College is just like a dream. It will involve things that people have dreamed of in high school. It will be lots of fun, but there are other things to care for such as academics. Things like freedom, academics, social life, finances, and athletics. College will determine people’s career, and it all will depend on how hard everyone works. Not everyone will be successful in college, but it is a place that everyone will experience and discover lots of new things. College is like a long party with a little bit of seriousness.

The main good thing about college is that everyone will have total freedom. In dorms, there are no bed and lights out times in dorms like at Saint James. But, one will have to have responsibility of going to bed at the right time to prepare for classes the next day. Also, there are no room inspections and no one will be required to keep the room clean. Going to class can be a problem with all this freedom. If one chooses not to attend a class, no one is going to prevent that from happening. However, people will need to learn to have be serious and have responsibility. Having freedom and control of over one self is really great, but it would not be good if everyone loses responsibility and end up failing out of college.

Academics are also a big part of college and freedom is also included in academics. No one will be forced to take certain classes to graduate. There are exceptions, but people will choose in what they want to major. Also, the class subjects are more advanced than high school class subjects. Most advance classes anyone can take in high school are advanced placement classes, which is a college course and there will be subjects that will surpass way beyond that level. People will get freedom to schedule their own class, time-wise. For example, my friend’s brother is in college in New York and taking only one class a day around noon. Everyone’s career will most likely depend on their academics success. It will depend on how well one does, so people will need to think about that before they go off to a party and pass out. Everyone should make sure not the make such bad mistakes that will ruin their academic work.

Social life is what everyone will experience the most since classes do not run all day. It is college, and there is going to be a lot of chances for everyone to drink at college, even though it might be illegal. So, it is all up to everyone to drink or not. In college, there are going to be lots of parties and even though they are in the middle of the night, no one will stop anyone from going.

College will not be free of cost, and it will never be free. Tuition in college is very expensive and not everyone is able to afford that tuition. One way to bring down the high price tuition in college is getting a scholarship. There is going to be a big price difference in tuition whether people are going to in-state or out-of-state colleges. Since everyone will be on their own, they will have to learn how to manage money. If not, that person will end up broke and that will be very awful. After the tuition, there will be books everyone needs to buy for their classes. Books are required in classes, and everyone will have to buy them and books cost lots of money. Damaging school property can also cause one to lose money. So, it would be a good idea to leave school property alone such as dorms, desks, and all that.

Athletics will be very competitive in college, such as National Colligate Athletic Association. NCAA will provide fun games to students in college. From going to NCAA games, people might build up school spirit by cheering and also, everyone will be proud of their school if their school does well in the league. And, there will be much more sports in college than high school.

People will come from everyone around the world to go to college in the United States. Since people come from everywhere around the world, people will have different cultures. There are lots of people at college, and not everyone will have same personality as others. Just like high school, college can have different groups of people such as thugs, jocks, nerds, preps, etc. Since all everyone will see is new people, everyone has lots of opportunity to make plenty of new friends.

College combines lots of things and it is fun, but people will also need to be serious regarding their career and for their own good. Freedom can also be a bad thing in college because it might lead people off to bad things and could cause them to fail. So, academics are the effects everyone needs to consider and know that college is not all about fun. I do not think anyone would like to see the face of their parents after getting kicked out of college.

The main protagonist, a member of the nouvelle bourgeoisie who lives up to the values of the former French colonists, marries his third wife - but in the wedding night he loses his virility. Whatever he tries to regain it - he is not successful until he returns to his own roots which are the roots of his people. A remarkable novel which shows a completely different world.

I have seen the movie XALA not read the book.....

and I was not impressed by it. The depth of the issues was not tackled in a deep soul seaching way. Much as the movie was done more that 0 years ago, the issues are the same today. It is sad that in such a polygamist setting the voices of the women was not actually heard effectively. The Male character was not given a chance to develop and give a good justfication for taking a second wife or even a third wife, instead it was just presented as greed... simple selfish greed, which i found utterly simplistic and patronizing. I am sure there is more to this story than that. Its nevertheless kind of refreshing.

The Greek theatre is a crucial part of architectural history and how sporting venues are built today. The theatre provided entertainment to the citizens of Greece just as sports arenas do today. For example, the existence of the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, relies heavily on the Greek theatre and how it was constructed.

The Greek theatre took shape in the late fifth century. It is made up of four basic parts. First, is the skene, which was a structure built in the background that would house props, costumes, and dressing rooms. The next part of the theatre is the proskenion. This was built in front of the skene as a backdrop fa├žade. It was not used for a stage and was one-story in height. The third part is the orchestra. This area was designated for the singers, dancers, and dramatic action. The shape of the orchestra was circular. The last part of the theatre is seating for the audience which is called the auditorium. The ring of seats were cut into the side of a hillside providing optimal viewing for a mass of people.

The theatre brought forth entertainment for the citizens of Greece. The stories of love and tragedy provided excitement and joy to the audience. Also the theatre was a celebration of religion and civic beliefs. These celebrations were attended to by everyone. They tended to be poetic and musical. The profound religious feeling of the Greeks for the earth and sky was highly shown in the theatre. The greatest theatrical performances hoped to contest with the natural spectacles.

The SkyDome in Toronto, opened in 18, is one of the most famous stadiums of all time. Its fully retractable roof makes it a stand out venue. But, there are many similarities to the Greek theatre. When the SkyDome is set up for a concert, there are four basic parts to construction. First is the backstage, which is a building, built on the rear of the stage for dressing rooms. In front of that is the stage. The stage is set up very high so everyone can see. Next is the floor seating. The floor seats are set very close to the stage in order to obtain the most personal experience. The last part of the SkyDome is the general seating section. The general seating is made up of five different sections. They are the Esplanade, which is from ground level up to the club level, Club level, 110 Amenity SkyBokes on two levels and the SkyDeck. The seats are arranged similar to that of the Greek theatre. The seats are built in tiers and in a circular pattern around the stage and can hold about ,000 people.

