Topic ¡°Gilbert begins and end the film in the same place yet he has traveled far¡± Do you agree?

¡°Gilbert Grape has had to leave his dreams behind because of circumstances. He has a hostility that he can¡¯t express because of his duties and responsibilities to his family. To be able to deal with himself every day, he¡¯s had to make himself numb so that he¡¯s not affected too much by everything.¡± (Johnny Depp)

¡°In the film, Gilbert is, in the words of the director, a ¡°reactor¡± his own impulses and needs have been subjugated so thoroughly that he seems passive, only responding to the calls and demands of others, to the extent that he can only see his life in terms of other people...¡±

Gilbert Grape lives with his family in the town of Endora in Iowa. He works in Lamson¡¯s Grocery, which, like Endora itself, is slowly dying.

The film opens as Gilbert and Arnie enact their yearly ritual of waiting for the flaming caravans of the Airstream Trailer Club to pass through

In the beginning of the film Gilbert is a quiet person. He is withdrawn and seemed like an outsider in his own family. He doesnt really fit into his surroundings and he seems numb towards himself.

It Becky¡¯s arrival that began the changed that we gradually saw in Gilbert. His attitude towards his duties and responsibilities to his family changed after he hit Arnie. ¡°I hit him so hard ¡ you don¡¯t hurt Arnie, you just don¡¯t¡¡± it is only after his beating of Arnie, and his talk with Becky about his father, that we see him change from reacting to acting. He will no longer regard his mother as a joke, so he responds by setting up the house for her funeral.

Over the cause of the film Gilbert undergoes deep change. He is at first embarrassed by his mother, speaks unsympathetically of her and even, at on point, lifts a small child to the window to peek at her. Yet in the final scenes, with Bonnie on her bed, there is love, tenderness and respect between the two.

Emotionally Gilbert has changed enormously. The views which he held towards family and life has changed, the way in which he looks at people has changed, and the way he saw his mother has changed.

Towards the end of the film when Gilbert wants his mother to meet Becky he says ¡°I¡¯m not going to hurt you any more. I promise.¡± At the beginning of the film you would not have heard or expected Gilbert to say something like that, however towards the end he realised that he was being inconsiderate and cruel.

He also confronts his father¡¯s death by going down to the basement. He wasn¡¯t able to do that till 17 years later which showed how much he was affected by it, nevertheless in the end he went down there and faced the truth.

The responsibility of Arnie in the beginning seemed like a bundle on Gilbert and he once said ¡°some days you want him to live and some days you don¡¯t¡± However during the last few scenes he accepted the responsibility of Arnie.

The ending also showed Gilbert and the family working as a ¡®family¡¯ as they moved everything out of the house. As you see the house go up in flames, you can also see traces of the old Gilbert burn away as well.

So in the end he was free. Free to make his own decisions, free to go anywhere, and free of his responsibilities and duties to his mother.

In 116, the French were taken by surprise at Verdun, trapped by the Germans. Quickly, Britain had to make an attempt to free the French army from their superior opposition. The plan was to make an attack at the Somme and then after defeating the Germans, free their French counterparts. However, the Germans were using scout planes and observer balloons, making themselves aware of the impeding British assault. They dug themselves deep in twelve-metre deep trenches; because there was nothing else that they could do, but defend their conquered land. As more new roads and railway lines appeared, so did many British volunteer soldiers, ammunition and other supplies. On 4th June 116, the Allied forces began an artillery bombardment of the enemy trenches, unaware of how deep they were. This continued constantly until 1st July. The British commander, General Haig, believed that this had annihilated the German trenches and so it would be easy for his battalions to simply march across no-man's land into empty trenches. These trenches were empty, but the Germans were not dead- they were sitting comfortably in their deep dugouts!

On the same day as the end of the barrage, 100,000 troops were sent over the top in what is known as the 'Big Push'. Soon after daylight, troops climbed out of their trenches and marched slowly, in long lines, wave after wave, across the forty kilometres of no man's land. Each soldier carried around thirty kilograms of equipment, containing shovels, wire-cutters and sections of bridges that would allow them to reach the opposite trenches. Few made it that far. A worse factor for the Allies was that the artillery barrage had only destroyed a few of its targets; the dugouts were untouched, as were the guns and little barbed wire was moved. The Germans had been alerted about this offensive and so the 'Tommies' were easy targets for the German machine guns.

