkey. Turkish painters today are striving to find their own art forms free from Western influence. Sculpture is less developed, and public-monuments are usually heroic representations of Atatürk and events from the war of independence. Folk music is a source of inspiration for longer symphonic works. Literature is considered the most advanced of contemporary Turkish arts. Many critics regard Kemal Tahir as the greatest modern Turkish novelist. Among authors translated into English is Yasar Kemal, author of Memed, My Hawk , a prizewinning novel of a modern Robin Hood, which won the author his international reputation; Anatolian Tales; and Seagull, a story that blends myth with realistic depiction of provincial life in modern Turkey. Turkey maintains state operas in Istanbul and Ankara, the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul, three music conservatories, a national folk dance troupe, and other cultural institutions. Christian churches converted to mosques, and mosques built by the famous 16th-century Turkish architect Sinan, are in Istanbul, Edirne, Bursa, and other cities. The Sultan's Palace is now a museum housing the imperial treasures and relics of the Prophet Muhammad. Ankara's Museum of Anatolian Civilizations has outstanding Hittite, Phrygian, and other exhibits. Among the largest of Turkey's many libraries are the National Library, in Ankara, and the Beyazit State Library, in Istanbul. I believe that Turkey is a developing country for two reasons these reasons are the fact that the peoples' life expectancy is very short compared to a developed country like the U.S. Like I mentioned before males live to be about 6 and women about 7 years old. Another reason could be because the GDP is only 6%, which means the total value of goods and services produced in a country over a period of time show that the economic activity regardless of who owns the productive assets in that country is very low. Hopefully, one day Turkey will be known as a developed country.

"Helping others can improve our own lives" this is the message we get from texts such as ''The Messenger' and 'Amelie'. In 'Amelie' we are shown the beginning of a young woman's crusade to make the lives of people she meets better in one way or another. It is the fact that Amelie chooses to help people that contrasts with Ed in ''The Messenger' who is at times forcefully encouraged to carry on and has had his path predetermined by a mysterious character. In both Ed's and Amelie's case helping others improves their own life in one way or another.

At the beginning of 'The Messenger' Ed is a very pessimistic character with not much ambition or excitement in his life, all this changes however when he inadvertently prevents a bank robbery. After the bank robbery cards begin to appear in Ed's letterbox with addresses or clues on them. Ed then visits the addresses and helps people at the addresses. Ed experiences both loving appreciation and violent retribution during his tasks keeps going until the final card. One of the more significant quotes in the novel was when the attempted bank robber spoke to Ed in court and said "You're a dead man… remember it everyday you look in the mirror".

In Amelie Amelie's crusade to help people begins after she finds a hidden box containing the childhood memories of a man who had lived in her apartment decades before she did, she decides to try and find the man and give him the box and that if he is touched Amelie will become a regular do-gooder. Amelie required no more motivation to continue her good deeds other than to see the reactions of people she has helped, that's not to say she only committed good deeds. At some stages during the film Amelie had to punish someone to be nice to someone else. Amelie took revenge on grocer Collingnon for his poor treatment of his assistant Lucien by breaking into his apartment and makes subtle yet significant changes to it, like all of her activities she does this anonymously. Ed on the other hand got to know most of the people he helped and most people knew it was him making the changes.

Ed had to resort to violence a couple of times during 'The Messenger' once to stop a man raping his wife and terrorizing his family and again to bring a pair of brawling brothers together. It takes Ed a long time and ultimately a loaded gun in the mail to gather the courage to tackle the rapist and he begins to feel bad about the case but perseveres. When he gets to the Rose brothers and beats one up in order for them to unite against himself he shows that he's begun to understand what he has to do and was happier than he normally would be when the Rose brothers retaliated violently because he realized that he's getting far more good out of helping people than bad.

At the end of both texts the do-gooder becomes the person who is touched themselves and in both cases they are touched the same way. In Amelie, Amelie through her crusade eventually meets Nino, a quirky character to say the least but Amelie herself is never limited to the realms of normality. After succeeding in helping everyone she could, Amelie finally got what was missing from her life a boyfriend in the shape of Nino, someone who she always felt a connection with. In 'The Messenger' Ed makes no secret of his infatuation with Audrey and his frustration at the fact that Audrey seems to fear love. The last card Ed receives has his own address and eventually finds Audrey knocking at the door asking if she could stay for good. These two parts of the two texts could be seen as the main character's reward for getting their hands dirty to improve the lives of others.

