Jenny Lo

Two weeks ago the Trinity High School¡¦s vice headmaster, Brother Leon, began the high school¡¦s annual chocolate sale. This year there are 0,000 boxes to be sold at a price of $ each.

Students complained regarding to the amount of work that would be involved because the quota of the chocolates have been doubled, and the price of the chocolates have been doubled as well.

However, Brother Leon pointed out, ¡§The chocolate sale is plainly voluntary work; students can refuse to sell the chocolates. I am sure each boy is willing to do his part for the school. Those that accept are the true sons of Trinity.¡¨

Despite the importance of the traditional sale, one freshman has decided to say no to the burden of the sale. Jerry Renault states, ¡§There isn¡¦t a reason to why I refuse; I just don¡¦t feel like selling the chocolates.¡¨

Rumors have been spreading around the school that a secret underground organization is involved in the chocolate sale. Whether The Vigils are backing up the chocolate sale or are opposing the sale, the students have different opinions.

¡§The Vigils are probably behind the sale,¡¨ Danny Arcangelo claims, ¡§I believe that they are giving assignments to people to sell more than the quota given.¡¨

On the other hand, Kevin Chartier argues that, ¡§I think the Renault freshman has a Vigil assignment. Possibly The Vigils told the freshman to refuse to sell chocolates to make Brother Leon go mad.¡¨

¡§I lived during a time when the word peace had little meaning, when the great lords of Japan fought over that country like dogs oer a bone. A time when blood flowed like rivers and no man knew at sunrise if he would be alive when the sun set. A world filled with treachery and hate, tortured by the vanity of men who wished to rule over others before they had learned to master themselves.¡¨ (pg. Xiv)

¡§¡KBut to humiliate even the dead body of your enemy is shameful. Oda Nobunaga had crucified his own honor rather than Lord Akiyama¡¦s.¡¨ (pg. )

¡§I leapt toward the corner of the room where I kept a bamboo sword my father had given me. Once I held it in my hand I turned toward the soldier in an attitude of defense.¡¨ (page 6) [Taro]

¡§There is nothing that can make a man feel more alive than to have been near death. Suddenly you realize what a precious gift your life is, and your eyes open to the beauty of the world around you.¡¨ (page 76)

¡§Your lord is like your father, you must follow him wherever he leads, even into death, to the road to the west.¡¨ Page 11.

¡§Poverty is not the best condition for ensuring honesty.¡¨ Page 7.

¡§¡K some of them will come back heroes, but there are other who won¡¦t come back at all. The heroes will be given land and some of the spoil of battle. The others, those who won¡¦t come back? They will be given land too, but not so much ¡V just enough for a grave.¡¨ P.71

The wounded man rode his horse toward the castle. He was badly hurt, and one of the younger men among the archers ran after him, a short spear in his hand. I watched as he caught up with the mounted samurai and thrust his spear from below. For a moment the warrior remained in the saddle, then he fell to the ground. The young bowman drew out the spear ad thrust it into the dying man once more. I saw him stripping the man of his armor and helmet, but when he lifted the dead man¡¦s sword to sever head from body, I turned away. Pg. 71

Voyages of Discovery

The voyages of discovery materialized from the Spanish's need for spices, gold, free labor, and other goods. The Spanish financed many explores to search for a cheaper and quicker way to the Indies. The Indies and eastern Asia had abundant amounts of spices and silks that they were willing to trade at a relatively cheap price. The first of these explores was Christopher Columbus.

Columbus set forth from Spain in 14 and sailed east across the Atlantic Ocean. This was unheard of because at this time the majority of the population thought that the earth was flat and that any one that sailed east would fall off the edge of the earth. The original trade routes to eastern parts of Asia was to sail south around Africa and then north up to India or to take land routes across the European content then through the Asia to reach India. Columbus eventually landed in what is now San Salvador. Upon landed he was greeted by the native inhabitants, the Taino Indians. They were very hospitable and generous with their resources which included their women. Columbus realized that these people could be taken advantage of and turned into slaves. Thinking that he had reached Japan he returned back to Spain and told of his voyage. This sparked centuries of exploration and conquest of the newly found North and South Americas.

Spain then set forth more explores, who were actually conquers in particular Hernan Cortes. The Spanish weapons and military tactics were very advanced compared to the major empires of the Americas. The introduction of horses and guns easily dominated the fear stricken tribes. Cortez made allies, which he soon broke, with the harsh rulers. The rulers in the Americas used fear to dominate the smaller tribes. The rulers would command the smaller tribes to build their roads, pay tribute, and farm to support the major cities populations. The smaller tribes may have looked upon Cortes as being their liberator, but this was quickly changed. Cortes captured the rulers through varied techniques. Cortes tried to make these imprisoned chiefs into puppet rulers. When the rulers would object or try to find other methods of release they killed or executed. The Spanish easily conquered the Americas; the spread of European diseases, mainly small pox, wiped out most of the population and made the rest weak and vulnerable. After the Americas were controlled by Spain the people and resources were exploited.