At 70 a.m. a huge mine was ignited under the German trenches. Unlike most of its equal, it did destroy its target, but also alerted the enemy to the advancing lines of infantry. Men quickly manned their posts and within minutes the Allied positions were being shelled. By 45 the battle for that day was practically over. Most men did not even reach their own barbed wire, and if they did manage to get any further attempted to throw bombs at the enemy trenches, before they were cut down by machine gun fire. In this day alone, the British Army suffered 57,470 casualties and 8,000 Germans were dead or wounded.

Nevertheless, General Haig continued with this misguided tactic until 1th November 116, when the British were still three miles from Bapaume and Serre, part of their first day objectives. By the end of this bloody campaign, the British death toll totalled 41,654 and the German count amounted to a figure between 450,000 and 680,000. The Somme was a battle lost by the British due to their lack of intelligence. Their poor artillery bombardment lost them many hundreds of thousands of men and their inability to change tactics triggered many deaths. The new tanks that were used were ineffective against the powerful guns and mud, and the sheer force of numbers did not win them the battle this time.

It is embarrassing to claim, but I have not read many plays thus far in my schooling. So reading the play Antigone (translated by Elizabeth Wyckoff) posed a slight difficulty for me, especially in the beginning of the play before I had the change to alter my mind set to the language and time period. However, after reading the play I was amazed by it. Aeschylus performed a wonderful job when he created this, and Elizabeth Wyckoff did an even greater job at translating it into the language we understand.

It was to my understanding that the play was simply about a King (Creon) who ultimately learned a very serious lesson of not to be stubborn and coldhearted. He (King Creon) placed orders for Antigone, the future wife of his only son Haemon, to be put to death after she went against his orders and attempted to give her brother Polyneices a semi-proper burial. King Creon had strictly forbidden this, so when he learned that she had blatantly gone against his orders he was more or less severely pissed off. He acts out of rage, yet fails to consider the position that Antigone had been placed in. He displays the signs of a selfish man instead of a compassionate king. Wyckoff does a remarkable job in trying to make this as obvious as possible. Which was really convenient for me since most plays set in this time period are difficult to decipher even when they have been translated.

Probably the most aggravating part of the whole play (again this is only my opinion) was that King Creon was not only responsible for the death of Antigone, but also the deaths of both his son Haemon and his wife Eurydice. The mother and son both commited suicide simultaneously, because of the ignorance of Creon, and his inability to listen to Heamon's cries to spare his bride-to-be. On page 54 one of the messengers says, "…Yes, when a man has lost all happiness, he's not alive. Call him a breathing corpse." This accurately describes how Haemon most likely became after Antigone suffered death. He became void of happiness and therefore to spite his father and be with his bride he took his own blood. Unfortunately his mother could not bear the pain of losing her son and performed the same action.

Elizabeth Wyckoff displays in her rendition that because of all of the deaths that occurred because of King Creon he becomes very depressed and begins to realize that he in not a good king, but in fact a horrible one. He no longer wished to be around "his people," but secluded in his own misery; just as he should be in my mind for being so complex. In fact, the quote I used above about the walking corpse could very much apply to King Creon after all of the incidents for the simple fact that he doomed himself to a very lonely life after killing his own family. In the end it was he who learned the ultimate lesson and was left to be miserable in his own choices.

This play was tragic, yet I thought it was romantic in a morbid sense because of the fact that Haemon took his own life in order to be with his future bride. This play opened my eyes to the fact that not all plays are boring and pointless, even the one's that are from a completely different era. Thanks to Elizabeth Wyckoff and Aeschylus, and their superb writing and translation I now have a better understanding and respect for plays.

I know that sometimes some things can't always be change. I know that everything in this life happens for a reason. Or at least that's what I have been told my whole life. But there are some things in life that make you see beyond reason, beyond all you've ever known, and make you think about how hard it is in life to actually find something substantial to make you believe in life after death. Making you grasp for something which seems surreal in amidst the dark caverns of eternity. This eternity is such a one that no one wants to serve it out alone.

