rd Paragraph-PROCESS OF CHANGE- An incident at school arises and she needs Michaels help. This is the major changing point in perspective of her father. She calls Michael to help her, he does and Josie has a change of heart and accepts him and feels proud to have him in her life. Shown with the positive language used in the quote “How proud to walk alongside ones father”

4th paragraph

INITIAL PERSPECTIVE-Another major change in perspective seen in the novel is Josephine’s view of her own identity. Initially, Josephine believes that her appearance and ethnic background is the determining factor of social acceptance. She also believes that because she is at a wealthy school on a scholarship and has no father she is looked down upon.

CHANGE-When Josephine is told by Sister Louise that she was actually voted school captain but was given the role of vice captain because they felt she lacked the leadership skills she has a sudden change in perspective on herself. She had always felt she was not popular but now has realised she is actually one of the most popular girls in school. At that moment, Josephine says, in first person, “I knew deep down that I was wrong and I think that my emancipation began at that moment.”

Lacrosse is a entertaining sport I like to play. Ive only played for

seasons, but I caught on quick and was soon scoring goals. In lacrosse you

need to know the rules before you play, just like any oter sport or game, the

equipment, and different skills and techniques to handle the ball and stick.

In this essay I will teach you four basic dodges you can do while playing

lacrosse. There are four dodges that I like to do, face dodge, roll dodge, split

dodge and finally bull dodge, are simple dodges anyone can do with a little time

and practice. If one can master these then that person will be on their way to

scoring goals in no time.

First someone interrested in lacrosse needs to get the equipment to play

lacrosse. All of the equipment is a lacrosse stick, including the shaft and head,

shoulder pads, rib pads, elbow pads, gloves, helmet, and a mouth piece. For

someone who is just starting to play I recomend buying only a stick and possibly

gloves so you can feel how to handle the stick while wearing lacrosse gloves.

The reason someone just starting out shouldnt buy all the equipment is because

lacrosse equipment usually expensive and if that person doesnt like the sport

then they dont have all the equipment put to no use.

The face dodge is probably the easiest dodge to learn and is also very

effective. After catching the ball from a teammate, the defense man is usually

going to play man-to-man, which is where he is right on the player trying to get

the ball out of the stick. As he charges out at the person with the ball, which at

Page

the time is in his right hand, that person winds up to take a shot or fakes a pass,

both are done by pulling you stick slightly behind your head. Instead of passing

or taking the shot the offensive player then pulls the stick across their face

tucking it by their opposite ear. After it is done successfully, the player holding

the ball accelerates past the defense man on his left side to an opening for a

shot on goal or a pass to another teammate. This type of dodge is the most

common used by lacrosse players.

The split dodge is similar to the face dodge but instead of making the

deffense man think that the player with the ball is going to pass or shoot the ball

they are going to make him think that the offensive player is running by him on

one side. First the player with the ball runs to the defense man and takes a fast

plant with their front foot and fake going that way. So if they have the ball in the

right hand they fast plant their right foot when they get to a defense man. Next

they switch their stick from their right hand to the left in front of their face and

while accelerating past the defense man on the left side.

The roll dodge is very effective for the quicker lacrosse player. On the way

to the goal a player is feeling that the defense man is playing one of their hands

more than the other, lets say the right hand. This means that the defensive

player is checking his right side more than the left. As they feel this pressure

they fast plant their right foot to the left, front side of the defense man and turn

their back to the defense man. While the player with the ball is in the spinning

motion the player tucks their stick in between their legs keeping the head of the

stick close to their chest or stomache area. Keeping the stick close prevents the

Page

defense man from hitting a players stick and knocking the ball loose. During the

spin the player must switch hands midway through the spin hoping to catch him

off balance then proceed to turn around him. This quick change of direction

should free the offensive player enough to either draw a double team or allow a

good shot on goal. To confuse the defense man more try doing this fake a few

times on him, but instead of turning to the opposite side you fast plant on,

change directions up. Rather than than fast planting on the right foot and

spinning right, fast plant on the right foot and begin to turn right but in mid-spin

turn back to the left. This must be done as fast as possible in order to catch the

defense man off guard.

Bull dodge, as its name suggests is for a player that has a size or strength

advantage over the defense man. There is not too much to this dodge, but

getting in close to the defense man and basically running over him. When a

player has the ball and is attempting at a bull dodge, first they should pull the

stick in close to themself and then lower their shoulder and avoid contact with the

helmet. One should never hit someone else with their helmet becuase it can

cause serious head or neck injury. Once one has knocked down the defense

man move in for a shot on goal. If the bull dodge is successful, the player should

back off of the defense man quick then attept another dodge or just get rid of the

ball.

A few things to remember about all these dodges is that they must be

done at full speed in an actual game. Lacrosse is a fast sport. An offensive

player should not go half speed through them because this will give the defense

Page 4

man time to catch up with the offensive player after the dodge. If they catch up

to the player with the ball then that gives more risk for them to lose the ball. If

one wants to get these dodges perfect they must practice at them starting slow

by themselves, just to get the footing and stick positions correct, then moving at

a faster pace and eventually playing against a defensive player.