The SkyDome is a big economic contribution to Toronto. It houses two professional sports teams that bring in huge revenues. Also many concerts are performed there adding to the financial wealth of the city. The citizens of Toronto are also affected by the SkyDome. It provides entertainment to the people just as the theatre did to the people of Greece.

The classic Greek theatre paved the way for the future of architecture. The parts of the SkyDome are very similar to that of the Greek theatre. With the auditorium relating to the general seating and the skene relates to the backstage. Concerts performed on stage in the dome are just like the ones performed in the theatre. The singers and dancers perform on the stage to the many thousand spectators seated circularly around the stage. Thus, the existence of the Greek theatre proves to be a very crucial part of architecture today.

Fit, Equifinality, and Organizational Effectiveness

GSL 60

Melissa Blankenship

Fit, equifinality, and organizational effectiveness A test was written by D. Harold Doty, William H. Glick and George P. Huber in the Academy of Management Journal in December 1. The research was configurational which is a relative arrangement of parts or elements, or the results from a particular arrangement of parts or components. Both theories were tested to see if in anyway equifinality could be found. Equifinality is defined as having the same affect or result from different events or conditions in which different initial conditions lead to similar effects.

The article focused on two organizational theories of strategy, structure, and process. The first being Miles and Snow’s (178) theory based on and in-depth cross industry study of a relatively small sample of large companies. The theory that Snow and Miles developed was that there are three superior performing business types and all others were average or less than average. Miles and Snow’s theory holds that in order to be superior, there must be a clear and direct match between the organization’s mission, the organization’s strategies, and the organization’s functional strategies. These are the organization’s mission/values, their basic strategic set, and their characteristics and behaviors. Miles and Snow grouped their theory into types, which are Defenders, Prospectors, Analyzers, and Reactors. Defenders are organizations that focus on only one product or service, and ignore developments outside of its domain. Defenders are organizations that focus on only on product or service. Prospectors are organizations, which, almost continually search for market opportunities, thus causing their competitors to respond to the change that they create. Analyzers are organization’s which operate in

1

two types of product-market domains, one relatively stably, the other changing. Reactors are organizations in which top management perceive change and uncertainty occurring in their organization, but are unable to respond effectively. Reactors seldom make changes unless forced to do so by environmental pressures.

The second organization theory that Doty, Glick, and Huber tested was Henry Mintzberg’s Five Basic Parts of an Organization. Mintzberg grouped his theory in to parts and not into types as Miles and Snow had in their organizational theory. At the bottom of Mintzberg’s theory were the operating cores, which are the accounting, purchasing, and receivables departments with one manager. Mintzberg’s next basic part was the middle line manager, which is in charge of executing the organization’s mission. When organizations grow too large for one manager to handle all of its employee’s this created the middle line, which is the manager of managers. On each side of the Middle Line are Techno structure, which would be an organizations computer center, and Support Staff, which is an organizations Human Resources. At the top of Mintzbergs five basic Parts of an Organization was the Apex, which would be the President or CEO.

I could not find any bias on the part of the authors. The research done on the test of the two theories was followed accordingly to the structural design of research methodology.

I agree with the authors main theme of the research, whoever there was several methods used that I had a hard time understanding. When Mintzberg’s Five Basic Parts of an Organization was tested I reflected back to Dubrin when he stated that if an

organization strives to achieve their mission and goals then they must look at their structural design to determine if it is serving the organizations purpose to its fullest extent, and it must have an effective leader. DuBrin (001) described a working definition of an effective leader as an individual who through his actions with group members help attain productivity, quality, and satisfaction.

Mintzberg theory if much like the line and staff structure, which refers to the basic person boss relationship, or chain of command that extends from top to bottom of an organization On its most basic level organizational design is the design of dividing up work and assigning resources in such a way as to create value. The first component to a good organization is its most important resource, the people who make up the organization and their leadership style. However, within every organization whether formal or informal, people are still the main ingredient, and each organization has boundaries, or guidelines, that must be followed. These guidelines give structure to any organization. This structure identified how individuals were grouped into departments, and how departments fit into the organization as a whole. Organizational structure may be defined as a network of relationships that exist among various positions and position holders. Structural designs may include formal hierarchy of authority as well as rules and procedures and other planned attempts to regulate behavior. Formal structure can have a positive impact on morale when it helps us get our work done. It has a negative impact when it gets in our way or simply makes it easier for management to control us (Bolman and Deal 17). Hierarchical structures consist of vertical dimension of differentiated

levels of authority and responsibility. To determine which structure is best for an organization there are various contextual factors that help to determine which structure will work best, size of the organization, technology the organization possesses, and the environment that the organization originated. Size being the most powerful predictor of structure and formalization. Size also leads to greater difficulty for centralized control; therefore, it leads to decentralization, which needs a larger administrative staff. Organizations are also dependant on their environment. If an organization strives to achieve their mission and goals then they must look at their structural design to determine if it is serving the organizations purpose to its fullest extent.

Miles and Snow’s theory of Organizational Types was similar to that of Osland, Klob and Rubis’s (001) change process, which stated, “The first step is to determine the organization’s readiness for change. Is a change necessary and who perceives this need? (Pg 47). Osland, Kolb and Rubin used the formula C= (D x S x P) X, which explained that C=change, D=dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs or status quo, S=and identifiable and desired end state, P=a practical plan for achieving the desired end state, and X=the cost of change to the organization. Miles and Snow’s theory broke organizations into types of organizations that were either effective or less than average.

My impression of this article to the study of strategic leadership is I felt that it was very hard to understand. There may be other people in this program that could have understood this article better than I did. This is only my opinion but would not recommend this article for future MSSL classes, too much in depth mumbo jumbo for me.