It was a day seeming like any other except for one thing. It was the only day of my life which had left my soul tainted, black. I'm writing again these letters to you, I'm not sleeping. I need you to understand that the things I am about to do, are not your fault, they are mine. I want you to turn a blind eye and accept no responsibility for anything you may read about this day. Do you notice I'm gone? I'm not here as is as before nor am I there. I just run so far away. I saw his eyes drop, I saw the tears.

These were the sorts of things that flew around my mind everyday.

Marble Chips / Hydrochloric Acid

Rates of Reaction Marble Chips and Hydrochloric Acid

Rates of Reaction

PLANNING

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on rate of reaction between marble chips and hydrochloric acid

AIM

To find if changing the concentration of an acid will increase or decrease the rate of the reaction when marble is dissolved in hydrochloric acid.

PREDICTION

When the concentration of acid increases, more gas will be given off faster. I know this from my trial experiments.

METHOD

Since I will be working with strong acid, I will wear safety goggles while conducting the experiment.

I will use Marble chips all of a small size. I can use a sieve to make sure they are all roughly similar size- about 7mm diameter.

The amount of acid I have decided on is 10ml. And so the amount of marble must be in excess - g.

I can measure the speed of the reaction by how much gas is given off. I can measure this in cm in a gas syringe. When the experiment takes place, I will take the reading every 10 second to get a good graph for the results. If the reaction goes very quickly, I will take the readings every five seconds.

To be sure I can rely on my results I will repeat he experiment twice or three times if necessary, because there is chance of inaccurate results for many reasons.

I learnt from the trial experiments that it is quite hard to start a stopwatch, pour acid and stick a bung into a boiling tube all at the same time, so I will get someone to assist me while doing so.

If the experiment goes on for a ridiculous time, I will cut it off. I dont think it is necessary to have the experiment go over three minutes, so I will cut it off then. Also, if the amount of gas goes off the scale I will stop it there.

It is important to keep the starting temperatures constant for all the reactions as this can affect the results by giving the particles more energy (and making it faster).

Analysis of Results.

From the experiment, I have found that an increased concentration of acid increases the rate of the reaction.

I think that the best way of displaying these results is by drawing a line graph. In it, I have used the average of the two sets of results. The pattern I can see is that when the reaction first starts, the reaction is fastest, from then on, the reaction slows. We can see this because the gradient of the curve is steepest at the beginning.

The cause of this curve is that at the start of the reaction, there is the most ammount of acid molecules that are colliding with the marble. (I can draw this from my initial hypothesis)

OBTAINING EVIDENCE

TABLE of RESULTS

Concentration of Acid. Time 10 0 0 40 50 60 70 80

0.5 15 0 5 8 0 4 6 7 8

0.5 14 8 8 41 44 47 48 50

1 8 48 58 67 7 8 7 100 105

1 0 40 54 64 7 81 86 1040 60 76 0 1008 55 74 8 1000 44 70 85 1100 6 0 110

4 7 115

4 0 65 87 110

During the experiment, I kept the starting temperature constant at degrees.

I stop watch to time the experiment.

I wore safety glasses.

Time is in seconds. Concentration is in morality..

I repeated the experiment twice to make sure my results were reliable.

Behind the glamour of the extravagant parties thrown by Jay Gatsby, lies a dark underbelly of society, which is evident through out the novel. The reader may also become aware that behind the 'show' of the massive parties thrown by Gatsby, lie forces that are shallow and destructive. In this essay I will be examining what exactly lies behind the glamorous parties and how everything is not how it seems to be to everyone looking in from a distance.

The words that can be used to sum up the life behind the glamorous parties are 'shallow' and 'destructive'. On the outside to everyone who attends the parties all that is seen is glamour and signs of wealth, which is provided by Gatsby, but behind all the wealth and glamour lie a darker side to it all. Tom and Daisy play a key role in this in several ways, one such way would be by using their 'position in society' to look down and pass judgement on people and make themselves think that they are better than every one else. As Nick says about Daisy, "in a moment she looked at me with a smirk on her face which asserted her place in a secret society that only her and Tom belonged to…" It is this mind that that allows Tom to cheat on his wife, Daisy and allow the both of them to walk so easily away from the death of Myrtle.

One example of how there is a 'darker side' to the glamorous parties is when Tom hits his own wife, Daisy in the face at one of the parties in front of the other guests, it is once again their attitude toward life which allows them to move on so easily from this incident. As well as the incident of Tom and Daisy 'cheating' on one another, both people are cheating on one another, yet when they find out a rather 'careless' attitude is shown by both of them and they are able to move on, so easily.

