INTRODUCTION

Simple distillation is a process to purify volatile compounds or compounds with different boiling points. It is a simple process that takes a mixture of compounds and applies heat. The substance with the lowest boiling point, (usually the most volatile), will boil and vaporize first. Using a distillation apparatus consisting of a flask, glass tubes, thermometer, condensing tube and distillate container, the first gaseous vapor that rises can be condensed back into liquid. This liquid is directed into a separate container and is called the distillate. When the first boiling point is reached the vapors rise. The vapors that hit the upper side of the flask and thermometer will condense and fall back down to again re-vaporize. The vapors that reach the upper side arm will enter a water-cooled condensing tube where it will condense to liquid form and fall in to a separate distillate container. In Simple Distillation the distillate will contain a higher percentage of the more volatile compound but will not be pure. If the partial pressures are calculated and then divided by the total pressure the best separation percentage can be calculated. Generally Simple Distillation is only used to separate compounds that have boiling points that differ by at least 80 degrees Celsius.

In this Distillation experiment, Cyclohexane is distilled from an equal mixture of Cyclohexane/Toluene.

Raoult’s Law The vapor pressure of a compound in a mixture is equal to the product of the vapor pressure of the pure substance and the mole fraction of the substance in the mixture.

Dalton’s Law The mole fraction of a substance in the vapor at a given temperature is equal to the partial pressure of the substance at that temperature divided by the total pressure.

RESULTS / DATA

A mixture of 0 mL Cyclohexane and 0 mL Toluene is added to a flask that contains a boiling chip. The flask is attached to a Simple Distillation apparatus and heat is applied to the flask. The volume of the distillate and the temperature are recorded as the distillate is formed.

Toluene

The atmospheric pressure during this experiment was 760 mm (Hg)

40 mL 101.0

45 mL 105.0

50 mL 107.5

DISCUSSION

At roughly the boiling point for Cyclohexane the distillate started to form. As the temperature increased the distillate still formed at a steady rate. The rate of flow continued until the temperature neared the boiling point for the second substance, Toluene. At this point the rate of flow slowed down. On a graph of Temperature vs. Distillate Volume, it is easy to see that there is not a constant boiling point indicating a lack of purity. A pure substance will have a constant boiling point. To get a greater percentage of Cyclohexane the distillation process can be repeated.

Some Points to consider

Calibration of thermometer Accurate data is achieved with instruments that are accurate and functioning properly. In this experiment we did not calibrate the thermometer. This could be a source of error.

Boiling points of mixtures - Boiling points are a function of atmospheric pressure. The boiling points of most liquids decrease by 0.5° C for every 10 mm Hg decrease in atmospheric pressure.

CONCLUSION

Using the technique of Simple Distillation and starting with equal amounts of Cyclohexane and Toluene. The distillate formed had a higher percentage of Cyclohexane but was not pure. The lack of a constant boiling point indicated that the substance was not pure.

Between 1846 and 1865, Palmerston held office either as Prime Minister of Foreign secretary. Even as Prime Minister, Palmerston was interventionist in foreign affairs. Palmerston popularised foreign affairs in that he became the embodiment of British Foreign policy. Palmerston officiated foreign affairs when Britain was the dominant world force.

The principles of British foreign policy were established in 1815, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, these were four-fold. They were firstly to maintain a balance of power in Europe of whom France was the dominant power. General stability was important, the British felt that the greatest threat to stability came from arbitrary monarchies who wanted to expand at any cost. Secondly to ensure international conditions supported Britain’s economic interests; a peaceful world meant that Britain could trade freely. The third area of foreign policy was the defence of Britain’s territory both at home and abroad, ‘threats to British territory were many and real’ in the 1th Century. The Indian sub-continent was of particular interest and importance. Finally, the fourth major area of British foreign policy was to establish friendly and stable governments throughout the world. During this period, the interest over foreign affairs, which the monarch had so far retained, diminished, Palmerstone took very little heed of the Queen’s role in foreign policy’ . The reason for this interest was two-fold, firstly, the monarch in the head of the armed forces, and secondly, many of the royal families in Europe were related to the British royal family, the monarchy had unique relationships with Europe.

Palmerston had in fact held office before 1846. His so called ‘first phase’ lasted from 180-1841. During this period Palmerston faced 4 key issues; the Belgian Revolt, the Spanish-Portuguese problem, Turkey and the Near Eastern problem and finally China and the Opium wars. All were huge successes, Palmerston demonstrated his capability in the field of foreign affairs. In the case of the Spanish-Portuguese problem he had managed to out-manoeuvre the French and keep them out of the Iberian Peninsula. The Opium wars had established British interest in China and firmly asserted British dominance and superiority, although the terms of the Treaty of Nan King were morally suspect. Furthermore, the Near Eastern Problem was probably one of Palmerston’s greatest successes in his 4 years in office.

His second phase began after a break from office of 5 years. This second phase lasted from 1846-1851, during which Palmerstone was at his most aggressive, domineering and independent. He faced 5 key issues/events. The first was that of the Spanish Marriages, this affair was not a success for Palmerston. When Queen Isabella was 10 Louis Philippe put forward a proposal that Isabella should marry one of his sons. Palmerston immediately ‘took up the Coburg candidature…in no uncertain terms’ . Philippe was not prepared to negotiate any longer and in 1846 announced that Isabella was to marry his son, the Duke de Montpensier. It was a disaster for Palmerston, ‘the fury and indignation to which this announcement gave rise in Great Britain marked the end of any further attempt to keep up even the pretence of an Anglo-French entente’ . The year of 1848 was called the ‘year of revolutions’, with revolutions in Lombardi, Venetzia and France, Hungary and Bohemia. However, Palmerston did not involve himself with any of these countries. Although he supported the idea of self-rule, he feared that if the Austrian Empire collapsed it would allow Russia to become the dominant power. Russia was an autocracy, an arbitrary monarchy, something the British government feared, ‘in the British view, the most likely threat to general stability…would be an arbitrary monarchy…in effect this meant an erratic Tsar like Alexander 1’ .

The Haynau Incident soured relations between Palmerston and the monarchy. General Haynau had visited Britain in an offì¥Á M ð ¿ Ÿ1

bjbjâ=â= . W W , ê ÿÿ ÿÿ ÿÿ l Î Î Î F 4 à à à ø ø ø ø n sent a gun-boat to blockade Athens to protect the rights of a British citizen, Don Pacifico, to compensation. His cabinet, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were appalled by his lack of consultation although he was cited as a hero in the country. The affair had also soured the already poor relations with France and Russia, allies of Greece who were infuriated at Greece’s humiliation. However, Palmerton, after a vote of no confidence had been put forward against him, saved his position and his reputation, and to some extent his party’s position in power with his ‘Civis Romanus Sum’ speech. Despite this, the Don Pacifico affair had a number of important consequences; firstly, he had developed a reputation for bullying smaller states, secondly relations with France, Italy and Austria were strained and finally, relations with the monarchy had broken down.