The natives of the Americas were forced into slavery working in the mining, agricultural, and shipping industries. At first the labor was actual slavery, the people would spend long hours slaving away to satisfy the always hungry European economy. The Spanish harvested the gold and silver. They also forced the people to produce food and leather goods to support the mining industry. Later in the exploitation of the Americas physical slavery disappeared but was changed into economical slavery. The workers would have to buy the necessities from the mining shops which would put them in a debt that they could never pay off. The money that was given to the workers was quickly given back to the industry plus some. The workers would then have to work to pay off the debts which in turn created more debt. The natives would eventually die from the hard labor in the mines.

Todays youth could really listen to the advice from Benjamin Franklin s Poor Richards Almanac. If teenagers would only do the tasks that they need to do today, then they would be less stressed and would not worry about it tomorrow. They could also do a better job at what they were doing, instead of having rushed through it and done a poor job. That is why they should listen to Benjamin Franklins aphorism, Have you somewhat to do tomorrow, do it today.

Teenagers today live in a rushed world. They always tend to have to do something, even after they just finished with something else. They are at school, playing sports, doing homework, or working at a job. Teens do not get much time to relax without worrying about the next task they need to do. Thus, teens tend to put things off until later so that they can finish something they are currently working on, or get a while to relax and enjoy themselves. By the time they get around to the task they put off, they are either rushed with time and do poorly on it, or they just give up and decide to blow it off. So teens are busily working about their lives and when they put something off, they hope it wont be important or that people will let them do it later.

Teens believe that everyone will do what best benefits themselves. They tend to think that everything and everyone revolves around them. When a student comes to class without the assignment, they hope that the teacher will just let them make it up. Even though everyone else had to do the same assignment in the same amount of time, they think that they should get more time than everyone else should. They feel that because they procrastinated and did not do the work, they should get a special privilege and are allowed to finish the task later. This is why they tend to put things off, because they think everyone will wait for them to finish before continuing on with their tasks and lives.

In conclusion, you should never put off any tasks until the last minute. You should do what you need to do as soon as you can; otherwise you might not be happy with the results of waiting until the last minute. That is why Franklin's aphorism "Have you somewhat to do tomorrow, do it today, is important to today's youth. If you don't do what is necessary, eventually you have too many tasks to do, causing you to forget about important necessities, do bad on your work, mess up, or ruin your work that could of been great.

Compare the past & present influence of technology on business organizations.

Technology is becoming a greater factor in the business world today, In today's society organizations are forced to be competitive, it is becoming imperative that companies be equipped to integrate and assimilate information technology in ways that would encourage such competitiveness. With increasing competition, organizations need to strive to increase the value of money and reduce costs.

Information Systems are used effectively to increase production and stay ahead of the competition and to provide high quality customized products at a competitive price to customers all around the world. In order to facilitate the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. Applications such as electronic mail, video conferencing, word processing, spreadsheet documents, voice- mail, along with document preparation, storage, and sharing are all available to employees over these systems. Electronic data interchange has been implemented to allow employees with quick and easy transfer of business documentation electronically, without manual intervention. Such paper documents as purchase orders, order acknowledgements, requests for quotations, quotes, shipping notices are now done over the computer to alleviate both time and distance. Such a system has advantages for the following reasons. 1. For faster speed of doing business. . Cost savings. Purchase order processing costs are one key source of cost savings. Some of these costs savings are due to the elimination of data entry errors that result from the re keying of data as they pass from organization to organization. . Improved customer/supplier relationships. Firms are increasingly dependent on each other to achieve competitive advantage, and Electronic data interchange creates partnerships between customers and suppliers and other strategic partners. Another step to automation is the training and education of employees. Different companies offer on site training or the possibility to take courses at their expense. Since technology is so widely used in the business organization, it is imperative that each employee be able to function at the same level, so not to slow any process down. With technology, our business organizations have found ways to improve the quality, performance, and look of their products. Post, Lawrence, Weber, described technology change as a "dramatic enhancement to our lives, work and health and that we may need to have limits or guidance in the business world, as well as government and society. In 16 mailing advertisements would cost organizations around $87,000 and in today's world the internet advertisers can reach the same amount of people for just a few cents on the dollar (Post, Lawrence, Weber, pg57, Business and society th edition 1) By constantly upgrading and ensuring our business world is on the cutting edge of technology.