'Carelessness' is also shown quite a few times in the novel, their actions are careless and this is mainly due to the 'ease' of their lives. This carelessness can be seen when Tom and Daisy run away after Myrtle is killed or when Jordan is taking Nick driving, through the city. These people do not worry about their actions and do as they please, Tom is also not worried about hurting his relationship with Daisy so he makes the most of his relationship with Myrtle. Daisy in return, goes off with Gatsby with out a care in the world for her marriage. As the reader is shown, consequences are rarely thought of in the novel and the characters live their lives without thinking about their actions or the consequences of them.

At the end of the novel the reader is also given the strong idea that Nick goes to the mid-west to 'escape' the culture that he has experienced whilst living with the characters in the novel.

The destructive and shallow forces in the novel are shown through several different ways, such as the way that the characters can live their lives so 'care free' and not think about consequences or their actions, or the way in which the characters are able to move on from things so easily and the 'dark underbelly' of the glamorous parties thrown by Jay Gatsby.

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole Covering pages 1 through 110 of 46 total pages.

A. This story takes place in late 160s New Orleans.

B. The protagonist of the story is Ignatius J. Reilly. He is an educated yet bumbling oaf. Ignatius is a larger than life character who has trouble fitting into the accepted role of society. He is a large man and his unusual method of dress has made him the suspect of Mr. Mancuso; a cop struggling to meet his quota of suspicious person arrests. In the early parts of this book Ignatius seems to be motivated by cynicism alone. He lives to complain about others while doing very little for himself. He is a very intelligent character, having received a master's degree, yet he is obviously lacking in social skills.

C. Conflicts are one thing this character has had an abundance of. Ignatius J. Reilly has a problem with just about everyone and everything. As a student of European history, he pities himself for having been born into this century. Ignatius will go to bad movies just to mock others for enjoying such garbage. The only clear antagonist is also Ignatius J. Reilly. He is extremely self-centered. He cannot be bothered by the problems of others in the world. Even his own mother, who he still lives with at the age of thirty, has been unsuccessful in making him get a job until recently. Ignatius' mother was recently in a car accident in which she was driving while intoxicated. Rather than take her to court, and probably send her to jail, the victim has asked for a settlement, but it is more than Mrs. Reilly can afford. Ignatius finally concedes to find a job, but not to help out his mother. The goal of his job isn't money, but rather to get an inside view of the society that he so abhors.

D. Currently a main issue in the story is Ignatius' job at Levy Pants. In his private journals and in dialogue Ignatius has vowed to renovate the Levy Company which is plagued by employees with bad work habits and the feeble, yet humorous, Miss Trixie. Ignatius has been pretty true to his word as of yet, so I believe that the future of the story will center largely on his role with the Levy Company. Characters, as well as businesses, have been introduced in this story with a problem which is later addressed. Examples of this are the Night of Joy Bar, Jones, Mr. Mancuso, and Mrs. Reilly. Of these, Jones for example, was introduced at a police station being after being arrested for vagrancy. A few chapters later he gets a job at the Night of Joy Bar, an establishment needing good, and cheap help, but also the sight of an altercation between the Reilly's and the bar's owner. The problem for Levy Pants is efficiency. Barely any work gets done because employees are not on a strict work schedule. People show up to work on some days, but won't call or show up others. Because of the low wages Levy Pants offers, temporary help seems to be all they can find. Ignatius has pledged to turn the company around. I am unsure if he will be successful, but he will certainly try and the result should be entertaining either way.

From what I gathered Kristof believes that if the Chinese have been more interested in money they would have rather traveled and conquered instead of worrying about their prestige and education. Kristof writes that the elite Chinese did not care about business. They actually thought less of those that had to do with business or money. For instance, merchants who might have been wealthy would have still been in the bottom of the class system, because to the Chinese money was not important.

I agree to what Kristof say just because anything could be possible. It is difficult to say that the Chinese would not have been able to conquer the New World, because they never tried it. So we do not know if they would have succeeded. I also agree with the comment Kristof says that the Europeans were greedier so that pushed them more. That motivated them to discover new lands in order to get more treasure and wealth, while the Chinese did not care.