The affair over Louis Napoleon was a disaster for Palmerston who had made two fatal political errors. Firstly he had failed to consult with his cabinet and secondly he had chosen to support a Bonaparte, contrary to the Queen’s wishes. Russell was forced to sack Palmerston, who would react by bringing down Russell’s administration in 185.

However, this was by no means the end of Palmerston’s career. The period 185-55 was dominated by the war in the Crimea. By 1855, and the start of Palmerston’s ‘third phase’, public opinion was demanding an end to the war. Events proved fortuitous for Palmerston, the conditions of British troops began to improve and the Russian Tsar had died, to be replaced by his son who was eager to bring about peace. The war was ended at the Treaty of Paris in 1856, this settlement was attributed to Palmerston who had removed Britain from the war with national dignity. It was the beginning of what was to become the most successful period of Palmerston’s career. His success in withdrawing Britain from the Crimea was to be followed up be a second war with China. Britain achieved three things from the Second war with China, firstly there was an extension of ports open to the British, secondly the opium trade had been legalised to the whole of China and finally, Britain was permitted to send diplomats to Peking. Although this was a success for Britain’s trade and economy, Britain’s merchants now had extended influence in China, and for Palmerston personally, his actions were morally dubious ‘Palmerston’s actions can be questioned from a moral point of view’ , he had breached international laws by bombarding Canton and his policies were once again bullying. However, this did not seem to matter in the political climate of the time. These successes were followed up by a further success in the field of Italian Unification. This had extended Britain’s trading interests to Italy; it also meant that Britain had achieved Italy as a firm ally. Britain had established itself as a country in support of self-rule and liberal democracies and opposed to autocracies. Italy saw Britain’s constitutional monarchy as an excellent model for their own governmental system. What is more, Britain had out-manoeuvred France in her attempt to dominate the Western Mediterranean.

Despite these early successes, the American civil war and the Alabama incident damaged Palmerston’s reputation as a foreign secretary and his rash and dramatic reactions were to damage relations with the monarchy once again. When the Civil war broke out over the right to cessation the British government took a neutral stance, in favour of the North. However, when Union agents boarded a British ship, ‘The Trent’, to arrest confederate agents Palmerston demanded wrote a strongly worded apology to President Lincoln and demanded the release of the confederate agents. He then despatched troops to the Canadian British border. Price Albert was forced to step in and diffuse the situation, he ‘persuaded Palmerston to tone down some of his more insulting phrases…Prince Albert probably deserves much more of the crdit for keeping Britain out of the war’ . P’s actions were once again bullying and irrational. His indecisiveness in the Alabama Incident of 186 severed relations with the North further, it was an incident which ‘could have been avoided if Palmerston or Russell had acted promptly’ It was also around this time that Otto Von Bismarck arose. Bismarck out-manoeuvred Palmerston in Denmark in 1864 and Poland in 186. The situation in Poland was Palmerston’s first obvious failure in foreign affairs. Britain had been outmanoeuvred by the Tsar and ‘had seriously underestimated the astuteness of Bismarck’ . He had also mortally offended Napoleon III who should have been treated as an ally. ‘All in all British prestige took a severe knock’ . Both in this case and in Denmark in 1864, Palmerston made threats that he could not support militarily which amounted to national humiliation for Britain.

One of the principals of British foreign policy was to maintain the balance of power in Europe. This was successfully achieved until the latter part of P’s rule when Prussia emerged as the dominant power. The protection and expansion of British trade interests was an area in which Palmerston was successful, he established and extended trade interests in China and in Italy after Italian unification. He also successfully protected British territory at home and abroad. The area he was least successful in was ‘establishing friendly governments throughout the world’, his bullying of smaller powers and his arrogant and proud attitude did not win him friends. His actions were often dramatic and ill thought out, Palmerston cared little for the opinions of the monarchy, his lack of consultation in the Don Pacifico affair shocked Q. Victoria and his cabinet. His erratic personality and drive resulted in a number of consequences. He established Britain as the dominant international force, as ‘policemen of the world’. He also establishes the basis for British imperialism and popularises political ideology, his defence of nationalism and his support of self-determination as well as his ‘Civis Romanus Sum’ speech won him great support in Parliament and with the electorate. However, he also became known for political pragmatism, for example during the American Civil war, he adopted a ‘neutral stance’ which was really a neutral stance in favour of the North. Furthermore, some of his actions were morally dubious, his actions in the Opium wars in particular have been cited as morally debatable, he certainly adopted a ‘bullying policy’ in relation to smaller powers. Sums up Palmerston’s career, saying that ‘on the whole he had been remarkably successful; only in the last couple of years did he seem to be getting out of touch with important developments’

Someone obviously knew their secret, and was determined to make their lives miserable. The letter came in the mail. It was signed “your caretaker.” One after another each member of the group received the letter and was asked to do a certain task for punishment of what they did. Awful tasks they were, and if not performed they would be hurt. The whole thing got carried away. The line had been crossed. “Brenda, Kipp, and Neil are dead!” Who’s the next to go? Why is this happening? Who is the caretaker? Read this book and find out!

In the beginning the story moves quickly and is a little choppy. This is to tell you the jist of what is going on. A lot of flash backs and flash forwards might seem a little confusing so just read slowly. As you read on the book goes at a comfortable pace a d towards the end it speeds up to create suspense and add in new unexpected twists. When you are finished reading the story it all comes together and makes sense. This is an outstanding book! The book is very scary and well written. The book seems to come alive when read because of the realistic characteristics the characters portray. A little tip, don’t read this book alone, or right before you go to bed! The book is mainly about lies, friendships, and how far some people will go to get what they want.

1. A connection-oriented protocol has some features that allow a person to know that it is a connection-oriented protocol. A connection-oriented protocol is a protocol that provides a virtual-circuit using flow control, acknowledgements, and other processes of guaranteeing data delivery(Tomsho 00.). Connection-oriented protocols are found at the transport layer 4.

. When a computer sends data, a person will start at Layer 7 of the OSI model, which is the application layer. Here is where the data is created and then it sends it to the presentation and session layers where all three add header information. Then the data is broken into smaller pieces by layer 4, transport layer. The transport layer adds the TCP header and the data is now called a segment. Each segment is sequenced in order for the data stream to be put together again when it reaches its destination. Then the segments are handed to the network layer. The network layer adds its header of logical addresses, or IP addresses. With all of the previous layers headers and information and the addresses the segment is now called a packet. Once the IP addresses have been added the packet is sent to the data link layer . The data link layer is responsible for taking the packets and actually putting them on the physical medium. But, before it sends them off on the cable, it attaches the source and destination’s MAC address, or the physical addresses of the computers. The data link layer also LLC and FCS for error checking and protocol identification for when the packets arrive at the destination. Finally, the packets are then turned into binary and sent out on the network.