Amelie and 'The Messenger' both show us how much seemingly insignificant acts can help brighten up a person's day and they show the potential that an individual has when it comes to impacting on a number of lives. The great thing about stories like this is that it shows you that even in a very small amount of time one person can change many lives. It also shows that helping people with their lives can have great effects on your own and can be extremely rewarding and these stories also show that just because something doesn't seem to be affective at the time if you actually stand back and watch it unfold it may eventually become a significant factor that makes up the bigger picture.

When an individual is qualified for a particular position in business, it is readily assumed by most people that this individual should be equally considered as other candidates, for the position in question. The most acceptable reason for Ann Hopkins to be made partner has to do with her credentials and experience. Price Waterhouse's Office of Government Services in Washington, D.C. had honored Hopkins for her "outstanding performance," and that "no other candidate's record for securing major contracts was comparable." (1) This nomination for Hopkins proved to show that she was equally if not more qualified for candidacy in favor of partnership that year.

Hopkins has a clear interest in being facilitated with equal opportunity rights by means of being offered partnership to the company. Therefore, she feels that what is "morally right" for her is "morally right for others," where "everyone is of equal value."() This has to do with the level of fairness as to how candidates are selected to become partners. After Hopkins initially learned that she was not going to be promoted, she discovered that one reason for her rejection towards partnership was for the reason that she "had irritated some senior partners," and that she "should look more toward appearing more feminine" and "dress less in 'power blues.'"()

If one were to rightfully oppose Hopkins from becoming a partner in Price Waterhouse, the reason would have to be that interference as to who does and doesn't become a partner in the company should not be acceptable. When Hopkins was informed that she was denied partnership, she decided that she was left with four options leave the firm, join the international area to hopefully be proposed for partnership the year after, continue her work at Price Waterhouse, or sue the company with sex discrimination. (4) The reason for this would be that she is acting upon her own self-interests. In accordance to Kant's theory on the second categorical imperative, "people should not be treated as objects incapable of free choice." (5) Here, the company should be free or have the right to choose who will become partner of their corporation or not.

I believe that the result of Hopkins's case was justified. The process of choosing and deciding partnership into the company was conducive to company regulations and standards. It was understood that the company's ethical standards were high for partnership candidates. They were primarily looking for potential partners that were exemplary of standards such as loyalty to the company and staff that also exercised high levels of integrity and professionalism. It is my opinion that the company should use ethical reasoning for declining Hopkins's partnership to the company.

Integrity and loyalty to the company staff is unquestionably critical in business or working environments. In Ann Hopkins's case, however, the short and long forms that described her in the working environment, displayed numerous accusations of her lack of interpersonal and communicational skills. In the partnership admission process, there are great risks involved in the granting of partnership to potential candidates. This is mainly because partners are "more tenured and therefore people that have a likelihood or potential of abusing authority can cause serious long-term problems for the firm." (6) It was later stated that interpersonal skills were taken into great consideration in the process of admission. That is, where the firm had "consistently placed a high premium on a candidate's ability to deal with subordinates and peers on an interpersonal basis and to promote cordial relations within a firm which is necessarily dependent on team effort."(7) My reflection fits with my ethical theory in that ethical standards are essential in any environment, especially in business. I feel that it would be negligent for one to claim that ethics should not be part of an admission process. In essence, job qualifications ought to only be considered as part of the admission or hiring process, and not be the sole consideration as to whether or not one is accepted in a program or position.

What is your dream of the future? Most of people, I believe, have been asked of this question when they were only naïve children of whom the answers are deemed to be certain nobel occupations, such as scientists, professors of the campus, doctors, heads of a firm, etc. As they grew up a little older, like, in their youth, dreams either became more distant and abstract or more close and idiographic. Some of them lost their dreams to which they deviated off the track, while some transformed dreams into ideals which due to their boundless and endless effort, as well as the injudical basis of knowledges and humanities. Nevertheless, the situation may take a dramatical diversification since the time passed, and the objective surrounding affected sufficiently, the ideals faded and all the idealistic thoughts seem to be unfit perfectly to the realistic world. How comes the faith used to be the stanchion of their minds become so paradoxical to realism? Do things always tend to be so?

The story mentioned above, about the evanescence of one's idealistic world, sheds a light on two points the distinction between a dream and a ideal, and the whether or no paradox of idealism and realism.