Some of the reasons for trading that I understood in Zhang Han's essay had mostly to do with comfort. For instance, in the beginning of the essay the first line reads "Money and profit are of great importance to men." Then he explains that men that become merchants will live in luxury and will eat fine food. Somehow I do not believe that the Chinese would agree with this, just because they supposedly don't want to be involves in business. Because of this they missed out in a lot of opportunities. That would have helped out their technology and society.

In Columbus letter to the king and queen he describes the inhabitants of the islands as scared, they fled when they saw them, they were also timid, naive, and generous. In a section of the letter he says that they "display as much love as if they would give their hearts." This to me show how good-hearted they were and how they were taking advantage of, because Columbus did take advantage of this, and not only Columbus but the other explorers that came after him.

The comments that Sale says about the inhabitants of the islands, according from what Columbus wrote, were since they did not have any religions or speech they would be good servants, or slave since they would not be paid. Of course they were not able to make the natives slaves since many of them were killed or died from diseases.

All of these actions show me how the Spaniards were savages. Even though they wore clothes, had a 'religion', 'knew' a language, they were still savages and uncivilized in the way they acted. All their teaching did not show them how to treat other people that did not look like them; apparently they believed they were better. They were also greedy because when they were invited to stay with the king of the Aztecs, the moment they knew about the treasure they were already planning on how to steal. That is not really nice. The Aztecs acted more friendly, although they might have been suspicious they still did not treat them rudely.

Love in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" is represented in so many different ways. The two characters who most intrigue me with their representations of love are Lysander and Helena. I think that these characters point out a few, sometimes true, social stereotypes. These are points that are necessary to the story, but perhaps Shakespeare was trying to fit in his observations in society.

Lysander is a fickle character. It is portrayed as no fault of his own that his love for Hermia wanders, but I think there is a bigger statement to be made. Whomever Lysander loves at the time, he loves over the top and ridiculously. He appears to want to go to the ends of the Earth for the woman. I've been in a relationship with a guy like this, and it gets very old very quickly. No one wants to be told over and over all these things, but the women in this play don't seem to mind. I know that this is necessary to move the plot along, but it just seems over the top.

When Puck redirects Lysander's love, it is immediately devoted to Helena. He fawns over her and carries on and she wants no part of it because he is to be married to Hermia. Could he not have simply fallen out of love with Hermia and been lusting after Helena? That is a more likely situation. He treats this love as his ultimate love though, due to the potion that Puck put on his eyes.

Helena also has her own set of problems. She seems to enjoy being put down and verbally abused. She is following Demetrius around and is determined to make him love her. Of course, his put downs only encourage her. This happens in society all the time, and the women in Helena's place wish for a fairy or a Puck character to come along and make the man love them. I think this is part of the reason that the characters are fairies, because the things they do are things that people only wish they could do.

I have also been in Helena's place before. I was in a relationship with a guy who said only mean and hurtful things to me, and this eventually wore me down to the point where I started to believe him. Helena is sort of this way. Demetrius threatens to kill her or harm her and she doesn't fight it at all. At least it's going to be him, she thinks. These thoughts and actions seem so horrible to me looking in on them, but when you are there it is very hard to realize the things that are going on. All Helena sees is a man she loves who refuses to love her back. I think that is why we are appalled by her actions; if we were in her shoes it may not seem so extreme.

I think that Shakespeare made several statements in the course of this play about the way that males and females interact when they are in love. We dream of things getting better, and that results in the fairy world. Men are fickle, as are Lysander's actions. And women sometimes ignore the verbal abuse that is obvious to everyone else around them, because they are in love with a man. These are statements that still work with our society today, and this is why the play still works. If these were actions that we couldn't relate to at all, it would not be interesting to read. But because we have all been in the shoes of one character or another, we can identify with them.

Lust. Hatred. Violence. These are words that arouse an almost anti-religious sentiment. However, they are also popular topics in today's movie industry. This industry is evolving in enormous strides, yet, it is clear that there has always been one purpose in the minds of directors and producers to please the audience. Even now, with the technology to create realistic images from scratch and a seemingly infinite pool of movie scripts, directors must constantly spew out new approaches to films in order to gain approval from an increasingly critical crowd.