4. The Trace command helps determine the path data takes on a network. This is handy when you want to trouble shoot a network, for it allows you to see how far the data needs to go to get to the destination and how long it took to get there. This command also tries to resolve the name of a responding router, which will help you when you want to find the actual location or name of a company that controls the router(Tomsho 60). The ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) sent by a computer usually are for when a datagram cannot reach it’s destination, or when the gateway does not have the buffering room needed to forward a datagram, and the gateway can tell the sender to send data on a shorter route. Typically you receive ICMP messages when there are errors in the processing of datagrams and a host is not able to send its data to the receiving station.

5. It is estimated that 0% of all viruses now come in the form of email attachments (Kaminski). The viruses are getting harder to detect as is the case of the virus Nimda. Nimda was hard to control because it used it’s own email client code and did not need a host email client to send itself (Kaminski). There are ways to avoid getting and spreading viruses. For example, install virus detecting software on all desktops and servers. A person should also use common sense when opening email. If you do not recognize the sender do not open the email. There are emails which claim, if opened, to remove viruses on your computer, which are themselves the virus (Tomsho 61). Again, if you do not recognize the sender, delete the message. It is important to keep the virus scanning software updated, as there are new viruses coming out on an almost daily basis.

THE FUTURE

By Devin Irvin pd

Throughout history here in America there has always been some form of verbal acrobatics or jousting involving rhymes within the Afro-American community. This is hip-hop, the formation of rhymes beats and melodies all collaborated into one. Hip hop started in the 170’s in Queens, New York when people started to figure out that disco can lead to a whole new type of music when you switch the beats and style.

Hip-hop is not just about rhyming, hip-hop is a culture it is a way of life and many live their lives through the hip-hop world. Hip-hop can consist of music, clothes, a person’s language and their overall personality. It all started with break dancing, graffiti and rhyming with people like Kurtis Blow and Kool Moe Dee taking care of the rhyming and groups like the Sugar Hill Gang in the streets dancing for hours upon hours at a time. Hip-hop is the way people get by from day to day, its what little kids do to keep from being bored, it is what people all across the country talk about because Hip-Hop is anything out of the ordinary, it is anything that is not in the majority whether it be music, the clothes a person chooses to wear or even what kind of car they drive. The majority of hip hop is within the African American race but their are some other races who have an influence on hip-hop because their not in the majority.

Cheap Custom Essays on the furture

essay writing service

If you ask a person today what is hip-hop music, their answer will most likely be hip-hop is rap. Rap is not hip-hop those two can be as different as black and white sometimes. Rap is a person rhyming words with a set of words that they just said, it usually consists of killing, stealing or disrespecting the other sex but hip-hop is a totally different style of music. Hip-hop is what many people want and need to say but never are bold enough to say it, hip-hop is telling you what you might not want to hear because it is real, hip-hop music is music that is going to tell you the truth whether you like it or not. Artist like Mos Def and Common are artist who talk about the positives in the world and the negatives and what we as creatures on this earth can do to bring the negativity to an end. Rappers like Eminem and Fifty Cent are wealthy and powerful people in the world of music today and people like Mos Def and Common are not as popular and are not as wealthy but they are the true artists because it is a lot harder to write about something that is going on in the world today than it is to just write about whatever sounds good.

Many people wonder what will the future of America look like, I honestly believe that hip-hop will be the future in music, dancing and anything else that is entertainment. Hip-hop will be the majority and it will be in at least 80 percent of Americas houses and every one in the world will be doing some form of hip-hop.

I havDriver’s Ed

By Caroline B. Cooney

The book I read is called Driver’s Ed. It is about a girl named Remy, her friend Lark, and her other friend Morgan. The first 5 pages of the book start off by describing Remy’s family, which includes her mom, dad, younger brother Mac, and younger brother Henry. Then it talks about Morgan’s family. It consists of his mom, dad, and little sister Starr. His dad is going to run for governor, and it pretty much says how perfect his family and life is. It also lets you know that Remy has a crush on Morgan, and Morgan has a crush on Remy.

Anyway, in this class, the teacher has a lot of trouble with names. He announces three names to go drive, and Remy, Lark, and Morgan drive most of the time. He calls out Remy, Christine, and Morgan. Lark then switches with Christine. Remy is driving, and she accidentally drives over the median and leaves some of the muffler behind. Then Lark drives and runs a red light. It doesn’t let you know how Morgan did, but when they get back from driving, they get an idea that they should all steal road signs for their room.

In the next 5 pages, Remy, Lark, and Morgan plan to go out to steal their signs. Lark is sick though, so she doesn’t go. None of them have their licenses, so Nicky Buddy drives. He is one year older than all of them, and he lives by Morgan so he is friends with him. Remy decides that she want a Morgan Road sign, they get a Thickly Settled sign for Lark, and Morgan takes a Stop sign. Also, Remy and Morgan kiss when they are in the car. When Remy comes home, Mac starts to question her and she has to hide the Morgan Road sign in the bushes to make sure that Mac doesn’t tell their mom what she did.

In the next 5 pages, Morgan begins to think about the fact that he is going out with Remy now. He is worried about what is going to happen in school the next day. In concert choir, he doesn’t even look at her, or talk to her. He just focuses on points on the wall, or on the floor. Then at home, Remy’s mom finds out that she is going out with Morgan, and she gives her approval of him. Then it’s the next day in Driver’s Ed, and Remy, Lark, and Morgan decide that they better not go drive days in a row, so they stay behind. Morgan, once again, doesn’t even look at Remy the whole class. He just sits in the library next to his friend, Taft. Remy becomes sad, and wonders why Morgan is ignoring her. Remy then had a basketball game, and Morgan goes to watch.

That night, Morgan is watching the news and he sees a thing on about how a stop sign was taken off of Cherry Road and some mother was hit by a truck and died. Morgan then realizes that it was the sign that they took. Morgan’s dad then says, “Whoever took that sign should be shot.” The next section of the book starts out in Remy’s house, around 110. Then Lark calls and tells Remy what was on the news about the stop sign. That night, Remy can’t sleep because she is picturing the accident in her head. It was Friday, so she didn’t have to worry about school, but all she could think about was the sign. What if her class found out?

Saturday passed, and still, she couldn’t think of anything but the sign. Then Morgan’s family decides to start going to church, and this makes Remy think that Morgan told. But then she realizes they only went because his dad is running for governor. After church, everyone went to the basement to have cake and coffee, but Morgan couldn’t eat because every time he put cake in his mouth, he thought of the lady never eating again. Then Mac walks over to Morgan and starts telling him about how Remy likes him so much, and how their mom has pre-qualified him for marriage. He pretty much embarrasses Remy.

The next Monday morning, Remy’s mom is taking her and Mac to school when they notice that 4 mailboxes are destroyed. Her mom said they should be shot, and this made Remy think what she would think of her if she found out that it was her that took the sign. That day in school, a cop comes and talks to the class about the accident. Remy and Morgan are scared, but all the cop says is don’t do it. Nothing happened on Tuesday or Wednesday, but on Thursday, a full-page ad was in the paper, paid for by the lady’s husband that said “Who murdered my wife? I don’t know, but I’ll find out. Look at this beautiful woman. Only twenty-six. You killed her. You ended her life, and left mine empty. Don’t sleep tonight!”