THE EMERGING UNDERCLASS

Andrew Thompson

"Young people are now the significant losers from the radical transformation in the nature and shape of work in Australia over the past two decades" (Kirby report, 000)

Once upon time it was commonplace to leave school at 16, get a job and be fairly confident of holding it until you were handed your gold watch upon retirement. Enter economic rationalism; downsizing and all of sudden things ain't what they used to be. The casualisation of the work place has left many young people with no job security.

When Adam Coote left school, he didn't feel like going to university, he'd had enough of school and wanted to join the work force straight way. It's a decision he has now come to regret.

"I started working casually at factory, it was pretty boring but the money was good, then they lost a contract that they were counting on, all of a sudden me and about 0 others were told we were out of a job. From there I've been working for different job agencies. For the last two years I haven't been at the same workplace for more than 6 weeks"

It's a trend that's becoming all to common according to Cate Steinfort, Executive officer of Inner Eastern Lens, an organization aimed at battling the wave of youth unemployment.

Mrs Steinfort says that employing on a casual basis has become a popular trend among large companies.

"They have a much smaller wage bill, they have much less work cover, they don't have to have to carry staff in quiet times, They just pull people in when they need them, they don't have to carry all the costs for employing someone and keeping them employed."

Those most prone to the change in the workforce are young unskilled workers who have no qualifications, but are enticed by the high wages earned on causal rates. It's these people, says Ms Steinfort, that will create a considerable problems in the future.

"They won't have the commitment to a job. They won't have any financial stability. They can't take a loan out on a house, they cant make any future plans; they are often kicked out of rental accommodation and can end up homeless"

But the problem doesn't stop there; Cate says it could flow on, creating a recurring cycle, an unskilled underclass

"It's called intergenerational unemployment. If they have children, then their children won't have a role mode, therefore won't be able to hold a job down either because they didn't see a working role model in the house"

It's a problem Adam does not want to be part of.

"Yeah I've had enough of it. It just gives you no stability, you just don't know if you're going to have work next week or not"

Adam is studying a pre- apprentice course at TAFE and one day hopes to gain an apprenticeship as a builder.

"I'm just looking forward to a job where I can roll up everyday, know what I'm expecting, see the same people and get to know a trade so I've got some skills"

"If the governments are looking at a pure economic outcome it is much better having a more trained less casualised work force because it actually costs the society less in the long term", Cate says

Cate feels the problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

"The long term effect of a disengaged marganalised segment of society will have a very high cost on society and could see a massive rise in mental illness, abuse, social welfare and crimes."

At a time when market freedom is so firmly entrenched in Government policy, the road ahead could be a rocky one.

The Northern and Middle colonies were endlessly different in custom, religion, and values even though some of the same forces helped shape both of them. Religion deeply affected the colonies profoundly, however while it drew the New England colonies toward puritan values, it led the Middle Atlantic colonies more towards general religious toleration. Both sections of America had vaguely democratic thoughts but were not particularly democratic in policy. The economies of both areas were closely tied to religion. The social scene in the North and Middle Atlantic was church for most people with little else.

Both regions had colonies with Governors who were appointed by the king, especially in the early years, but they eventually elected their own governors in a really rough version of democracy The Middle Colonies tended to be more liberal than their northern counterparts due to the large numbers of religiously persecuted men and women who came there when they were not wanted elsewhere. This led to a more religiously tolerant government than England had at this time. The New England Puritan church system was directly responsible for the town meeting sort of democracy. This was not actual equality however since only the landowning churchgoing white men could participate in the government.

Religion affected the early American economy deeply. In the Middle Atlantic Colonies where having one super dominant religion was less common, religious issues played a smaller part in shaping the economy. The economy of the Middle Atlantic Colonies was all about grain and a bit of tobacco. Small farms were prevalent and skilled craftspeople were scarce. Most all of the colonists worked hard and prospered in the new world. Puritans used the Bible as an excuse to persecute the Indians and take their land. They said they were wasting the land by not farming it aggressively enough and they took it for their own gain in the name of God. Puritans even believed that wealth was a sign of being one of the elect.

Religion was very important in the social scene of the Northern and Middle Atlantic Colonies. Religion dictated what people ate, played, believed, and did in their free time, not to mention their political ideas. The New England Puritan beliefs encouraged people not to celebrate much of anything too much including love and Christmas. The social life of practically all New England colonists revolved totally around the church. Church services could be the most exiting part of a colonists week. Also church related celebrations like weddings and even funerals were social events for the isolated families. Religion shaped the Middle Atlantic social trends in much the same way. While unlike puritans they allowed card playing, dancing and frivolous things like that, their weeks often revolved around church in the same way.