Freedom of Speech

Racism, sexism and homophobia is growing on college campuses around the

country. In response, many universities have adopted policies that

address bigotry by

placing restrictions on speech. The alternative to such restrictions, many

administrators

argue, is to allow bigots to run rampant and to subject their targets to a

loss of equal

educational opportunity. The power of a university to eliminate bias on

campus

ultimately depends not on its ability to punish a racist speaker, but

instead on the depth

of its commitment to the principles of equality and education. Many

universities, under

pressure to respond to the concerns of those who are the objects of hate,

have adopted

codes or policies prohibiting speech that offends any group based on race,

gender,

ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

Thats the wrong response, well-meaning or not. The First Amendment to

the

United States Constitution protects speech no matter how offensive its

content. Speech

codes adopted by government financed state colleges and universities

amount to

government censorship, in violation of the Constitution. And the ACLU

believes that

all campuses should adhere to First Amendment principles because academic

freedom

is a bedrock of education in a free society. No social institution is

better suited to fight

bigotry than the university. It can do so in its courses and perhaps most

importantly

through the way it conducts itself as a community. Were not talking

about choosing

between the First Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment. Were talking

about

choosing between regulating speech and regulating action. Murder is

illegal. Talking

about it isnt. Freedom of thought and expression is particularly

important on the

college campuses. The educational forum is where individuals come

together to

participate in a process of shared inquiry and where the success of that

endeavor

depends on an atmosphere of openness, intellectual honesty and tolerance

for the ideas

and opinions of others, even when hateful or offensive. Compromising free

speech

ultimately threatens the rights of minorities. All too often, regulations

on speech are

used to silence the very people they were designed to protect in the first

place. As

Eleanor Holmes Norton has said It is technically impossible to write an

anti-speech

code that cannot be twisted against speech nobody means to bar. Free

speech rights

are indivisible. Restricting the speech of one group or individual

jeopardizes

everyones rights because the same laws or regulations used to silence

bigots can be

used to silence you. Conversely, laws that defend free speech for bigots

can be used to

defend the rights of civil rights workers, anti-war protesters, lesbian

and gay activists

and others fighting for justice.

The U.S. Supreme Court did rule in 14, in a case called Chaplinsky vs.

New

Hampshire, that intimidating speech directed at a specific individual in a

face-to-face

confrontation amounts to fighting words, and that the person engaging in

such

speech can be punished if by their very utterance [the words] inflict

injury or tend to

incite an immediate breach of the peace. If a white student stops a

black student on

campus and utters a racial slur. In that one-on-one confrontation, which

could easily

come to blows, the offending student could be disciplined under the

fighting words

doctrine for racial harassment.

Banning expressions of hate does not make them go away. If we allow them

to

be expressed and then each of us takes the individual responsibility to

voice our

disgust, opposition, annoyance and why, then we will educate many others

to why

certain ideas are abhorrent. Discussion is the best silencer because it

reeducates not

just the perpetuator of hate, but those who are observing it

Thomas Stearns Eliot otherwise known as T.S.Eliot was born in Missouri on the 6th of September in 1888 to Henry Ware a businessman and Charlotte Stearns Eliot a gifted poetess. Eliot attended Miss Lockes Primary School and Smith Academy in St. Louis. His first poems and prose pieces appeared in the Smith Academy Record in 105, the year of his graduation. He attended Harvard University, When he left the United States in 110 he had earned both undergraduate and masters degrees and contributed several poems to the Harvard Advocate. He returned to Harvard after a year in Paris to study philosophy, But returned to Europe in 114, settling in England and marrying Vivienne Haigh-Wood on June 6, 115,.

While in Europe he settled in London working as a teacher then later working in a bank, There, on September , 114, through a Harvard classmate and fellow poet, he met Ezra Pound, who would exert a great influence over the development of his work and his literary career. Eliza Pound assisted in the publication of his work. “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” published in Poetry in 115, The love song of J Alfred Prufrock devise on a wide range of symbols and images to represent a chaotic modern world . The first poem in basically in the form of a dramatic monologue where the speaker is talking to his alter ego, Prufrock , a man like his peers feels isolated and incapable of decisive action to vocalize his thoughts. To reflect Prufrocks stream of consciousness , Eliot uses a method he calls the objective correlative by which he dramatizes sensations , emotions and feelings through a set of objects , a situation and a chain of events . The love song of J Alfred Prufrock was included in his first book Prufrock and Other Observations which was published in 117 and established him as a leading poet.

Eliot also did a good deal of book reviewing and public lecturing, largely for financial reasons. He taught school briefly in 115 and 116, then worked in Lloyds Bank for several years beginning in 117. He would not achieve permanent, congenial, financially secure employment until he joined the publishing firm of Faber & Gwyer (later Faber & Faber) in 15. The stress and exhaustion of his overwork--as well as the tensions of his marriage, which had been a difficult one for both partners from the beginning--brought him to a nervous collapse in 11. During his recuperation at a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, he finished writing The Waste Land, a poem of more than four hundred lines. Within The Waste Land published in 1 Eliot describes the harsh reality of post world war one England, He also makes references to the working classes struggle, “The broken finger nails of dirty hands” The Waste Land, was Eliots first long philosophical poem, can now be read simply as it was written, as a poem of radical doubt and negation, urging that every human desire be stilled except the desire for self-surrender, for restraint, and for peace. Compared with the longing expressed in later poems for the eyes and the birth, the coming and the Lady (in The Hollow Men, the Ariel poems, and Ash-Wednesday), the hope held out in The Waste Land is a negative one.

Through The Criterion, a journal that he founded in 1 and edited until its suspension in 1, and through his essays and volumes of literary and social criticism, Eliot came to exert vast influence as a molder of opinion. Despite his having written some of the most ultra-modern poetry of his time, his basic conservatism became increasingly overt, as shown in his famous declaration in 18, a year after he had become a British subject and had been confirmed in the Church of England, that he was a classicist in literature, royalist in politics, and anglo-catholic in religion.. By the 10’s Eliot was a dominant figure in poetry and literary criticism, as a poet he transmuted his affinity with the 17th century metaphysical poets and the 1th French symbolist poets, Eliot connected most of his earlier works to the French Symbolists whom he came into contact with through reading The symbolist movement in Literature By Arthur Symons. It can be assumed that Eliot sought to express his symbolic imagery in the same way the French symbolists have done it.