Firstly, according to the story, one could be enlightened for the differences between dreams and ideals. Dreams could be as imaginative, fantastic, beautiful as possible and requiring no definite roots, backgrounds, or responsibilities. But in the case of ideals, they all rise from a fertile soil of solid determinations and steadfast faiths, feeding by the alimentation of profuse knowledges and canny intellegences. Not only do ideals have roots, but also they have wings.

Where the wings fly to, the idealitic minds encounter the wall of pragmatic society, there lies the second question Is idealism ambivalent to realism? In the society of human beings, too many rules and too much regulation are there for one to obey or be consistent to, that he or she almost forgot what had been chased after before. In the realm of politics, people failed to own a honest and creditable government which they had designed to. In the domain of study, one failed the college entrance examination for a accidently-catching of cold without any sign. In the case of commerce, chasing for profit and fulfilling the interest of a corporation are the whole reason why a enterprise live for, and they pay little concern to what they could do for others in need of helps.

A literary hero may indeed be defined as "a figure noble in personality, who has a tragic character flaw which ultimately causes his downfall." Victor Frankenstein, however, cannot accurately be defined as a literary hero. I take no issue with Frankenstein's possession of tragic character flaws; I concede that he has many. Nor do I argue that his downfall was the result of anything but hamartia. Victor Frankenstein's sole virtue lies in his truthful relation of the sordid story; he describes with grim accuracy his betrayal of Justine, the conscious endangerment of his darling Elizabeth, his craven attempts to flee the consequences of his youthful indiscretion, and the horrifying egotism which led the young Frankenstein to give life to a monster that would eventually destroy him. The willful selfishness Victor Frankenstein displays throughout the novel reveals his personality to be decidedly ignoble.

There are certainly a number of ways in which Victor Frankenstein's scientific techniques could have been put to innocuous, if not noble, use. Were Frankenstein interested simply in furthering scientific research and contributing to the knowledge of the time, he could easily have chosen to create an animal, rather than an eight-foot-tall humanoid monstrosity with human emotions. His motive for tampering with the natural boundaries between life and death is simple Frankenstein wishes to be a god.

A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs.

Frankenstein assumes that he will possess the absolute loyalty of his creations, regardless of how he treats them. He wishes to conquer the "ideal bounds" of life and death, but only for the sake of the notoriety and admiration such a feat is sure to bring. He wishes to rule over a kingdom of beings created by his own hand, but does not trouble himself over their happiness or quality of life. In essence, he aspires only to conquer. Fortunately, the day has passed when blunt ambition and thirst for power could be viewed as admirable qualities. We now demand that our conquerors display certain redeeming qualities, such as affection for their troops, bravery, mercy, love of country, or selflessness. Victor Frankenstein is devoid of such redeeming qualities, demonstrating in their place a grotesquely bloated ego that prevents him from thinking rationally, ethically, and nobly about the rights of his hideous creation and the consequences his experiment will have on the human race.

Just as daydreaming about becoming a doctor will not earn one a license to practice medicine, merely agonizing over one's moral transgressions will not grant one a heroic character or a noble spirit. Though Victor Frankenstein readily admits to his anguish, his guilt, and his impossible wretchedness, he does not consider admitting his sins to the court that tries Justine for a murder his monster committed. Both his reluctance to take responsibility for the role he played in Justine's wrongful conviction and his refusal to confess his crimes to either the authorities or his loved ones indicate that he values the public's favorable perception of his sanity and rectitude above Justine's life. He bemoans the "timorousness" of the character witnesses called upon in Justine's defense, but makes no effort to follow Elizabeth's example, and testify on her behalf. Indeed, Frankenstein's only physical response to his cousin's unjust conviction is to excuse himself from the situation

…I rushed out of the court in agony. The tortures of the accused did not equal mine; she was sustained by innocence, but the fangs of remorse tore my bosom, and would not forego their hold.

Though Justine is the subject of the prosecution's condemnation and bears the resulting punishment, it is Frankenstein's personality which is truly on trial. We consider Frankenstein's unspoken defense of his own inaction, and find him guilty of the cowardice and ignobility of character that allows him to observe Justine's misfortune but dismiss it, in favor of the self-indulgent contemplation of own victim status. It may be that no effort on Frankenstein's part would have been sufficient to influence the jury or console Justine. But literary heroes are notorious for fighting impossible fights, driven by an innate sense of morality. Frankenstein's self-pity in the face of Justine's imminent execution is behavior better suited to a literary villain, not the hero.