Colonists lives revolved around their religion. In the New England area it was prevalently Puritan and in the Middle Atlantic region it was generally the less popular religions. All aspects of both sections were affected greatly by religion. It moved these sections, and all the individual colonies in totally different ways but religion was the driving force behind it.

"Discuss why it is increasingly important for the Australian business to expand internationally. Discuss the role of government assistance and incentives in supporting business to expand internationally."

There are many advantages expanding internationally.

A business could increase in sales and achieve new market by expanding overseas. A business making a particular product or service may find that its product has special international appeal. Ally Craft is a privately owned business on the Gold Coast involved in the production of a wide range of aluminium boats. Because of Australia's climatic factor, there is a seasonal decline of sales from late February to April. This is a disadvantage in the profit of the business. However, Ally Craft decided to export towards the Pacific Island market where their product is in higher demand because of the tropical climate of this region to maintain cash flow. The business increased in sales due to the new markets gained in Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and Fiji.

Expanding internationally enables a company to expand via diversification. The risks the business could encounter is reduced by relying solely on a limited market and starting new products or offering new services. Diversification was a step taken by CSR. CSR is a company originally incorporated in New South Wales. Its prime function was sugar refining. However, CSR became varied and diversified moving into building materials and later into resources. Establishing new activities and acquiring existing businesses in the US, New Zealand and other Asian countries achieved expansion which enabled diversification to take place.

Cheap College Papers on GLOBALISATION and GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES (Australia)

Some businesses expand to acquire resources and gain access to technology. Many resources are unavailable and difficult to obtain locally due to factors like the country's climate, geological structure and history. This is why some businesses often need to relocate part of their operations in other countries. The Perth make-up artist Rebecca Williams decided to go global from day one. "Germany had the technology we were looking for. They also understood our quality requirements better than others." (quoted from BRW May 1, 00 p.8). Her brand, Becca Cosmetics is manufactured in Germany, packaged in Italy, and assembled and distributed from Perth, where the company is based.

The government have traditionally accepted the role of addressing flaws in areas where the market fails to provide maximum outcomes, especially in the complex area of globalisation. 1. A connection-oriented protocol has some features that allow a person to know that it is a connection-oriented protocol. A connection-oriented protocol is a protocol that provides a virtual-circuit using flow control, acknowledgements, and other processes of guaranteeing data delivery(Tomsho 00.). Connection-oriented protocols are found at the transport layer 4.

. When a computer sends data, a person will start at Layer 7 of the OSI model, which is the application layer. Here is where the data is created and then it sends it to the presentation and session layers where all three add header information. Then the data is broken into smaller pieces by layer 4, transport layer. The transport layer adds the TCP header and the data is now called a segment. Each segment is sequenced in order for the data stream to be put together again when it reaches its destination. Then the segments are handed to the network layer. The network layer adds its header of logical addresses, or IP addresses. With all of the previous layers headers and information and the addresses the segment is now called a packet. Once the IP addresses have been added the packet is sent to the data link layer . The data link layer is responsible for taking the packets and actually putting them on the physical medium. But, before it sends them off on the cable, it attaches the source and destination's MAC address, or the physical addresses of the computers. The data link layer also LLC and FCS for error checking and protocol identification for when the packets arrive at the destination. Finally, the packets are then turned into binary and sent out on the network.

4. The Trace command helps determine the path data takes on a network. This is handy when you want to trouble shoot a network, for it allows you to see how far the data needs to go to get to the destination and how long it took to get there. This command also tries to resolve the name of a responding router, which will help you when you want to find the actual location or name of a company that controls the router(Tomsho 60). The ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) sent by a computer usually are for when a datagram cannot reach it's destination, or when the gateway does not have the buffering room needed to forward a datagram, and the gateway can tell the sender to send data on a shorter route. Typically you receive ICMP messages when there are errors in the processing of datagrams and a host is not able to send its data to the receiving station.

5. It is estimated that 0% of all viruses now come in the form of email attachments (Kaminski). The viruses are getting harder to detect as is the case of the virus Nimda. Nimda was hard to control because it used it's own email client code and did not need a host email client to send itself (Kaminski). There are ways to avoid getting and spreading viruses. For example, install virus detecting software on all desktops and servers. A person should also use common sense when opening email. If you do not recognize the sender do not open the email. There are emails which claim, if opened, to remove viruses on your computer, which are themselves the virus (Tomsho 61). Again, if you do not recognize the sender, delete the message. It is important to keep the virus scanning software updated, as there are new viruses coming out on an almost daily basis.