The Hollow Men is an episodic free verse poem. Eliot constructs a desolate world, “death’s dream kingdom”, to explore mankind’s avoidance from spiritual intention. The focus of the poem is on the hollow men’s inability to interact with each other. The techniques employed by the poet show this predicament. The title of the poem draws our attention to the importance of the collective personae. The hollow men represent all mankind, and their tragic existence, the poem suggests, concerns us all. The epigraphs bring to mind a range of associations the first, “Mistah Kurtzhe dead” is a reference to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, a novella inhabited by men whose actions are equally devoid of ideological or spiritual guidance; and the second, “A Penny for the Old Guy” is an allusion which highlights the impotency of humanity and the way in which our most critical actions may end in nothing more than a whimper.

T.S. Eliot’s poetry explores the predicament of human existence in the twentieth-century setting characterised by an overwhelming disillusionment of the younger post world war one generation and acceptance at his imperfectability. Accepting his Nobel Prize, Eliot commented, “poetry may make us a little more aware of the deeper, unnamed feelings which form the substratum of our being, to which we rarely penetrate; for our lives are mostly a constant evasion of ourselves”. He made use of a variety of aural and visual imagery and a remarkable breadth of content to evoke these feelings in the reader, and in doing so facilitates an exploration into the depths of our existence. In January 157, Eliot, married Valerie Fletcher, his secretary at Faber and Faber; he was sixty-eight years old, she was thirty. After a painful first marriage, followed by many years of guilt and loneliness, Eliot in the last years of life enjoyed an emotional and physical closeness that he had never known before. Unfortunately, his happiness would be short-lived. After several years of declining health, he died of emphysema at his home in London on January 4, 165, six days before his eighth wedding anniversary.

globalization of market is very important to our study of international business. for instance, consumer preferences for some products are converging around the world. SONY, NIKE, The GAP, CALVI KLEIN, COCA-COLA, and Mc Donalds are just a few companies that sell so-called global products-products marketed in all countries essentially without any changes. sometimes they make small modifications to suit local tstes. in southern Japan, for example, COCA-COLA sweetened its traditional formula to compete with sweeter-tasting Pepsi. in India, were cows are sacred and the comsuption of beef taboo, Mc Donalds markets the Maharaja Mac-two allmutton patties on a sesame-seed bun with all the usual topping.

GLOBALIZED PRODUCT ACTIVITIES. Today, many production activities are also becoming global. technology allows any products to be made practically anywhere it is cheapest to do so. Local, regonal, and national governments offer firms various incentives to construct factories, but can bring unemployment to another if, as a consequence, a factory in that location is closed.

For example, competing business hubs in Asia-such as Kuala Lumpur(Malaysia),Singapore, Shangai, and the Philippines Subic Bay-routinely entice global companies with favorable tax deals and subsidized rents and worker training.

The philippine government, once notorious for tying up investors from other countries in reams of red tape, recently paved the way for Federal Express and three other carrier to transform the former U.S naval base at Subic Bay into an Asia hub.

Trying to access my strengths and weaknesses is going to be a difficult task. The better a person knows himself or herself, the more exactly they can assess the areas that require additional personal development such as determining their strengths and weaknesses. To paint a true picture of where I am and where I want to be, I will have to be totally honest. There are certain areas of my personality and life that I will have to improve to reach my goals.

In order to decide my strengths I will have to first determine the areas that I am most competent and comfortable. I consider myself to be a well-organized individual. I start my day off at the office by reviewing my previous days productions. This allows me the opportunity to prioritize what needs to be completed by the close of the business day. I try to tackle projects in both my personal and business life in such a manner that they can be completed with efficiency. This saves me time and allows me to accomplish more.

I also feel that I have good people skills. I come into contact with many individuals that require my undivided attention (clients, customer service representatives, and co-workers) on a daily basis. Many of the situations I handle are over the telephone with angry managers who call me all the time with production issues. My people skills allow

me to handle any situation in a professional manner. This is valuable when employed in a customer service related field such as mine.

Also, I consider myself a team player. I often provide assistance to fellow employees when they are in a crunch. I do not feel that management appreciates me, for always lending a hand but that does not stop me form lending a helping hand when needed. I try to bring enthusiasm to all I do and I always have the best interest of the company at heart.

Teaching others has always been a strong suit of mine-especially when it comes to training. I feel satisfied knowing that I am able to make others comprehend something that they felt was foreign. I enjoy educating people on the job; it provides me with a sense of achievement.

Finally, I feel that I have a self-discipline quality. Believe me, when I am dealing with 50 different personalities who are repeatedly frustrated and taking it out on you, it takes a certain level of restraint not to lose you composure. This trait is also applicable in my personal life where I do not make frivolous purchases in order to afford better material items for my family.

On the negative side of the table, I do have a tendency to procrastinate. Not so much in my professional life, where I cannot afford to lose my job, but more so in my personal life. Because I gain more time from being organized in general, I find that I squander away a lot of time-causing me to wait until the last minute to begin a project. My family ironing project is a good example of where I procrastinate. The home environment is just

full of distractions such as televisions. There is always a reason to watch a little more television, play with the family, play video games, etc.

Another negative trait would be that I strive to be a perfectionist. When I do things I do them in a certain methodical way and I am not satisfied until they are just right in my eyes. When working on group projects, I get annoyed when I do not perform to the standards of others. I expect to put forth the same level of effort that they do and find myself losing patience when I don’t seem to have the dedication as others.

I have decided to use most of my free time to get more schoolwork completed. In other words-no more goofing off until I at least accomplish something due during the week. Afterwards, I will reward myself with something recreational.

I will also try to be more dedicated as a team member, especially at work and at school. I will try to share my ideas with greater enthusiasm. Instead of being critical of myself, I will try to be constructive and I hope to achieve results in the same manner.