Murderer!

In the next section of the book, and it was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Remy’s family was all there. She thinks about the lady’s family. Starr and Morgan go on a bike ride, and Morgan thinks about it more. Then it is Monday, and the principal put the full-page ad on the bulletin board. In Driver’s Ed, Remy is chosen to go, but for once the teacher sees her offering her nametag and makes her drive. Taft is driving, and Mr. Fielding tells him to turn on to Cherry Road. Then they pull over at the place where accident was, and Mr. Fielding asks, “Who did it?” They defend themselves, and Remy acts like she knows nothing at all about it. That night, Morgan sees a TV. Commercial for it. Then his mom says, “I agree with you Rafe, (Morgan’s dad’s name) whoever took that sign should be shot.”

In the next section of the book, Morgan decides that he can’t take it anymore and tells Nickie that he has to tell about it. Nickie just said, “Don’t do it yet, let’s talk.” Morgan calls for Remy, but she’s not there so he tells Mac to have her call him and say that he is going to tell. Remy then goes to call Morgan, but Mac interrupts her and says, “Tell what? What is he going to tell?” “Gossip,” Remy says. Then she calls Morgan and tells him not to do it. She says to try to think of the good things in life, and try not to think about the sign. She had forgotten Mac was in the room. “You took the sign? You?” Mac said. Morgan tried to take the blame, but Remy wouldn’t let him do it. She tells him as long as we don’t admit it, they won’t find out about it. Before she hangs up, he promises he won’t tell. Then she deals with Mac by starting to cry and getting him to actually feel sorry for her. He says that it’ll be okay. Then Morgan goes to Nickie’s house, and they talk about what would happen if they tell. To prevent Morgan from telling, Nickie says that if he tells, he is going to say that Remy and Morgan wanted to see an accident and that they were glad that a woman died. This stopped Morgan from telling.

Back at Morgan’s house, there are a bunch of lawyers watching the news. The ad comes on, and Morgan asks them what would happen to the kid if they found him. They said that being it would probably be his first offense, he would be fined $50 and have to do some community service. The reason for that is that all they did was take the sign, they didn’t kill anyone. Morgan tells Remy about Nickie’s threat and that scared her. She’s afraid that her parents might actually believe him. Then the days begin to pass very quickly and nothing is heard about the accident for a while. The ads stop, and most everyone forgets about it.

In the last section of the book, Remy takes her driving test and passed it, but on the way out, she tells Mr. Fielding that it was her who took the sign and that she is going to tell her parents tonight. She takes her car out and goes and picks up Morgan. She tells him that she told. Morgan decides that he better tell his parents also. He tells his dad and his father just sits there in disbelief. Then it tells how Remy told her parents and how they went nuts. Her mom thought she was a bad mother, and her dad just couldn’t believe it. Remy’s father doesn’t know whether to bring in the police or not. Then he called Nickie’s parents, but they convince him that he wasn’t involved. A meeting between Mr. Fielding, Remy’s family, and Morgan’s family is arranged. At the meeting, Mr. Fielding says that he thinks Morgan and Remy should be punished. They don’t agree on whether to call the cops or not. The next day, they decide to go and talk to Mr. Thompson. They apologize for what they did and Mr. Thompson realizes that if they’re sorry, that’s good enough for him. Then the next day, Mr. Fielding takes Remy and Morgan to look at the grave of Denise Thompson. They say they’re sorry again. THE END

Letter From the Reader

I thought this was a really great book! I read it in about 4 hrs. I have previously read some of Caroline B. Cooney’s other books such as The Face on the Milk Carton and Deadly Offer. What happens in this book sounds like just some innocent fun that could happen to anyone. I think street or stop signs look cool when hung up in a room, there are many restaurants around our town that have some fairly new looking ones hung up. The characters names should have been picked where they could’ve been pronounced easier. It was right of Remy and Morgan to come up and tell on themselves. Would I have told if it was me,? probably not.

I wouldn’t recommend this book to an 8th grader but propose that it’s reading level would be that of mid-level 6th grader or 7th grader. I guess the reason Hamilton County Schools put this book on our Summer Reading List is because it’s target audience would be those fixing to learn to drive.

Sincerely,

Cody Frazier

A literary hero may indeed be defined as “a figure noble in personality, who has a tragic character flaw which ultimately causes his downfall.” Victor Frankenstein, however, cannot accurately be defined as a literary hero. I take no issue with Frankenstein’s possession of tragic character flaws; I concede that he has many. Nor do I argue that his downfall was the result of anything but hamartia. Victor Frankenstein’s sole virtue lies in his truthful relation of the sordid story; he describes with grim accuracy his betrayal of Justine, the conscious endangerment of his darling Elizabeth, his craven attempts to flee the consequences of his youthful indiscretion, and the horrifying egotism which led the young Frankenstein to give life to a monster that would eventually destroy him. The willful selfishness Victor Frankenstein displays throughout the novel reveals his personality to be decidedly ignoble.

There are certainly a number of ways in which Victor Frankenstein’s scientific techniques could have been put to innocuous, if not noble, use. Were Frankenstein interested simply in furthering scientific research and contributing to the knowledge of the time, he could easily have chosen to create an animal, rather than an eight-foot-tall humanoid monstrosity with human emotions. His motive for tampering with the natural boundaries between life and death is simple Frankenstein wishes to be a god.

A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs.

Frankenstein assumes that he will possess the absolute loyalty of his creations, regardless of how he treats them. He wishes to conquer the “ideal bounds” of life and death, but only for the sake of the notoriety and admiration such a feat is sure to bring. He wishes to rule over a kingdom of beings created by his own hand, but does not trouble himself over their happiness or quality of life. In essence, he aspires only to conquer. Fortunately, the day has passed when blunt ambition and thirst for power could be viewed as admirable qualities. We now demand that our conquerors display certain redeeming qualities, such as affection for their troops, bravery, mercy, love of country, or selflessness. Victor Frankenstein is devoid of such redeeming qualities, demonstrating in their place a grotesquely bloated ego that prevents him from thinking rationally, ethically, and nobly about the rights of his hideous creation and the consequences his experiment will have on the human race.

Just as daydreaming about becoming a doctor will not earn one a license to practice medicine, merely agonizing over one’s moral transgressions will not grant one a heroic character or a noble spirit. Though Victor Frankenstein readily admits to his anguish, his guilt, and his impossible wretchedness, he does not consider admitting his sins to the court that tries Justine for a murder his monster committed. Both his reluctance to take responsibility for the role he played in Justine’s wrongful conviction and his refusal to confess his crimes to either the authorities or his loved ones indicate that he values the public’s favorable perception of his sanity and rectitude above Justine’s life. He bemoans the “timorousness” of the character witnesses called upon in Justine’s defense, but makes no effort to follow Elizabeth’s example, and testify on her behalf. Indeed, Frankenstein’s only physical response to his cousin’s unjust conviction is to excuse himself from the situation

…I rushed out of the court in agony. The tortures of the accused did not equal mine; she was sustained by innocence, but the fangs of remorse tore my bosom, and would not forego their hold.