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

ACID RAIN

Acidity is measured using a pH scale, with the number 7 being neutral. A substance with a pH value of less than 7 is acidic, while one of a value greater than 7 is basic. The pH scale is logarithmic; that is, a substance of pH of 6 is 10 times more acidic than another with a pH of 7. Generally, the pH of 5.6 has been used as the baseline in identifying acid rain. Acid ran is defined as any rainfall that has an acidity level beyond what is expected in non-polluted rainfall. In essence, any precipitation that has a pH value of less than 5.6 is considered to be acid precipitation. This is a visual illustration of the pH scale

One of the main causes of acid rain is sulphur dioxide. Natural sources that emit this gas are volcanoes, sea spray, rotting vegetation and plankton. However, the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, are largely to be blamed for approximately half of the emissions of this gas in the world. When sulphur dioxide reaches the atmosphere, it oxidizes to first form a sulphate ion. It then becomes sulphuric acid as it joins with hydrogen atoms in the air and falls back down to earth. Oxidation occurs the most in clouds and especially in heavily polluted air where other compounds such as ammonia and ozone help to catalyse the reaction, converting more sulphur dioxide to sulphuric acid. However, not all of the sulphur dioxide is converted to sulphuric acid. In fact, a substantial amount can float up into the atmosphere, move over to another area and return to earth unconverted.

Acid rain has been a major ecological concern for a few decades now. Until recently, little was known about acid rain. Many studies have been made to determine the chemistry of this ecological problem. Its full-blown effects have only been realized recently. Acid rain affects a lot of things, such as lakes and aquatic ecosystems, trees and soil, the atmosphere, buildings and architecture, and even humans.

RATES OF REACTION

For a reaction to occur

i. The particles must collide with each other

ii. The collision must have enough energy

COLLISION THEORY

All substances are made of particles. Particles can be atoms, molecules or ions. In order for a chemical reaction to occur, these particles must collide. The more collisions there are between particles in a given time, the faster the reaction.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT RATES OF REACTION

· TEMPERATURE

Higher temperature means faster rate of reaction because the particles have more energy, therefore they move faster so there are a greater number of collisions. As the temperature is increased, the ions in the reactants gain more kinetic energy, and so move faster, thus, there is a greater frequency of collisions and with a greater force i.e. they move more vigorously. So, there is a greater chance the reactants will react successfully.

· CONCENTRATION OF THE REACTANTS

If the concentration of the reactants is increased, there would be a greater number of particles in the same volume and so the molecules would collide more often. So, the energy of the collisions will remain the same (as long as the temperature is kept constant), but the molecules will collide more often (as there are more of them) and so there are greater successful reactions. Therefore increasing the concentration of the reactants would increase the rate of reaction.

· PRESENCE OF A CATALYST

A catalyst is a substance that increases the speed of a chemical reaction, without being used up in the reaction. So, if the mass of a catalyst is increased up to a point, the speed of the chemical reaction will increase, and so the rate of the reaction will increase.

· THE SURFACE AREA OF REACTANTS

Greater surface area means faster rate of reaction because the particles are ‘exposed’ more to take part in collisions. If something is powdered rather than in large chunks there would be a greater frequency of collisions, and consequently the rate of reaction would be increased.

· THE PRESENCE OF LIGHT

Some chemical reactions absorb light as they take place and this leads to an increased rate of reaction.

PRELIMINARY WORK

The amount of carbon dioxide given off when calcium carbonate reacted in different molarities of hydrochloric acid was measured. 50cm³ of HCl was poured into a conical flask, then grams of CaCO was sprinkled in and it was shut with a rubber bung, with rubber tubing connected to a gas syringe. Then the volume of gas inside the syringe was measured every 5 seconds. The results were noted down. This experiment was repeated with small and large chips of CaCO.

EXPERIMENTAL PREDICTION

I think that the rate of reaction will be proportional to the concentration. For example, as the concentration is doubled, the rate of reaction will also double. So the marble will react much quicker when the molarity of the solution is higher. Therefore the amount of carbon dioxide given off is proportional to the concentration of the solution.

FACTORS TO VARY AND CONTROL

There are five factors that I could have controlled. These are

· Surface area Medium sized chips

· Mass grams of CaCO

· Temperature Room temperature

· Catalyst None used

The factor that I have decided to change is the concentration of the hydrochloric acid. There are a number of reasons for me making this choice. The main reason is that some of the other choices would not have been possible; I cannot vary temperature, as it is dangerous to heat acid and I cannot change the surface area as it would be too inaccurate. I didn’t choose to use a catalyst, as there is no catalyst that affects this particular reaction. I didn’t change the mass of the marble chips as I thought it would be more interesting to change the concentration.

RANGE AND NUMBER OF OBSERVATIONS

I will do 5 ranges of molarities; 0.5M; 1M; 1.5M; 1.75M; M. For each of these ranges, I will do repeats concurrently and then find an average.