It will not be an easy task, but I will monitor my own behavior as I travel the road of self-improvement. The results will help me to better myself as an individual and as a mother. These are my strengths and weaknesses.

The living nightmare

It was a perfect day as I walked up the mountain, with a cloudless sky overhead. As my climbing party and I reached the bottom of Mount Cheguva, the highest mountain in the world, I gazed up above and stared in amazement at the snow-capped peaks, and steep rocky paths covered with snowflakes. It seemed that one man alone could not conquer this mammoth creation of Mother Nature. I realized by the end of the day I could be in heaven, among many unknown species and uncharted valleys. At ten miles high, from this close, my reason for living seemed almost too big, almost.

It was pointed out to me, however, that the pitch-black well clouds known in this part of the world were on the horizon and a strong wind was beginning to howl in our ears. Oblivious to the many forceful warnings shouted in my direction, I began my long climb. Tiny snowflakes began to create a light powder, making the floor slippery and sticky with mud once it melted.

After traversing the moderately steep slopes near the bottom, I realized I had no idea of how long I’d been climbing. The snow fell heavy and began to lash my face and the howling wind was driving against me. I glanced at my watch and realized that I had been climbing for hours. It was late and conditions like these at night could mean death. I found a small overhang with cover from the howling wind and decided to lay my camp for the night as there was no way to turn back now, not in this weather.

Having sat down to rest, I suddenly realized how hungry I was. To my astonishment and horror, I discovered three gaping slash marks in the back of my bag, seemingly those from some sort of animal that lived in this place. I could feel the colour draining from my cheeks. I got out my food, although there was no hope of lighting a fire in this terrible weather. While I was gnawing at some of my now soggy turkey, I tried to remember whether I had seen any animal but could not remember seeing any. Not a single thing all the time, which was very unusual considering it, was one of the best habitats for bears, foxes and other mountain creatures.

To say the least, the holes in my bag had me very worried. There was not a trace of life on the entire mountain, another thing that troubled me. My clothes were saturated, and in this weather, that meant death. I couldn’t light a fire so I curled up and concentrated on keeping myself warm. The snow had turned into hail and drove down with uncontrollable force, lit dimly by the cracks of lightning and the whistle of the wind.

Out of the corner of my eye a movement caught my attention a mass of black. It must have been around ten feet tall. A crack of lightning, showed it was against the snow-covered background, then gone. I was scared out of my wits and began to pack my bag, giving up any hope of rest for the night. An ear splitting roar nearly knocked me- over the sheer force of it was so devastating. My ears ringing, and adrenaline flowing through my veins, I ran through the trees and ducked behind a boulder, hoping it would cover me from the creature’s view.

The next thing I noticed as I tried to gather my thoughts was that my surroundings were ominously quiet, like a ghost town No driving hail, no lashing rain, and no cracks of lightning. As I glanced to my right, I saw a jet black shape darting through the trees. A second later, and it was gone. I turned around as I came to halt and froze. My heart began to thump faster. This thing stood in front of me, two-inch teeth bared, blood shot eyes staring into mine. I recovered from the shock quickly enough to dodge the paw crashing down into the boulder, smashing it to pieces. I whipped round and fired my hunting rifle into the beast, before crashing into the snow. I may as well have been throwing stones for the effect it had on the creature. I couldn’t even see if the bullet had hit it.

I crawled to my feet and stumbled into a run. The beast was nowhere to be seen but the only thing on my mind was getting to the bottom of the mountain. I began to climb up a slight overhang. Just as my feet cleared the bottom, the creature’s claws raked against the rock. I levelled my rifle to its face and let my rifle fire directly into its jaw. This did have the desired effect, as the creature wheeled back and smashed to the floor.

Turning my back, I began climbing up the sheer rock face to escape, loose stones falling all around me. The sun was beginning to rise, casting a great shadow over the entire side of the mountain. I heard another scuttling of rocks down the mountainside and glanced down. To my horror, the creature was climbing straight after me. As I pulled myself over the edge, I crouched to the floor and began firing rounds in the direction of the beast. The majority of shots missed but those that hit their target were enough to make it slip on the loose stones and crash to the ground.

I decided to finish it now. Staring through my telescopic sight, I aimed right at its temple. I pulled the trigger. Click. Nothing happened. I did it again and, again nothing happened. With no ammo in it, I threw my now useless rifle to the floor and saw a large boulder. Putting all my strength behind it, I it rolled down the cliff, crashing directly in to the creature and sending it into the ice filled chasm below. Then, there was silence. I checked my body for wounds and, bleeding from every limb, pondered how to reach the bottom and safety. I ran as brisk as I could as I tumbled down the mountain. I had no self-control over myself, and before I knew I had collapsed forming a spherical shape.

Feeling weak, I began to open my eyes sluggishly. I wondered where I was. Moments later I heard something coming towards me, suddenly there was silence. I stood up to see what it was but nothing came into view. I sat back down. The sound then came back. I was petrified to know I was no longer alone. I moved closer trying to visualize who was there.

“Who is it?” No one replied. The only thing I could hear was the echoing of my voice. I could feel something breathing over me. I turned around to see what was there but there was nothing. As I gazed around something diverted my attention. I could not believe it at first and I began to rub my eyes slowly.

“How are you?” a booming voice came from the dark. I began to creep back slowly. Wondering what I was doing here. I was anxious and did not reply immediately.

My heart began to pump faster. “What am I doing here?” There was complete silence. It moved closer and spoke slowly; “ You were found lying on the ground. The rescue team found you brutally battered”

“Thank god”. I noticed a very peculiar ring on his fingerer. It was round and had two horns either side with a skull in the middle. But I did not ask any questions. “I think I’d better get some food” he spoke, and went. I thought long and hard that night about the ring but I did not take it seriously. After few hours went by he returned. “It is very cold out side don’t you think?” “Oh yes” I said. “It is very dark outside also a full moon so do not wonder off it is too dangerous” he spoke in a concerned voice.