When we first set out to make a movie, we wanted to discover a way in which the public would adore someone as a writer and producer. The people had to love our movie. We concentrated on what the people desired, and that alone, which we did by directly giving them what they wanted. It was a movie that combined the fantasy of Legend, drama of Citizen Kane, and action of James Bond, all in one, not dealing with any ambiguous messages that leave the public standing alone without an answer. By piecing together what we felt were intrinsic qualities of a blockbuster hit, we developed a movie that the people could not resist.

First off, our movie had to portray the beauty and art of the human body. As all directors in the business know, nudity means ratings. It is what people want. This prompted us into painting the background as a nude beach. Dealing with some nudity, the audience also wants some sort of a dramatic story in the movie, so we decided to put a love triangle of lesbians cheating on each other, getting mad and killing one another.

It also had to illustrate the reality of violence through graphic scenes. Gory images of decapitated bodies, slit throats, and the like were highly favorable. People running around screaming for their lives seemed like an interesting topic to put into our movie. The characters had to have some sort of weird twist to them so we decided that our characters should be cannibals.

There also seemed to be a demand for characters to which the audience could relate. We combined my characters' natural speech with profanity. We also wanted to make the movie appealing to the younger generation, and succeeded marvelously in adding characters that interested them. There had to be teenage potheads and gangsters living a life full of hardships and failures.

A movie that is made to make the audience think makes the critical crowd full of rage. People always wondering about what a movie meant and what its meaning behind it makes them aggravated and frustrated. Therefore, a movie that was very straight forward and let the audience know what kind of message it was trying to portray was created by our hands.

Following such a format, we were then able to put together our masterpiece the story of a teenage gang made up of violent lesbian cannibals cussing and running around naked while getting high.

"Perfection." There was no other name we could give it. Creating a story with perfect elements could not be anything less. Not only that, but we wanted to lucidly portray these elements which, other movies usually just implied. A movie that did not vaguely refer to drug use, sex, and violence, but one that just gave it to them. Many people might wonder how we came up with such an ingenious idea, but it is very plain and simple. The movie industry business is already heading in that direction and we are just mainly ahead of the game.

Physics Coursework

Plan

I am going to set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram. I will measure the current with varying lengths using an ammeter. To keep it a fait test I will maintain the wire the same thickness and make sure the voltage is constant using a voltmeter. To make the experiment accurate, I will perform it times, recording all sets of results. The length of wire I use will be form 5cm to 45cm. Before I perform the actual experiment I will take out a preliminary test to fore see any problems that may happen during the experiment.

Theory

Write my Essay on Investigating the effect of the length of wire on the current in a circuit. for me

The current in a circuit pushes around electric charge. The electric charge in a circuit is carried around by coulombs. Wire is made up of particles. The longer the wire the particles there are for the coulombs to bounce off. The more the coulombs bounce off the particles the more they vibrate, the more they vibrate, the more heat they create. The hotter the coulombs get the more resistance there will be.

Hypothesis

The longer the wire the lower the current will be. This is because the more wire the charge has to pass through, the more energy it uses up as there are more particles so there is a bigger chance of the coulombs colliding with them. When the coulombs collide with the particles they vibrate and they get hotter.

I think that the longer the wire the higher the resistance will be.

Apparatus

Power pack

cables

Voltmeter

Ammeter

Crocodile clips

Metre rule

1 piece of wire.

Method

· Set up apparatus as shown in the diagram.

· Measure the length of the wire held by the crocodile clips to 5cm.

· Record the current in amps in a table.

· Repeat the above with different lengths of wire, keeping the voltage input the same the same throughout the experiment.

Results Table

The voltage was kept constant at 7.0 volts.

Current (amps)

Length of wire (cm) 1.00 .00 .00 Average

5.00 5.18 5.6 5.46 5.0

10.00 .5 .50 .77 .60

15.00 .7 .18 .5 .5

0.00 . .60 .58 .50

5.00 .0 .08 .18 .10

0.00 1.78 1.85 1.8 1.87

5.00 1.61 1.65 1.7 1.66

40.00 1.44 1.4 1.65 1.5

45.00 1.1 1.8 1.17 1.

Conclusion

My results bring me to the conclusion that the longer the wire is the higher the resistance is. This because the current in a circuit pushes around electric charge. My results agree with my hypothesis.