Friendship is a bond between two people that usually is not broken. The meaning of friendship is displayed in the classic novel, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck. Lennie, one of the main characters, has the mind of a child and a body of Superman. George, the other main character, is the smarter one and usually gets Lennie out of the trouble he's always in. The only things these two friends have are each other. After running afoul of the law, the two men end up in California where they get jobs on a large ranch run by Curly, the owner's vicious son. When Lennie accidentally kills Curley's wife, Mae, George realized that if he kills Lennie before Curley, all of the pressure would be off of him.

Their friendship is more like a parent and child relationship; Lennie is always depending on George, as a child would depend on their parent. George finds himself in a lose-lose situation, unless he kills Lennie. "...God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live life so easy. I could get a job, an' work, an' no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want." Pg. 10. George always mentions throughout the entire story up until Lennie dies that he would be much happier and life would be much easier if Lennie was not around. The responsibility of taking care of Lennie was becoming a burden on George, so he found it easier by just killing him.

George and Lennie started their parent and child relationship when Lennie's Aunt Clara died; they were friends before that, but the death brought them closer. "Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just came along with me out workin'. Got kinda used to each other after a little while." Pg 7. George expresses how he was a friend to Lennie, but Lennie followed him so that's why they're best of friends. He feels obligated to keep Lennie around. Yes, maybe sometimes it was fun for George to have Lennie around, but in reality he didn't want to take on the responsibilities his Aunt Clara left. "I used to have a hell of a lot of fun with 'im. Used to play jokes on 'im 'cause he was too dumb to take care of 'imself. But he was too dumb even to know he had a joke played on him. I had fun...I've beat the hell outta him, and he coulda bust every bone in my body jus' with his han's, but he never lifted a finger against me." Pg. 8. In that quote, George is making it pretty clear that he has Lennie around to make a fool of him. The only thing he wants Lennie around for is for his own excitement.

Help with essay on Of Mice and Men

When George kills Lennie, he finally realized how flexible their friendship really was. "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain't no good. They don't have no fun. After a long time they get mean. They get wantin' to fight all the time." Pg. 8. Now George is finally realizing that without Lennie he'll become a mean old man.

George tries to make it seem as if he didn't want to kill his "best friend", someone he said he could not live without. It was George's decision to take on the responsibilities of Lennie and he did. If he did not want to, he did not have to. He wanted the responsibilities at first, but after he found out how difficult they were he decided he couldn't handle them, which lead to Lennie's death.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Review

This novella is set in England in a common rural farm area. It is a classified as a fantasy, because the animals are personified and appear to have the same average intelligence as humans. The story begins with the animals of Manor Farm stage a revolution against the farmer in control, Mr. Jones. This idea is put forward by the most senior and respected pig on the farm, called Major, as a vision for the future. The leadership of the farm in then voted to the pigs, which are agreed to be the most intelligent animals on the farm. The most outspoken pigs, Snowball and Napoleon take charge of the farm and are joint leaders, in a democratically run system. As the story progresses, Snowball is run off the farm by Napoleon and branded as a traitor and a hindrance to the animal's freedom and prosperity. He is said to be in league with the hated Mr. Jones. The democratic government breaks down, and a new order, not unlike communism, is brought in, with Napoleon as the sole leader. The rules agreed, and set by all the animals at the beginning of the newly renamed Animal Farm are changed to suit the pigs' needs, regardless of the other animal's work for them. This is done without their understanding. The novella ends with the pigs being unrecognizable and morphing into humans.

‘Animal Farm' shows how communism works in theory as a fair and just system. . It, however, fails to take in the greed and selfishness seemingly built into every human being. In ‘Animal Farm' this is shown as Snowball's chalk drawing of the windmill, the animal's highest goal. The blueprint looks impressive and is said to be a fine piece of architectural work, although few of the animals understand what the plans mean. Communism cannot work unless the leader appointed is inhuman in his ability to put others before himself. This is reflected in George Orwell's novella as the animals start out with good intentions, but in the end fail to set up their own fair system. This is a mistake made everyday in human society also. The fact that the pigs used deception, violence and the other animal's ignorance to their advantage is another trademark of a communist regime.

Do my essay on "Animal Farm" by George Orwell- Review CHEAP !

Although the animals seem to have human intelligence, only one has a pessimistic attitude. This is Benjamin the donkey, and he is the only one who foresees what will happen to the farm if they try to take over. This sets a dismal tone to the book, seemingly suggesting that the only attitude that is a true reflection of today's society is a pessimistic one. This might have been true of the time the book was written, although the world has changed a lot since the time of the Second World War, humans continually make mistakes in regard to government.