ACCURACY OF OBSERVATIONS

I will repeat the reaction for each molarity times and then work out the average. This means that my results will be much more accurate as any anomalies would be counted out. The readings should be quite accurate as the gas cylinders are very accurate apparatus. However they are only accurate to every degree.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

APPARATUS LIST

· Calcium carbonate chips

· 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 1.75, .0 Molar solutions of hydrochloric acid

· A gas syringe with a capacity of a 100 cm

· A flat-bottomed conical flask

· Pipette

· Distilled water

· Measuring cylinder

· Weighing scale to weigh the calcium carbonate chips

· Clamp stand

· Beakers

· Rubber bung tubing

· Stopwatch

METHOD

The reactant that I will vary is the concentration of the hydrochloric acid. The method of varying the concentration would be to dilute the hydrochloric acid. With hydrochloric acid, it would be possible to dilute it as it is liquid itself. In this experiment 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and .0 molar solutions of hydrochloric acid are used. This can be done by adding parts of distilled water to the molar solution of hydrochloric acid. This must be done accurately for a fair test.

Approximately grams of calcium carbonate then should be weighed out with a weighing scale. Once both of these are measured the syringe is clamped tightly and the calcium carbonate is added to the hydrochloric acid in a conical flask. The rubber bung is then placed on quickly for the carbon dioxide not to escape.

A stopwatch is used to measure volume of carbon dioxide every 5 seconds until there is a complete reaction. This procedure is repeated 5 times for each of the molar solutions of hydrochloric acid; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 1.75 and .0. After the results are taken down the rates of reaction are worked out.

SAFETY

Safety glasses must be worn during the whole experiment as the hydrochloric acid is a volatile substance and spits when reacting with the calcium carbonate.

Adrian Ochoa

“Long Walk to Forever” by Kurt Vonnegut is a novel about a timid young man named Newt with only one goal to achieve. His goal is to convince and embezzle a beautiful young woman’s heart named Catharine. “Long Walk to Forever” is a beautifully written novel with many metaphors. Kurt does not inform the reader at the end if Newt induces Catharine to his wicked persuasions. This is an example of how Kurt plays with the novel and why this story is accordingly well written. The story also gives the reader the choice of ending the story the way the reader desires.

The first phrase I chose is the opening sentence. The opening sentence elucidates the novel’s plot. “They had grown up next to each other, on the fringe of a city, near fields and woods and orchards, within sight of a lovely bell tower that belonged to a school for the blind.” The sentence also emphasizes the setting but most importantly there is a deeper meaning. The lovely bell tower describes the love between Newt and Catharine. The school for the blind illustrates sightless love between the characters. They have been in love for years but they never recognized the affection they had for each other.

live paper help

“‘I am not sorry we kissed. That was sweet. We should have kissed, we’ve been so close. I’ll always remember you Newt, and good luck,’” is the second phrase I chose to analyze. This is not the way to say farewell to a friend that you do not love. If Catharine is in love with her fianc like she says she is then there is no way she can tell Newt she is not sorry for kissing him. This phrase notifies the reader that Catharine is deeply in love with Newt and that she is going to end up with him. Newt is one of the most important people in Catharine’s heart and soul. It helps notify the reader that she is in love with him when she informs Newt she will always remember him.

The last sentence I chose to analyze is the ending sentence. The ending sentence is an example of how Kurt plays with the novel and the reader. “She ran to him, put her arms around him, could not speak.” It does not point out if Catharine marries his fianc or Newt. It depends on how you perceive the sentence. Some readers perceive that the previous sentence is saying that Catharine loves Newt when she puts her arms around him. Other readers perceive Catharine’s hug as a friendly one. Her hug was a way of saying farewell to an old friend. It is not clear if Catharine could not speak because she was going to leave her one true love or because she was leaving her good friend.

In conclusion “Long Walk to Forever” is one of the best short stories I have ever read. It is not only a romantic novel but one fill with metaphors with profound meaning. I chose three phrases that demonstrate Kurt’s writing ability. The opening sentence describes the setting and the plot. The second phrase I chose gives the reader the feeling that Catharine will marry Newt. The ending sentence gives the reader the opportunity to end the story like he wishes.

Could care less

Everyday you wake up late

Sometimes I wish I was

that way

And you think Rockford Files is cool

But there are some things

that you would change

if it were up to you

So think about your masterpiece

Watch the Rockford Files

Call to see if Paul can score some weed.

Will you never rest

Fighting the battle of who could care less

Unearned unhappiness

Thats ok I guess...

Ive go this great idea

Why dont we pitch it to the Franklin Fucking Mint

Fine pewter portraits of

general apathy and major boredom singing...

Whatever and ever Amen

Oh well maybe not try again

This should cheer you up for sure

See Ive got your old I.D.

And youre all dressed up like the Cure

Will you never rest

fighting the battle

of who could care less

unearned unhappiness

Youre my hero I confess