Though Justine is the subject of the prosecution’s condemnation and bears the resulting punishment, it is Frankenstein’s personality which is truly on trial. We consider Frankenstein’s unspoken defense of his own inaction, and find him guilty of the cowardice and ignobility of character that allows him to observe Justine’s misfortune but dismiss it, in favor of the self-indulgent contemplation of own victim status. It may be that no effort on Frankenstein’s part would have been sufficient to influence the jury or console Justine. But literary heroes are notorious for fighting impossible fights, driven by an innate sense of morality. Frankenstein’s self-pity in the face of Justine’s imminent execution is behavior better suited to a literary villain, not the hero.

George Orson Welles is an American original and a cultural phenomenon. Welles was young, only 5, when he became famous and infamous. Welles was brash, arrogant, innovative, brilliant, a showman, and a magician.

Welles’s creativity became apparent in childhood. In school, Welles would actually write, direct, and act his own plays, catching the attention of local newspapers who dubbed him a prodigy. When Orson was six years old, his parents divorced and his mother took him to Chicago, immersing him in the theatre and classical music. After his mother’s unexpected death a few years later, Welles was sent to Todd school, where he would continue to produce plays. After graduating, Welles was sent to Ireland, where his father, out of disdain for his passion in theatre, hoped he would turn to painting. The plan backfired splendidly, as Welles found his way to the Gate Theatre. Welles eventually left for America, where he met John Houseman who, with Welles, began work with the New York Federal Theatre – a project formed with the WPA under the New Deal reformation. Here they produced the famous adaptations of Macbeth and Julius Caesar. Right-wing politicians began to protest the project, and their production of The Cradle Will Rock was overly leftist, and it was closed down by federal agents on opening night. Welles resigned soon after, and formed a new repertory company – the Mercury Theater.

Welles also became involved in directing and acting in radio broadcasts of the classics, particularly Dickens and Shakespeare. His most famous broadcast was The War of the Worlds which caused national panic among listeners who believed that the simulated news broadcast it featured was real. Though the broadcast was followed by critical press and threats of legal action (including one from H.G. Wells), it exemplified Welles’s extraordinary abilities as a producer, the power of the mass communication medium of radio, and most importantly, it brought national notoriety to Welles himself.

In 1 Welles went to Hollywood. His first produced feature film, and perhaps his greatest, was Citizen Kane. Welles was fearless and flamboyant, even when William Randolph Hearst, the journalism magnate, campaigned to have Citizen Kane removed from theatres. Hearst, who saw a portrait of himself in the film, threatened legal action and delayed the film’s release. Hearst’s action had, however, given the film wonderful publicity. It was released in 141, in the week of Welles’ 6th birthday.

Not only was Welles’s subject matter controversial, the cinematic techniques used by Welles to illustrate the subject were also controversial and stunning. For example, low angle camera shots that revealed ceilings and made characters seem simultaneously dominant and trapped. Welles pushed existing filmmaking techniques as far as they would go, creating a new and distinctive film aesthetic.

Welles’s career as a director was brilliant and erratic. His life was filled with unfulfilled projects, but as his peak, he was regarded as one of the greatest figures in cinema. Welles was similar to one of his most famous characters, Harry Lime – A cold war” character shrouded in mystery and deceit”.

Golda Meir was a woman with a lifelong commitment and an unfailing dedication in bringing her dream to a reality. Her dream was for Israel to be a safe homeland for the Jewish nation, including the Zionist Movement, which she wanted people to clearly understand. Zionism served as a strong belief that the Jews should gain their fatherland in Israel that they had lost to the Romans in 70 A.D. Golda Meir never lost sight of this goal, and did countless things for Israel. If only we could have her compassion, strength, courage and intelligence- then would we all be able to make such a perpetual effect on the world’s countries as she did.

On May rd, 188, Golda was born into a family in Kiev, Russia. Her family was quite destitute, and there was much hunger and tears. “I remember too clearly how poor we were. There was never enough of anything, not food, not warm clothing, not heat at home. I was always a little too cold outside and a little too empty inside.” Golda remembers that gruel (a certain type of grain) was a luxury in their household, and at times, her own gruel was confiscated for the sake of her younger siblings. She felt life’s hardships and thought that there was no righteous justice served anywhere. Her sister, Sheyna, fainted from hunger in school. Golda says that it’s sad to recall her memories, for she had rare pleasant times at home. Pogroms were all over during this time, looking to persecute for the Jews as they called them “Christ Killers”. They were to do terrible things to the Jewish families, gesturing knives and huge sticks.

“I can remember how I stood on the stairs that led to the second floor in my building where another Jewish family lived. The mother of that family held hands with her little daughter, while watching our fathers trying to barricade the entrance with boards of wood.” It was a fearful time for Golda, possessing a small point of view being a young child, and she did not yet understand the dirty politics of the world. These inclement conditions of their personal poverty and pogroms caused them to migrate to America in 106, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There she started middle school until she learned she was to marry a man twice her age at 14, and so she ran to her sisters house in Denver, Colorado to begin High School soon after.

It was at her sisters that Golda grew continuously interested in the Zionist Movement. There, guests had came to discuss Zionism and it’s works. She joined the Zionist movement, and from there- the rest is almost history! On December 4, 117 she married Morris Myerson, who she loved even though he had not shared her enthusiasm on Zionism. In the first few months of their marriage, Golda had traveled all over the United States producing new Zionist groups and fundraising. “I listened to the other groups, I heard what they had to say, but it was to the Socialist Zionists that I found myself listening most attentively, and it was their political philosophy of Israel that made the most sense to me.” Golda understood and completely accepted the idea for Israel to be the home for the Jews- a place on the Earth where Jews could be free and independent. Zionisim captured her eye more than the political scene in Denver or even then what was going on in Russia.

Golda’s dream was to join a Kibbutz, a communal farm, in Israel, and so she left America and went to Merhavia, Israel to fulfill this dream. Her personality was strong, and when she saw something that she wanted to be a part of, nothing could block her from going her own way. Golda was the type of person who got places she wanted to go when she wanted to go. She gave her all into every job she felt would help build the Jewish homeland. One of her main Middot was most definitely determination. Morris had not always liked her travelling and intense involvement in politics, but she had always remained independent and strong in her belief- and kept going with utmost determination to ease the sore backs of the Jewish people.