This book is a true reflection of the dangers of communism. It shows that the victims of this regime are often the most innocent and hardworking, as in the case of Boxer. It also suggests that good intentions are not a cure for selfishness and greed. ‘Animal Farm' was written by a man who originally believed in the concept of communism, but then learned that no matter how hard you try, you cannot overcome man's selfishness. Although the animals fail to make a fair and just communistic government, George Orwell unmistakably wanted to show that the story was a reflection of mankind's own failures. This is clearly shown in the ending when the tyrannical pigs are indistinguishable from humans.

It was Friday night, and I was an eleven-year-old kid who was bored and had mischief on his mind. I invited some friends, older kids to come over and play some video games, some older kids. Yeah, so I thought of my self as pretty cool to be hanging out with older kids. My buddies Paul, Dustin and Jeremy came over. Paul was a fourteen year-old rebel without a cause. He was tall for his age and was even sprouting some facial hair. He was a Fast kid, we nicknamed him Speedy Gonzales. Dustin was a little guy for his age. He was fifteen and quite certain he had the answer to everything, but he was cool though because he was 4 years older than me. Jeremy was fourteen also, although nothing too extraordinary about him. He had a huge nose though and I am not kidding! Some said he should declare that thing as his own country, it was that massive.

We were all kicking it in my room playing some hardcore Mortal Combat. Of course I was kicking everyone's ass. Paul was getting a little bored with playing games so he suggested that we did something crazy that night. We were all up for that, so Paul went to his house and came back with a water balloon launcher.

The next thing I knew we were stationed on top of my roof getting ready to launch grapefruit and eggs at whatever target we thought we could hit. Paul put the first grapefruit in the middle of the launcher while Jeremy and Dustin held the ends to steady the shot. Paul pulled back as hard as he could, than with out any warning, SNAP! The grapefruit soared over my fence, past the street smacking the top of a house directly across from our position.

Cheap University Papers on young and dumb

"Kick Ass!" Paul shouted out.

This feeling of excitement just charged through my whole body like a lighting bolt. Now it was my turn, my time to shine, to show these guys what I was really made of. I grabbed an egg, looked at everyone around me and made sure they noticed that it was me who was going to take the shot. Paul looked at me with eyes of encouragement. This was the time when I became a man. I loaded that egg in the flap of the launcher, Paul and Jeremy held the ends and I pulled back as hard as my muscles could pull, using every ounce in my little body. SNAP! The egg was airborne! The egg traveled low, barely clearing the fence only to hit its final destination, a passing car. SMACK! The egg splattered right on the driver side window. The car slammed on the brakes and came to a screeching stop. "Holy Shit" was all that was going through my mind.

"Run," Paul screamed!

We all leaped off my roof and dashed for my back door, throwing it open. I went straight to my room while my friends ran to their houses. I slammed the door behind me and sat in the corner wishing I could just disappear. My heart was going a million miles per hour. Just then I heard the doorbell ring. I could of died right there from fear alone. I could hear my dad going for the door and it seemed like he was there for a century. I could not think of a single moment in my whole entire life when I had been this afraid for my life!

The next few days consisted of a lot of time under the sun. Turns out the car I hit just happened to be the only rental car passing through Adobe Road that day, making my little predicament only worse. After I was lectured for what seemed like hours by my dad, I was given the punishment for my hideous behavior. To pay off the car wash needed to clean up the disaster, I was sentenced to yard work. I tried to decide if hanging with the older kids was worth all these horrible consequences I could no longer take back. With every weed I pulled and leaf I raked, I thought maybe I will hang out with kids my own age.

Freedom of Speech

Racism, sexism and homophobia is growing on college campuses around the

country. In response, many universities have adopted policies that

address bigotry by

Cheap University Papers on nada

placing restrictions on speech. The alternative to such restrictions, many

administrators

argue, is to allow bigots to run rampant and to subject their targets to a

loss of equal

educational opportunity. The power of a university to eliminate bias on

campus

ultimately depends not on its ability to punish a racist speaker, but

instead on the depth

of its commitment to the principles of equality and education. Many

universities, under

pressure to respond to the concerns of those who are the objects of hate,

have adopted

codes or policies prohibiting speech that offends any group based on race,

Thats the wrong response, well-meaning or not. The First Amendment to

the

United States Constitution protects speech no matter how offensive its

codes adopted by government financed state colleges and universities

amount to

government censorship, in violation of the Constitution. And the ACLU

believes that

all campuses should adhere to First Amendment principles because academic

freedom

is a bedrock of education in a free society. No social institution is

better suited to fight

bigotry than the university. It can do so in its courses and perhaps most

importantly

through the way it conducts itself as a community. Were not talking

about choosing

between the First Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment. Were talking