Later that night the howling off the wolves grew louder which woke me from my sleep. I looked around wondering where he had gone, but he did not come into sight. In the far corner a shadow came into view. I leapt up and begun to walk forward.

“Stop right there” a voice came from the same direction. “Run as fast as you can, run!” it said. I tried running but it was no use the way was blocked. I turned around and froze.

A creature about seven feet tall and covered with hair and red eyes blinding me stood in front of me. It lifted me high up and spoke; “I am thirsty for blood”. I was powerless and did not know what to do. I realised it wore the same ring as other man who saved me. I realised to my amazement he was a blood thirst creature a ware wolf.

It gripped my throat and I fainted. I woke up the next morning battered and could not walk. I rested. I woke up as the sun begun to set. I opened my eyes and looked at my watch realising it was seven o’clock.

I realised I had the ring the ware wolf had I tried to take it off but I did not have the strength to. I looked straight at the moon and realised hair begun to grow on my chest, with large inhuman like teeth and red eyes with brown skin. I had realised I had transformed into a hideous creature and thirsty for blood.

RECOMMENDATION

We conclude that rightly Internet Securities has accepted the offer of $4 million for 80% of the company by Euromoney PLC. The offer covered the market value of the company which at the time of acquisition had a total post money valuation of around $50 million. Another favorable part of the deal was the fact that I.S. management has ensured the option at any given time to spin out the company and go public. In retrospect, the decision proved out to be correct since most of the dot-com companies who went public at that time, by 000 have lost on average more than 60% of their market value.

Apart from that, this deal represented not just incremental evolution, but a fundamental transformation of the company, to enhance its sustainability by teaming up with Euromoney PLC to block competition.

HISTORY

Cheap University Papers on INTERNET SECURITIES, INC. : BUILDING A BUSINESS IN INTERNET TIME

essay writing service

Internet Securities Inc. (I.S.) founded in June 14, by the brothers Gary and George Mueller. Their idea was to organize a company that provided hard-to-find financial, business and political information to business professionals, but with a focus to emerging markets where it was very difficult to find reliable information

Mueller brothers drew from a family with entrepreneurial spirit, which led the company at the beginning. Their initial investment was $145,000 from within their family circle.

The company started at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and start developing its technical infrastructure, while at the same time Gary Mueller start negotiated deals with information providers in Poland (Poland was the first emerging market that I.S. choose to enter).

Within six moths of the official product launch, the company began to struggle with issues of rapid growth and an increasingly complex business. The company grew from 6 people in June 15 to 10 by September 16. By 18, IS had grown from a single location in Poland to over 175 people in 18 offices around the world. IS approached several “angel “ investors to secure the funding of the company that would need to launch the service. Throughout the years from 15 to 18, the business was growing too fast and needed additional funding for the technical infrastructure as well as to add business value. Gary Mueller was seeking ventures for funding but from different types of investors. The first round was well-regarded from people financial or information services. The second and the third round was people with specific expertise and securing financing. With that model IS in spring 18 appears with a post-money valuation of $50 million with a price per share $10.

FIVE FORCES ANALYSIS

Customers

I.S. has limited bargaining power over their customers, since although they offer a differentiated product for business professionals which are based in both developed and emerging markets and are eager to gain access to accurate, reliable and up-to-the-minute information on the emerging markets sector, the nature of the product is highly imitable. I.S. offers information in a modular way with a series of increasingly valuable enhancements which drive the customers to a repeated purchase behavior. Nevertheless, there are large companies in the field of financial information providers (Reuters, Bloomberg, e.t.c) which if they want to can offer the same product at a more competitive price. Also these companies will be able to attract other companies more easily due to the fact that they have higher brand equity. Thus switching costs for I.S. customers are relatively low.

Suppliers

The key objective was to gather good information as quickly as possible and presented in a format that people wanted. I.S. had extensive and exclusive contracts with the information providers, but they were very difficult to be obtained. Moreover, while most online financial services charged information providers to sell their content, I.S. paid most of the information providers an average 15% of subscriber revenues.

Internal Competition

When Internet Securities was launched in14, they were considered among the earliest internet pioneers. The Muellers brothers had a vision that the internet would become an important channel for conducting business in the future. They hoped that early entry would give them the time needed to build their business before established competitors were ready to respond.

Direct competition includes all companies in the internet industry. These companies could potentially copy the IS services/products , which means that IS could be exposed to imitability ( i.e. emerging market information can be copied, substituted and leapfrogged by the competitors).

Indirect competition encompasses “brick-and-mortar” companies that in 14 had never heard of the internet and those that had, considered it a “toy for techies”. In 18, they have realized that they have to deal with the emergence of the internet.

Threats of new entrants

The threat of new entrants is extremely high because the initial investment is very low, the specific business model is imitable and switching costs for customers are low.

Threats of Substitute Products or Services

I.S. is facing the threat of substitute products or services like financial newspapers and magazines (ex. Wall Street Journal, The Economist) that offered from giant media companies and television financial shows (ex. CNN’s Insight show).

I.S. has a competitive advantage compare to the media giants and television shows; because, they provide up-to-the-minute online information

STRATEGY

The core strategy of Internet Securities Inc is focus. It provides specialized financial information for emerging markets through contractual agreements with ISP’s in these markets. It plans to recover financially in the future and become profitable by

• develop new products to meet needs of targeted customer groups (energy, telecommunications, financial services, pharmaceuticals) expand strategy

• increase country coverage expand strategy

• provide contract services for other companies extend strategy

Overall, I.S. plans to continue to leverage its customer base, infrastructure and market expertise in emerging markets to continue having its competitive advantage.

ALTERNATIVE 1

Proposal Internet Securities Inc. goes public

Analysis I.S. could follow other dot-coms and enlist for an internet IPO deal. This way, the company will be able to raise the much needed capital to further enhance its products and expand its presence in more countries. Analysts tended to look favorably on a subscription revenue model, and due to the fact that I.S. was mainly a BB company, it was sufficient to raise capital relatively easy.