Golda steadfastly became even more involved with Israel’s movements. In 146, she became the head of the Jewish Agencys political department. Then in 147 she traveled to the United States once more to raise money to purchase arms for Israel. This fundraiser was said to be impossible by many people, but Golda pressed on, determination shining right through. With perseverance, she returned to Israel with 50 Million-, which made Israel possible. She then became appointed Israel’s ambassador to the Soviet Union. Even though she created relationships this way with the Soviet Union, the job required much labor, and Golda wasn’t happy with it. Luckily, she was elected Israel’s minister of labor which allowed her to stay home and not travel as much- and this she was satisfied with. In 148, Israel was established as a state. “The state of Israel! My eyes filled with tears, and my hands shook. We had done it. We had brought the Jewish State into existence! And I, Golda Mabovitch Meyerson, had lived to see the day.” Golda was so relieved, for she felt that the exile of the Jewish people was over, and now we finally had our home. “Too late to save those that perished in the Holocaust, but not to late too save generations to come.”

It is known that for many decades, even centuries, women leaders have sought to strengthen laws to guarantee themselves equal rights. Many legislative efforts sometimes successfully increased womens rights, but the gains were often very difficult, and many major efforts to pass Constitutional Amendments guaranteeing equal rights failed. During World War II, several million American women took factory production jobs to aid the war effort. But after the war had ended, these women were forced to leave their job to make room for the returning soldiers. Society encouraged women to become full-time housewives. Devotion to home and family and the rejection of a career emerged as the ideal image for women.

But a new wave to help women receive their rights began in the 160’s. Women were tired of being known as a person who would just take care of dishes and clothing, running the house day in and day out. Womens groups fully discovered discrimination in the workplace, where women received less pay and fewer promotions than men did. They also uncovered boundaries to women seeking political office and to female students striving for higher education.

Golda Meir was way ahead of her own time. We see so openly her determination, and grand leadership, which she used to help pull her through Israel’s difficulties, and the worlds. She began within herself the beginning of Womens’ rights. Did it matter that not many women before her had been in her position? Did it bother her that she wasn’t young, or wealthy? Golda Meir was a strong lady, full of dreams and goals, which she established for her country, no matter her sex or status.

Golda was discovered to have cancer in 16, but that did not stop her from doing anything-nothing in her lifetime ever did stop her. After working 4 years for Israel, she began thinking of retiring- for this was too much work for her. She backed off from her position as foreign minister, and Prime Minister Levi Eshkol took her place. Only after a few months into her retirement, Golda felt she couldn’t just retire and so she became Labor Party secretary general. Prime Minister Eshkol died of a heart attack in 16, and Golda was asked to take his place, only temporarily. She saw how much Israel really needed her, and she knew it was going to be exhausting. She decided to serve Israel again. On March 7, she was voted in. She became so busy and had so little time, she would have meetings at her kitchen table at night. This was a challenge for Golda, but as usual, with her determination, she took it up as a way to help her people through.

Israel began to have serious problems with the Arab enemies, and there were many loses. Golda mourned each lost with such heart-felt sorrow. “We count each one, and each sorrow is not only of the mother, but of all mothers, of everybody in the country. Then on October 6th, 17, the Arab-Israeli war broke out where ,500 Israeli’s were killed. It is said that this great loss might have been prevented if Golda would have used a callup of the defense forces. And because so, many protests and critics had bothered her, and accused her, and so- she resigned.

Golda’s cancer wasn’t getting any better, but this didn’t discourage and bother has nearly as much as Israel’s own problems did. She began to work out some peace efforts, but on October 1th, 178, she entered the hospital and passed away. She had wanted no eulogies.

Can you imagine- a woman so strong in her commitment to a country, a woman so determined to make a difference in the world…and did…wanted no eulogies? This woman possessed a great deal of humility. She did more for Israel than any other person did. She built relationships with her people, felt for each one that passed away, and did all she could with the power and energy she had remaining. Many presidents I know of today, and even some in the past, do not even nearly come close to Golda Meir. They are in mostly for the politics, and yes, sometimes do make accomplishments-but are they really in it for the welfare of the people themselves, like Meir was? Golda, through her dedication to the cause, gave Jewish people hope. Her attitude was uplifting, and her success made Jews proud to have her as a representative of their community and to call her a Jew.

Gershon Fradkin, the director of the Foreign Training Department of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Extension service, wrote a tribute to Golda Meir saying

“Whether as Ambassador, Minister or Prime Minister, to everyone in Israel she was Golda, as she was for the many students she met and talked with. She had simplicity of manner and a talent for immediate heart-to-heart contact, which made it easy to talk to her. In my travels in Africa through the years I met with eloquent testimony to the love and admiration which she inspired - the many children who bear the name Golda.”

Meir’s love for Israel was immeasurable and everlasting. Her name, Meir, in Hebrew, means light. For sure this is a name that exactly describes her as a person. A light unto the country, a light unto the people, and a light unto the Jewish Nation as a whole, forever.

Raising a child with Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a medical condition caused by a permanent brain injury that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. About 1 in every 500 babies are affected. The effect of Cerebral Palsy, or CP, is characterized by lack of muscle control and body movement. While it is not a progressive disease of the brain, the effects of CP may change gradually over the years. CP can occur due to a variety of causes including an illness, prematurity, or difficult delivery. Many of the causes still remain a mystery. CP affects childrens muscle tone in a variety of ways. Cerebral palsy can range from mild to severe depending on the location and size of the injury. It does not necessarily mean that all limbs will be impacted. Cerebral palsy cannot be cured but medicines and sometimes surgery may be recommended to treat specific problems such as muscle spasms. Another finding in the study was that twins who survived a fetal death of their co-twin were 108 times more likely to have CP than single children and 1 times more likely than twins whose co-twin survived. Three out of four of theses children were from identical twin sets and were normal or nearly normal in birth weight. The risk of CP was similar in twins of like gender or unlike gender pairings.

Often, parents of a child with cerebral palsy must provide lifelong care plus ongoing medical care.

Providing this care is expensive. Parents, understandably, want to know if a medical mistake caused their childs condition, and whether they can receive financial and other help in dealing with the challenges of raising a disabled child. The most important people in any childs life are, of course, the parents. Children require time, patience, love, dedication, and many other things. Raising a child with Cerebral palsy requires more of these qualities. The emotional burdens brought about by raising a child with developmental, mental, or physical disabilities pose challenges to those raising the child. When a parent first learns that their child has a disability, it is said that they will go through a process of grieving. This process is often described as similar to mourning a death, or going through a divorce. Five different stages of feelings that all parents of children of cerebral palsy will endure have been identified. These are shock, grief, denial, anger, and acceptance. This feeling model is not universal, as people will deal with things in their own way. However, most will feel some degree of each, and professional therapy may be needed. There is no universal parents guide to raising a child with CP. Each must find their own way. Nothing in life really prepares anyone for being disabled and when it is your baby or child who is suddenly the recipient of this label, life may suddenly seem very unfair. People do not ask for this, and there is very little they can do to change it. Their sense of control over their lives and the life of their child is at risk. Relationships with other family members, especially the spouse if there is one, can be under great stress and it may be all they can do to hold themselves together. It is okay to be angry and to do their best to channel their anger into getting the best services they can for their child.