about

choosing between regulating speech and regulating action. Murder is

illegal. Talking

about it isnt. Freedom of thought and expression is particularly

important on the

college campuses. The educational forum is where individuals come

together to

participate in a process of shared inquiry and where the success of that

endeavor

depends on an atmosphere of openness, intellectual honesty and tolerance

for the ideas

and opinions of others, even when hateful or offensive. Compromising free

speech

ultimately threatens the rights of minorities. All too often, regulations

on speech are

used to silence the very people they were designed to protect in the first

place. As

Eleanor Holmes Norton has said It is technically impossible to write an

anti-speech

code that cannot be twisted against speech nobody means to bar. Free

speech rights

are indivisible. Restricting the speech of one group or individual

jeopardizes

everyones rights because the same laws or regulations used to silence

bigots can be

used to silence you. Conversely, laws that defend free speech for bigots

can be used to

defend the rights of civil rights workers, anti-war protesters, lesbian

and gay activists

and others fighting for justice.

The U.S. Supreme Court did rule in 14, in a case called Chaplinsky vs.

New

Hampshire, that intimidating speech directed at a specific individual in a

face-to-face

confrontation amounts to fighting words, and that the person engaging in

such

speech can be punished if by their very utterance [the words] inflict

injury or tend to

incite an immediate breach of the peace. If a white student stops a

black student on

campus and utters a racial slur. In that one-on-one confrontation, which

could easily

come to blows, the offending student could be disciplined under the

fighting words

doctrine for racial harassment.

Banning expressions of hate does not make them go away. If we allow them

to

be expressed and then each of us takes the individual responsibility to

voice our

disgust, opposition, annoyance and why, then we will educate many others

to why

certain ideas are abhorrent. Discussion is the best silencer because it

reeducates not

just the perpetuator of hate, but those who are observing it

There were several conflicts throughout the delightful narrative in Beauty. In the beginning, the inner struggle within the heroine Beauty is quite evident. Her self-conflict in thinking herself very plain next to her two lovely sisters results in low self-esteem and insecurity. More than once, she refers to herself as looking like a ¡°scullery maid¡± or as a ¡°drab little sparrow¡± with a peacock¡¯s tail. (18). Furthermore, a slight family feud takes place after Beauty¡¯s father receives an ultimatum after stealing the Beast¡¯s rose. Either he or one of his daughters must become the Beast¡¯s prisoner. Mr. Huston states that it was his own fault and that ¡°none other shall pay for it¡± (76). However, Beauty insists that she will go and pleads with her father to be allowed to save his life. He relents, though he says heavily that she asks an ¡°impossible thing¡± (7). Most significantly, the main conflict is between Beauty and the Beast. The ugly Beast asks her to marry him every night at dinner, but Beauty cannot imagine becoming his bride. She resists him and his enchanted world at first, yet finds that it becomes harder and harder to give the daily ¡°no.¡± In spite of that, her sympathy blossoms into a love strong enough to break the magic.

The basic plot has a simply laid-out crisis and climax. When Beauty returns to the spellbound castle after a weeklong visit to her family, she finds the Beast dying. A great tragedy, since she¡¯s only found out that she is fonder of the gentle being than she realizes. Though exhausted and filthy from her lengthy ride, Beauty begs the Beast to awake. He does open his eyes but nevertheless declares, ¡°I cannot live without you, Beauty¡± (1). The golden moment and the highlight of the story dawns when the Beauty gushes, ¡°This is what I have to tell you then. I love you, and I want to marry you¡± (). An explosion of light transforms her beloved Beast to a handsome gentleman. The newfound couple receives Beauty¡¯s family and gives every indication of living happily ever after.

A fairy-tale like ending to the novel gives both satisfaction and puzzlement. The traditional story line of Beauty professing her love and restoring the Beast to human form is familiar and comforting. No unexpected or surprising twists can be found here. After the exhilarating roller coaster ride in exploring the unconventional character of Beauty and her entertaining life, this steady ground is welcome. In addition, the most important questions the reader has are answered. Can Beauty tame this Beast? Will the Beast ever regain his true form? What will become of Beauty¡¯s dear family? The audience will find sufficient material to quench the thirst of curiosity at the curtain¡¯s close. On the other hand, the ambiguousness of the last few pages leaves too much room for the imagination to wonder. The small gaps are here and there. Although the mysterious conclusion creates drama and flair, the reader does not come to know what happens to the characters¡¯ everyday lives now that this great event has taken place. An epilogue is definitely in order. This irresistible novel would be much better off not leaving loose ends behind.

Gangs are a violent reality that people have to deal with in cities of every size. Gangs are not a new phenomenon in America. Mainly youths, have banded together for reasons ranging from protection to those who just want to occupy time, fill emptiness in their lives, or experience some sense of belonging. Whatever the reason, whena gang emerges communities almost always suffer the consequences. With the widespread popularity of gangs in the recent years, it seems as though no city has been left untouched by their violence and corruption.