Conclusion as we see from Exhibit 16, a lot of small/medium-size companies were not able to complete effectively an IPO. Also, from the same Exhibit we can deduce that the majority of them had a low TEV/LTM revenue. An outcome like this for our company would have a negative financial impact on our company and possibly reduce its market value.

ALTERNATIVE

Proposal Additional funding of Internet Securities

Analysis As done successfully in the past, I.S. could go back to venture capitalists or strategic investors for an additional round of funding. This way, the expansion strategy of the company could be realized and possibly by 001 start posting its first profits. On the other hand, from the financial data shown in Exhibit 14, I.S. has unfavorable cash flows for the years 18-1 and more worryingly declining revenue growth. In addition to that, Operating expenses increased approximately 50% between these years indicating inefficiencies in operations. A possible explanation could be the continuous geographical expansion, but without leveraging customer offerings/revenues to existing markets.

Conclusion We believe that it would be difficult at this stage to secure additional funding due to the unfavorable financial trends (cash flow, revenue growth, operating expenses, income).

ALTERNATIVE

Proposal Form alliance/venture/partnership with strategic established investor Euromoney PLC

Analysis Due to the fact that I.S. is a special type of focused distributor (Infomediary), which provides specialized financial info, it has all the usual characteristics of a successful vertical portal. On the other hand, Euromoney PLC is a well established brick & mortar company in the field of media. Its strength is based on its editorial content and support for the international finance community. Also, Euromoney PLC is a leader in publications for emerging markets, something which complements effectively with the services/products offered by I.S.

Nevertheless, both companies need each other to stay in business long-term. The reason is that due to the nature of the internet and its properties (low cost standard, creative destroyer, transaction cost reducer etc.), service offerings supplied by internet companies are easily imitable, which in effect reduces most barriers for potential new entrants. Internet companies need the complementary assets offered by traditional businesses (increased brand awareness, stream lined processes, consolidation of business processes, well established distribution channels) to effectively market their services/products. Euromoney PLC is such an organization which can successfully integrate I.S. Also I.S. cannot sustain its business long term due to the fact that in terms of profitability is not successful up to now.

Conclusion Although there is a plan for I.S. to become profitable in the future, this cannot be guaranteed. Therefore if the offer for acquisition is in line with shareholders’ expectations, then I.S. should accept it.

The most extraordinary aspect to Andy Warhol’s famous painting of Marilyn Monroe’s face is how he forms his own version of her. Marilyn Monroe’s face is very recognizable, and almost everyone knows what she looks like. Warhol succeeds in taking a famous face, and recreating it according to his own style.

The first thing I see when I look at this painting is large areas of colors. I see a green background, bright yellow hair, a pink face, green eye shadow, yellow eyes, red lips, a green mole, and a red area that appears to be her shirt. The second thing I see when I look at the poster again is black. I see black shading in the hair and around the face, black shading that creates the eyes, eyebrows and nose, black shading in the lips, and a black mole inside the green one.

Another thing I notice about this painting is how it gets smaller and more complex in the middle. The green background is large and has almost no detail to it. Then the large area of yellow hair has black shading that gives it movement and dimension. Next, the eyes, nose, and mouth are created within the pink heart-shaped face. Warhol uses black shading to create the eyebrows and eyes. He gives Marilyn green eye shadow and paints yellow in her inner eye. Her eyelids and eyelashes are thick, as if she is wearing black eyeliner and mascara. Her little nose is also created with black shading, and her mole consists of a black dot with a larger green dot imperfectly surrounding it. Her lips are full and seductive, and it looks as though Warhol outlined and colored her lips in with red paint, and then proceeded to shade them inside with black. He also shades a lot along the left side of her face, into her red blouse.

I notice how Warhol balances these two opposites, color and black, perhaps to highlight the two facets of Marilyn’s life. The colors that he uses are not true to form, but it works regardless. No one really has hair that yellow, a face that pink, or lips that red. Also, it seems rare to wear green eye shadow that bright or have yellow eyes. The effect of this exaggeration of colors is that it makes Marilyn look cartoon-like, and almost not real. This represents Marilyn’s public life. Externally, Marilyn led a glamorous life full of parties, celebrities, and wealth, but that was fake and overdone, just like the colors. Internally, however, her personal life was full of scandal, deceit, and heartache. This private side of Marilyn Monroe is evident through the black that forms her eyes. Though her lips do give off a sexy feeling, the shading and detailing around her eyes tell a deeper story. She looks sad and hurt, as if she is yearning for someone to help her. It is quite impressive how Warhol manages to accomplish that without losing his signature pop art style of bright colors and animated images.

The message that I get from this piece is that nothing is ever what it seems. Warhol uses vivid colors and dark shading to emphasize this idea. The large areas of color symbolize a happy exterior. Things may seem to be wonderful and great on the outside, but when given a deeper look, everything has some black on the inside.

According to Nahavandi there are five inter-dependent leadership principles

1. Guiding that involves

- Define “simple rules” that provide empowered direction for the organisation.

- Advocate and model the fundamental values of the organisation.

- Set challenging objectives that inject new pace and enthusiasm.

. Inquiring that involves

- Ask questions. Find out what is happening in and around the organisation.

- Explore ideas and possibilities by creating opportunities for the open exchange and development of ideas.

- Support relationship building in and beyond the organisation.

. Visioning that involves

- Tell the story of the future in a compelling and inclusive way

- Use metaphors to describe the “what” and “why” of the organisation, creating a sense of purpose for all.

- Walk the thought.

4. Encouraging that involves

- Promote learning through affirmative coaching.

- Create an environment where actions, attempts and options are reviewed and treated positively.

- Be open to risk and failure accept the fact that errors will occur.

5. Staying Open that involves

- Listen without prejudice.

- Accept and value the voices of dissent.