A person with cerebral palsy also has to cope with disabilities and handicaps. A disability is a physical loss of function such as being unable to walk, having difficulty with hand control or speech. A handicap is the degree to which that disability puts you at a disadvantage in daily life. For instance, someone who is very short-sighted may be considered to have a disability, but he/she is unlikely to consider this a handicap if he/she has corrective lenses. A disability may prevent someone with CP from climbing stairs, but this will only be a handicap if the building he/she wants to enter is not wheelchair accessible. It is very hurtful to have someone pat you on the head if you are sitting in a wheelchair, or to walk away because they cannot understand what you are trying to say to them. Prejudice and teasing can be very damaging. A good sense of self-esteem is required to cope with these negative attitudes. Children can also be handicapped if they are over-protected and become too dependent. People with disabilities are people first and should never be described by negative labels like wheelchair-bound, spastic, or afflicted with cerebral palsy. All people share similar needs, desires, and responsibilities. It seems that some people think just because somebody has Cerebral Palsy, they must be stupid.

The first video took place .5 million years ago in East Africa where a species of ape lives. Australopithecus afarensis had taken the first steps towards humanity - and could stand and walk on two legs.

A few million years before, Africa was covered, almost edge-to-edge, with thick rain forest. Our ancestors used all four limbs to move, live and hunt. But immense environmental chaos, changes their future.

The rift valley was forming, and the rainforests dying, as Africa dried out - turning the landscape into an assortment of scattered trees and grass. In this new environment afarensis found it more efficient to move about not on four legs but on two.

This film follows a group of afarensis, and in particular, Lucy and her young newborn. Led by a strong male, there is harmony in their lives. They sleep high in the trees and spend most of the day searching for food. But while drinking from a river, a crocodile sneaks in unnoticed and catches the unsuspecting alpha male.

Now leaderless, a disagreement for power between the two secondary males unsettles the group. Added to that, a rival group invades Lucys territory. While not uncommon in their chimp-like lifestyles, the consequential territory war was both violent and extreme and has devastating consequences.

As the groups lives move on, the video shows how although walking on two feet offers minor advantages to the afarensis it opens the door to an amazing set of new skills and abilities that will change the shape of human life on earth.

Like the Australopithecus afarensis, Humans today (especially men) are very protective of what they believe to be theirs, they are also very competitive and don’t like sharing power. People today also try to find the most efficient way of doing things, just like the Australopithecus afarensis found it more efficient walking on two legs rather than four.

The second video was set in Africa, two million years ago, where there was a crossroad in human evolution. Half a dozen or more different species of ape-men existed along side each other; all of them exploited the environment in a different way and developed their own strategy for survival.

The video follows the lives of two species, Paranthropus boisei and Homo habilis who represent two alternative ways of ape-man life. Although heavy set, with unique gorilla-like faces, the boisei were gentle. They lived within a strict social structure and were led by a dominant male whose strength and power held the group together.

They adapted brilliantly to the tough conditions of dry scorched land. Their huge teeth, four times the size of our own, and strong jaws mean they can eat the toughest plants.

The habilis had taken a different approach to survival. They didn’t have the skills of the boisei but instead developed into the archetypal jack-of-all-trades, prying scavengers prepared to try almost anything to survive. Tough, active, sociable and noisy they are always on the move, and always alert to the possibility of a meal. But in the near drought of the dry season the habilis were struggling. It seemed as if their way of life cannot help them when conditions were tough.

However habilis had a secret weapon, they had come to use brainpower rather than strength. They learnt to work together to scare other predators away from food, they scavenge for meat and, perhaps most importantly, made basic stone tools - equipping themselves through their own efforts with the kind of specialist eating equipment creatures like the boisei had by nature.

Although we have a dominant figure of authority we do not rely on their leadership as much as the boisei did. Like the boisei we usually find it easy to adapt to our surroundings.

Like the habilis we tend to use brainpower over strength,

The third video took place in southern Africa; where the Homo ergaster had taken the next step to becoming human. They had long, modern looking noses, which cooled air as they breathe to stop overexertion.

They had hairless bodies, with millions of tiny sweat glands, so they didn’t need to pant anymore to control their temperature, they sweated. And, above all, they have big brains - nearly two-thirds the size of ours.

This video followed the lives of a group of ergaster on a hunt and showed how they used their big brains. They were the first ape-man to have our intricate understanding of the natural world, and was able to recognize and follow the footprints left behind by many different animals. They were expert toolmakers and used a highly refined stone hand axe. But the most important thing they used their big brains for is the same thing as we do - understanding other people.

Ergaster lived in large social groups and spent their time in the complex task of getting along with each other. Their society was held together not by a dominant male, but by the bonds of family and friends. For the first time, hunters would bring back meat to the rest of the group after a hunt, using it to forge alliances and reinforce relationships. Their extraordinary social world has led to a new occurrence in our human story - the couple, living together, at least for a time, faithfullly.

Their new found social bonds and understanding of the world had equipped them with skills that enabled them to move away from their ancestral home in Africa. Over thousands of years they spread throughout the Middle East and Asia, reaching as far as China and are now known in their new Asian home as Homo erectus.

Despite being incredibly sophisticated for their kind, they were still far from human. One million years after and they had not changed, they were still using the exact same tools and tactics, they had made no technological advancements. Compare this with Homo sapiens who had gone from the steam age to the space age in under a hundred years.

Their brains simply did not work in the flexible way ours do. For them to become like us required a major change in thinking. We may know what triggered this dramatic change; towards the end of ergasters time there is evidence that they had learnt to control and work with fire as a weapon, for warmth and as a tool.

For the first time in our history night-time no longer brought danger, but warmth, security and time for the mind to wander - perhaps time for the mind to change. Fire certainly revolutionised the way our ancestors lived - perhaps it did the same to how they could think.

In the fourth video, nearly half a million years ago, the most advanced human the world had still not seen Europe. Strong and powerful, Homo heidelbergensis were fierce hunters, used sophisticated tools and lived in close knit family groups.

They looked and behaved in a very human way - yet something was missing. In the final video, we saw three brothers on a hunt, when one brother was injured, his worried family spent most of the night trying to keep him alive.

Yet in the morning the hunter was dead and his family had gone, leaving him where he died. There was no ceremony and no looking back. H. heidelbergensis could only see the world as it was, and they could not, for example, think of a life after death, for they lacked the one thing that makes us human - a modern imagination.

H. heidelbergensis were the last step in becoming us. Over two hundred thousand years they had become divided into two groups by extremes of weather and environment, and evolved separately into two very different species.

In the north are the Neanderthals, whose physical power and resilience was the key to surviving in ice age Northern Europe. In one of the harshest environments ever, a small group of Neanderthal was having trouble getting by.

The leaders partner was expecting her first child and the men had to travel far to find food. If they were unsuccessful the group would have to move on, a dangerous event for the near full term mum. In their world, being strong and tough was the key to survival. If the going got tough, they’d just fight back harder.

In the south the other descendants of heidelbergensis, were finding the going even harder. 140,000 years ago, Africa was in the grip of a devastating drought, and something remarkable had happened to the descendants of heidelbergensis who lived there the combination of environment and chance bred in them a unique ability that changed the course of human history.