There are many social factors that may contribute to why kids may find it so glamorous to join a gang. One of these social influences comes from television and movies. Children are fascinated by the blood and gore that they see through the media. When adults see violence on television, we look past all the blood and concentrate on the pain that the victim must feel. Children do not have that same connection. emotionally they become immune to the violence and it becomes acceptable. Once the idea that violence is an acceptable behavior has been instilled in the minds of these young children, they become increasingly prone to being easily pushed into a gang situation. Society has allowed the media to portray violence as a norm which in turn produces children who feel that their actions are justifiable because they saw it in a movie. TV, movies, music and video games all contribute to the desensitizing of human life and human worth.

Another social factor of why kids choose to join gangs is because they are lacking prental guidance and love. We live in a society where both parents have to work outside of the home. We leave these children at h ome unsupervised and neglected. Often times, it is the children who feel neglected that turn to gangs to find some sense of belonging. Itr is these children who feel deprived of attention and love that allow gangs to take the place of their famiy. It almost seems as though parents feel that putting food on the table is enough to raise a child. One scary statistic that I read reports that gang affiliation begins aroun seventh or eigth grade. Peer pressure at this age is so strong and gangs offer these children the support that they need to deal with it. An insecure kid that joins a gang suddenly finds himself to be the center of attention. lack of parental involvement ina childs life creates a boid that children would do anything to fill, even if it meant turning deliquency to gain the attention.

The third social factor that I want to address is peer pressure. Peer pressure is not discriminatory. It happens to everyone, in every city and school. Our culture emphasizes the standrds set by others. The pressure to conform to our surrounding is evident with every decision we make. To some, being in a gang means you have a higher social status. You are respected by everyone, as well as feared by everyone. There are certain areas of our world where joining a gang may be the only way to surivie. People in low rent areas are most often being repressed due to poverty and sometimes even race. Peer pressure is what pushes many people to make choices, even when they know that their decision may not be in their best interest.

I believe that each of us needs to responsibility for our own children and make them a priority. We need to keep informed of our childrens activities, and more importantly keep open communication with them. I feel that if our kids know we love them unconditionally, it may raise their self-esteem enough to say, Its okay if I dont conform. Maybe then our children will be able to reject the propaganda of gang memers and make choices based on values and what is right.

The Greek theatre is a crucial part of architectural history and how sporting venues are built today. The theatre provided entertainment to the citizens of Greece just as sports arenas do today. For example, the existence of the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, relies heavily on the Greek theatre and how it was constructed.

The Greek theatre took shape in the late fifth century. It is made up of four basic parts. First, is the skene, which was a structure built in the background that would house props, costumes, and dressing rooms. The next part of the theatre is the proskenion. This was built in front of the skene as a backdrop façade. It was not used for a stage and was one-story in height. The third part is the orchestra. This area was designated for the singers, dancers, and dramatic action. The shape of the orchestra was circular. The last part of the theatre is seating for the audience which is called the auditorium. The ring of seats were cut into the side of a hillside providing optimal viewing for a mass of people.

The theatre brought forth entertainment for the citizens of Greece. The stories of love and tragedy provided excitement and joy to the audience. Also the theatre was a celebration of religion and civic beliefs. These celebrations were attended to by everyone. They tended to be poetic and musical. The profound religious feeling of the Greeks for the earth and sky was highly shown in the theatre. The greatest theatrical performances hoped to contest with the natural spectacles.

The SkyDome in Toronto, opened in 18, is one of the most famous stadiums of all time. Its fully retractable roof makes it a stand out venue. But, there are many similarities to the Greek theatre. When the SkyDome is set up for a concert, there are four basic parts to construction. First is the backstage, which is a building, built on the rear of the stage for dressing rooms. In front of that is the stage. The stage is set up very high so everyone can see. Next is the floor seating. The floor seats are set very close to the stage in order to obtain the most personal experience. The last part of the SkyDome is the general seating section. The general seating is made up of five different sections. They are the Esplanade, which is from ground level up to the club level, Club level, 110 Amenity SkyBokes on two levels and the SkyDeck. The seats are arranged similar to that of the Greek theatre. The seats are built in tiers and in a circular pattern around the stage and can hold about ,000 people.

The classic Greek theatre paved the way for the future of architecture. The parts of the SkyDome are very similar to that of the Greek theatre. With the auditorium relating to the general seating and the skene relates to the backstage. Concerts performed on stage in the dome are just like the ones performed in the theatre. The singers and dancers perform on the stage to the many thousand spectators seated circularly around the stage. Thus, the existence of the Greek theatre proves to be a very crucial part of architecture today.