- Endure the scary moments and trust that ways forward will emerge.

Basically, the IS SURVIVAL GUIDE article is describing all those principles but in very ambiguous manner. I agree with author in many ways but don’t like the tone and 1-800-SAVE-THE-WORLD prescribed tactics. If I would have to write a similar article, I would try to be precise starting with theory of future leadership and going further on developing tactics with describing sample situations that are related to current economic situation. I would try to think of multiple scenarios with provided solutions in details.

This year more than 5 million Americans will receive training in CPR from either the American Heart Association, or the American Red Cross. However, this is not enough. Did you know that according to an article in Occupational Hazards Eighty percent of all cardiac arrest situations occur at home, and more than seventy percent of people who perform CPR do so for a loved one or a friend. What this means to you, is being prepared in this type of situation is crucial. CPR is a very valuable technique that everyone should not only know, but be certified to perform.

II. Why you should know CPR

While doing some of my research I ran across and article about a teenage girl who saved her father using CPR skills that she learned in her lifeguarding class. This article which appeared in Current Health Magazine, told the story of a high school sophomore who awoke in the early morning hours, to find her father unconscious without a pulse. Her mother told her that he had complained of chest pains earlier in the night. Assuming that her father had had a heart attack she began to administer CPR. When the paramedics arrived they administered electric shocks to his heart and were able to get a pulse. Before the paramedics left they told the teenager that she saved her fathers life.

Now I want you to imagine that you are in this situation. What would you do , if a loved one or friend lay dying before your eyes? If you knew CPR you could have easily done the same thing as the teenager in the story. However, if you were not certified in CPR you would probably wait helplessly for the paramedics to arrive.

CPR is also important to know for a variety of other reasons.

According to the article “How you can save a life with CPR”, cardio pulmonary resuscitation is especially important to know if you live with someone who has a heart condition or a history of heart problems. It is more than likely that this type of situation will occur while the person is at home.

Also, by knowing CPR you can dramatically increase a person’s chance of survival. According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, when CPR is administered early a persons chance of survival is increased by as much as 40 percent. Which helps to save thousands of lives annually.

Although CPR is a temporary solution to a serious problem, it keeps oxygen rich blood flowing to the brain, comes from The National Pool and Waterpark Lifeguarding Training Manual. Although you may not to resuscitate the victim completely you are still prolonging their live until Emergency Medical personnel arrive.

Now that I have bombarded you with all this information what can you do? The American Heart Association or the American Red Cross here in Bloomington- Normal offers courses on CPR which are very good. If you

don’t have time to make it to a class you can go online to www.learncpr.com which will familiarize you with CPR terms and show you the basic process.

Our next topic of discussion for today’s show will surround the controversy of the ‘Stolen Generation’.

Although this incident may have occurred many years ago, the traumatizing memories for those involved, are as vivid as the exact moment they occurred. The pain these individuals endured, still remains and for many, their lives have been turned up-side down.

The pain and agony that they experienced from being taken away from their families, has resulted in a long term affect on their lives and has caused confusion in trying to determine their true identity.

As strong as this issue may be it cannot be portrayed in a more powerful sense than the newly produced play ‘Stolen’.

Jane Harrison the writer of the play, has used the real life experiences of five Aboriginal people, showing the suffering and trauma experienced by each character escalating from their child-hood, following through to their adult-hood.

Throughout the play Jane uses the format of each character continuously switching from their adult-hood back to their child-hood, and vice-versa. By doing this we are shown flash-backs and memories of intense scenes portraying their distraught emotions and confusion of being taken away from their families and the treatment they endured.

I think through using the form of switching roles really captured significant emotions, experiences and events throughout different stages of each character’s life. This was a great portrayal of what each individual was feeling, how they dealt with these feelings and how their thoughts and experiences changed them as they got older.

Well In the beginning of the play, when we see the scenes of them as children, their thoughts and actions capture their sense of innocence. As they develop into adults, we see this sense of innocence slowly fade away.

Well for the first part of this segment we will focus on how each character dealt with the loss and grief of their experience of being taken away from their families and the life changing experience that followed.

Loss and suffering was an extremely strong and frequent factor which surrounded each of the characters throughout the play.

Lets take Ruby for example, her suffering was extremely evident and often portrayed through her silences and body language which made her scenes emotionally powerful.

Yes throughout the majority of the play Ruby’s deeper level of suffering is seen through her traumatising abuse. We see her first count of abuse in the scene ‘Unspoken abuse 1’, after returning from a weekend away with a white family. She returned with a disturbed presence, walking slowly into the scene, dragging a doll behind her.

Although Ruby doesn’t come out and tell us that she was abused, it is revealed to us through the ‘Patty Cake Game’ where the children are eager to find out about her weekend away. They ask her several questions to which she answers normally to , but when they ask her “What else did ya do?”, she replies with “I promised not to tell”, showing the betrayal of trust from her visit. This shows us that Ruby has been taken in by the secretive and oppressive depths of sexual abuse.

After Ruby is picked in the line-up numerous times, we begin to see the transition from her being a hopeful young girl, to feeling violated and lost. Which causes her to lose focus on life.

AND THEN…….

In the scene ‘Ruby comforting her baby’, she expresses her confusion and shame after being abused for the first time through talking and singing to her doll.

YEAH…….She sits there sobbing and rocking the doll, as if to capture the idea of the doll being herself.

I SUPPOSE…….. This is her way of comforting herself and dealing with her mixed emotions that she feels from the traumatic memories of abuse.

AND THEN….. When she pleas “Where are you?”, its like she is crying out to her lost childhood self. These few words come across to be very powerful, as it shows her desperation to an uncaring world, which has stripped her of who she really is.

As a result Ruby’s loss and grief, causes her to feel isolated and leads to a mental breakdown, which is shown in the scene ‘Ruby’s decent into madness’. Even though she eventually reunites with her family, it is too late for them to reclaim the child they once knew; they too suffer loss.