They developed a mind capable of imagination - for the first time on earth there was a creature capable of understanding and anticipating possibilities, with the gift of abstract thought. It very possibly saved them from the brink of extinction.

Although the Neanderthal were unbeatable for a quarter of a million years, it was this small group of southern survivors, perhaps numbering just a few tens of thousands, would come to dominate the world, and be known as Homo sapiens our ancestors.

The invention of computers has revolutionized the entire world. Everywhere we look, computers have greatly influence on our society. They modernize our cars for being comfortable to drive, keep important role in a business, and be used as the significant implement of scientists for research and development. These factors cause me to think that the computer is the most dramatic change in this century.

Just about everything in a new car is controlled by a computer, a computer will read and recognize our driving patterns and adjusts how and when the transmission should shift from gear-to-gear so that we, as the driver, will get maximum performance from our cars. The latest computer technology is an on-board navigational computer that will direct the driver into using the fastest and most efficient way to get to the destination. It will plan our trip around any construction or traffic jams. If our cars happen to breakdown, a mechanic will just ask the cars computer what the problem is, rather than having to go through a ton of complicated tests to find out what is wrong.

Another reason is that the computer has important roles in a business. If we have ever noticed at a restaurant, a lot of times the waiter or waitress just writes down our orders on a small piece of paper and tosses to the cook. Who then has to try and decipher what has been written down. Now a lot of restaurants are changing there methods and using computers to relay the orders so things are less confusing and also a lot quicker. In the example of having computers put to use in a restaurant doesn’t cause the workers to become lazy. It enables the business to operate more efficiently, and that is something that everyone looks forward to, including the owners, managers, employees, and most importantly the customers.

Finally, scientists have used the computer as a tool in experimentation design, and development. They use the computer to develop theories, to collect and test data, and to exchange information electronically with colleagues around the world. Researches can access database in distant locations all without going any further than the closest computer. Scientists can use powerful computers to generate detailed studies of how earthquakes affect building or pollution affects weather. It would be impossible to explore outer space without computes.

We can always keep adding technology to our everyday lives as long as the technology isnt manipulated to the point that we have to take advantage of and exploit other people in order to get ahead. Everyone can learn to use technology in each of his/her professions and it will make this world a better place to live. It would be great if everything worked out that way, but as we all know we dont live in a perfect world. Some of people are letting technology over come their lives and eventually they will be overcome by laziness and immoral.

During 1787 two political parties argued over what form of government they should take. The two parties were the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists(or republicans.) The federalists wanted a strong central or national government while the republicans wanted the country to have stronger state governments. This started a debate between the two sides which i will tell about.

The federalist party was lead by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. They believed that the well-educated should lead the nation. They believed this because if the educated were to lead the nation then the people would know what they were talking about. If uneducated were to run the country then the government would not run properly because the people would not know how the government works and how to debate over topics and current ideas. Another thing the federalists believed in was a strong central government. They believed this because if they were to have a central government rather than state governments then the United States would act more like a country under one government, rather than fifty individual ones. If the U.S. had a central government they could collect taxes to support schools and an army. With an army they could protect themselves from other nations trying to invade and take over land. Also, under a central government the states would be more equal rather than having a few dominate states. Having a central government would also help to prevent a civil war between states over land, etc. This is why the Federalists wanted a strong central government.

The other party was the republicans or anti-federalists. This party was lead by Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry. They believed that all people should have some political power. They believed this because everyone should have a say and be representatives. They believed this regardless of being educated or not. These two men also strongly believed in strong state governments rather than one huge, national government. If the United States had a big central government then the government might eventually turn into a monarchy. If this happened then the people would have no say and the government and country would fall in ruins. This is what the republicans wanted and they fought hardly for what they believed in.

one thing that both sides wanted was a fair government for the peopne thing that both sides wanted was a fair government for the people. When they debated over the type of government they fought for what they thought was the fairest to the people. Both sides fought passionately for what they believed in. they knew what they wanted to fight for and didnt back down or give up.

It was Friday night, and I was an eleven-year-old kid who was bored and had mischief on his mind. I invited some friends, older kids to come over and play some video games, some older kids. Yeah, so I thought of my self as pretty cool to be hanging out with older kids. My buddies Paul, Dustin and Jeremy came over. Paul was a fourteen year-old rebel without a cause. He was tall for his age and was even sprouting some facial hair. He was a Fast kid, we nicknamed him Speedy Gonzales. Dustin was a little guy for his age. He was fifteen and quite certain he had the answer to everything, but he was cool though because he was 4 years older than me. Jeremy was fourteen also, although nothing too extraordinary about him. He had a huge nose though and I am not kidding! Some said he should declare that thing as his own country, it was that massive.

We were all kicking it in my room playing some hardcore Mortal Combat. Of course I was kicking everyone’s ass. Paul was getting a little bored with playing games so he suggested that we did something crazy that night. We were all up for that, so Paul went to his house and came back with a water balloon launcher.

The next thing I knew we were stationed on top of my roof getting ready to launch grapefruit and eggs at whatever target we thought we could hit. Paul put the first grapefruit in the middle of the launcher while Jeremy and Dustin held the ends to steady the shot. Paul pulled back as hard as he could, than with out any warning, SNAP! The grapefruit soared over my fence, past the street smacking the top of a house directly across from our position.

“Kick Ass!” Paul shouted out.

This feeling of excitement just charged through my whole body like a lighting bolt. Now it was my turn, my time to shine, to show these guys what I was really made of. I grabbed an egg, looked at everyone around me and made sure they noticed that it was me who was going to take the shot. Paul looked at me with eyes of encouragement. This was the time when I became a man. I loaded that egg in the flap of the launcher, Paul and Jeremy held the ends and I pulled back as hard as my muscles could pull, using every ounce in my little body. SNAP! The egg was airborne! The egg traveled low, barely clearing the fence only to hit its final destination, a passing car. SMACK! The egg splattered right on the driver side window. The car slammed on the brakes and came to a screeching stop. “Holy Shit” was all that was going through my mind.

“Run,” Paul screamed!

We all leaped off my roof and dashed for my back door, throwing it open. I went straight to my room while my friends ran to their houses. I slammed the door behind me and sat in the corner wishing I could just disappear. My heart was going a million miles per hour. Just then I heard the doorbell ring. I could of died right there from fear alone. I could hear my dad going for the door and it seemed like he was there for a century. I could not think of a single moment in my whole entire life when I had been this afraid for my life!

The next few days consisted of a lot of time under the sun. Turns out the car I hit just happened to be the only rental car passing through Adobe Road that day, making my little predicament only worse. After I was lectured for what seemed like hours by my dad, I was given the punishment for my hideous behavior. To pay off the car wash needed to clean up the disaster, I was sentenced to yard work. I tried to decide if hanging with the older kids was worth all these horrible consequences I could no longer take back. With every weed I pulled and leaf I raked, I thought maybe I will hang out with kids my own age.
